I’m an absolute horror newbie and I am SO thankful for this list! These gothic haunting stories are the kind of horror I can really get into. I’ve only seen Sleepy Hollow of the movies on this list but I loved it. I’m a really sensitive person so everything scares me lol but for some reason these atmospheric stories just pull me in and I love it!

I recommend Skeleton Key to almost everyone. It's one of my favorite movies ever because of that twist.

The Changeling is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love the story, the performances, the setting…it’s just amazing and perfect. The Haunting (1963) is fantastic, too. Definite classic.

Loved the Haunting, and The Innocents too! Top tier gothic classics imo, the atmosphere was top tier

I would LOVE to see a whole video on southern gothic / new orleans-style horror movie recs. I find your videos so engaging and I'm always looking to find more in that style!🥰

Great List. I loved The Others and The Fog. The ending to The Others is just so shocking and mind-bending, demanding a re-watch. Another film I would mention is the classic Don't Look Now which focuses more on the subject of grief and Psychological suspense then blood and violence.

Funny, I have always had a thing for cozy horror movies and never knew there was a term for it. Autopsy of Jane Doe was a perfect example of them and so was The Fog. You have a new fan. Subbed!

I LOVE CRIMSON PEAK, IT IS SO OVERLOOKED IMO SO HAPPY YOU MENTIONED IT JUST PEAK WINTER ANGST MOVIE and I still want to watch Invitiation for similar reasons. I recently saw The Murmuring (its a tv episode of the new Guillermo del Toro series), the atmosphere and characters were just beautifully haunting and depressing 💀 such a great list 🖤

Great recommendation video as usual. Not going to lie I was staring at Chucky the whole time waiting for him to turn his head. That docile smile, creepy.

I think this is the first time that I've seen everything on one of your lists and I completely agree with each pick. Cozy horror is the perfect winter vibe! I concur with ResurrectionDreams on The Uninvited and The Innocents. Both fav movies of mine and definitely cozy horror vibes. I would add Cat People (1942), Eye of the Devil (1967), Voices (1973), Haunted (1995), The Awakening (2011), The Lodgers (2017). There's so many more that I love but these all drip with atmosphere and give me those Ghost Story for Christmas chills that I look for in winter horror. Great list again, Mandy! Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!

This is such a great list! I've seen all of these except The Invitation. One I would add is Ghost Story from 1981 (I think), it's one of the first horror movies I remember watching and it really got me into the genre!

This video deserves a bonus only if you help me with something. In an email to my teacher, I called myself a dumb dumb who's too scared to do some disgusting homework and she literally brought up the topic 'horror movie.' Do you assume she knows the origins about a phrase? I wasn't even trying to test her. It's because I think it's funny to use it.

WOW, perfect list! I LOVE all these movies. The only one I haven't seen is The Invitation because I'm burnt out on that type but I just had to comment to say well done (although I'm not sure about the coziness of a morgue, ha!).

I was happy to see some of my favorites in your video: Haunting, Crimson Peak, The Others.. all movies I love to rewatch. I'd like to recommend "Only Lovers Left Alive" by Jim Jarmusch. It's a dark and brooding contemporary vampire love story, but the setting and tone are so layered. How the vampires react to drinking just a sip of blood is like an extreme opiate. Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt.

A few of my favorites were mentioned, particularly Sleepy Hollow, House of the Devil, and Crimson Peak (which I just rewatched last night). I'd also recommend The Uninvited (1944) and The Innocents (1961) for anyone who likes The Haunting, The Others, The Changeling, and/or Crimson Peak.

What about Burnt Offerings,The Ring,The old Val Lawton movies from the 40s,and The Shining.Also,I don’t know if you’re counting TV movies,but if you are there’s a great one called Dark Night of the Scarecrow that perfectly embodies the subtle horror that you are looking for.

I love cozy horror movies. But trash horror films are still my favorite ones.
@darkengine5931 Жыл бұрын
I think I'm more of a fan of suspense than horror, per se, although I often look to horror films for suspense. Some of my favorites in this vein include Alien, VVitch, Silence of the Lambs, the first half of The Autopsy of Jane Doe (the autopsy was so suspenseful!), Se7en (extremely suspenseful homicide investigation of the most gruesome murder scenes by an elusive serial killer), even somewhat Event Horizon (loved the suspenseful first half making us question where on earth this derelict ship has been after folding space-time). That said, it's mostly the long-sustained notes of suspense (and of a sort more interesting than a cheap jump scare from a cat when someone is searching a dark basement) that seem to appeal to me most since I love Tarantino's The Hateful Eight and a show like Severance in much the same regard (although I doubt they'd ever be considered horror). Are there any particularly suspenseful horror films that horror fans can recommend to me with particularly long and drawn-out, foreboding notes of suspense? In particular, I love when even the dialogue between characters is filled with suspense (like the dialogue between the father and son performing the autopsy in The Autopsy of Jane Doe, between detective Somerset and Millis in Se7en, between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice in Silence of the Lambs, between Dr. Neir and the crew searching for the Event Horizon in the beginning, etc). I love when something even as seemingly safe as a relatively-calm conversation (not hysterical, e.g.) between characters can build a deep sense of lingering suspense and foreboding. Another one that I liked fairly well this way was Pontypool which managed to avoid showing most of the horrific things that were happening outside the radio station but still build so much dread and suspense just from the conversations between the characters.
