At this point, any book that is hyped on Booktok gets an instant no from me. Your reaction is exactly how I'd expect mine to be if I read this book.

Yeah same. I did cave in and read piranesi which I liked but most of booktok is romance/fantasy/ya and that’s kinda the opposite of what I read anyway so why would I like it? It’s the same thing with bestseller lists. Just because a lot of people bought it doesn’t mean it’s actually good. It also doesn’t help if you meet the people who like these books because I have had an interesting experience with a Colleen Hoover fan that well let’s just say proved my point.

I think the purpose of fourth wing was to be a romantasy book that can help to introduce predominantly romance readers to the fantasy genre. Was definitely entertaining and fast paced, but by no means was it a literary marvel, nor a great fantasy for those of us that have read more of the genre. I definitely agree with your criticisms, would have loved some more world building, and the plot itself feels not fully thought out, however I think it did what it was trying to do and I did enjoy it. Would love a video with recommendations of books similar to fourth wing in either setting or plot etc, but ones you think do well what fourth wing didn’t. Also want to say I love this style of video, so cozy and feels like chatting with a friend ❤

NORMALLY if I don’t like a book, I think “oh it’s just not for me!” I don’t normally think “this is objectively a bad book” and I felt this way with Fourth Wing, so I don’t get its high rating!!! This book felt like fanfiction and not in a good “tropey” way but more like this is the first time the author has ever written any story ever, and it’s VERY obvious they don’t have any formal training. The writing style is exposition heavy, with clunky, immature dialogue, and there is zero world building. You just learn a bunch of facts about this “society” but you can’t envision walking around and existing in this world because the only details we learn are the ones conveniently set up to push the story forward. And within the “world building” that’s there, there is so much that contradicts itself or just doesn’t make sense, that it feels like the author didn’t spend a lot of time thinking it through. I like trash books, and I still couldn’t get through this.

Yes! I agree - it almost read like fanfiction to me. I think the world building could've been more flushed out. Additionally, the dragons almost seemed like a side note to me funny enough. I really enjoyed the threshing scenes and the dragon interactions but this book really mostly seemed to be about training. Listen this is my psa to all the readers out here hahaha - I feel like I need to shout this to the rooftops - if you did or didn't like this series. If you want something that's a very similar concept - READ The Aurelian Cycle Series. This book, if anything, reminded me how much I LOVED that series. The world so fleshed out, I loved the dragon bonds, and the character work is so good.

I'm so glad you read this book and vlogged it. It's so hyped and the cover is beautiful - and the sprayed edges on the first printing - but I was hesitant to pick it up after reading just the first page & a blurb about it. Now I know I don't need to worry about it. Honestly this is just me when something is referred to as a "fantasy romance" I'm hesitant. I don't mind romance inside my fantasy (or any) books but I don't gravitate to actual romance driven books. Now after your vlog I don't think I'll bother with it - maybe if I found it used for cheap. Though it sounds like a way more fleshed out book with more world building, etc, would have been more tempting. Thanks for another great vlog! 🐉📖📚

@@PeruseProject I’m heavily in an SJM and JLA state at present, but my favorite of all time is Radiance by Grace Draven. (I actually enjoy all of the Wraith Kings series.) There are some others that I really enjoyed, but in all honestly the writing is atrocious but the story and the characters are fun. 😂😂 I did really like the Ember in the Ashes series, and I’m hearing good things about everything Rebecca Ross writes. (Goodreads won’t load for me so I’m having to go off the top of my head.🙈) If you want historical, have you heard of/read the Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn or the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters? This one is extremely backlist but they’re fun Egyptology based mysteries with romance in them. Also, I know you enjoy middle grade as well, so I’d like to put The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Meddlestone on your radar. I’m enjoying it immensely.

@@PeruseProject Also, I apologize if that came off sounding offended. I wasn’t. I just felt bad that you’d wasted time on something you didn’t enjoy. There are a few people who it was sent to by publishers and I was thinking “have you done your research at all? This is definitely not a good match for this person.” The hype train was real and there are a lot who’ve read it and hated it, but they don’t say because fandoms are crazy and attack people. Lol. Not every book is for every reader and that’s what makes it interesting. Our reading tastes seem to be pretty different a lot of the time, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying your videos, reviews, and recommendations.😊 For me, it was exactly what I wanted it to be and what I needed. My father-in-law passed away after a long 2 years of illness and my reading this year has been almost non-existent. To date I’ve only read 40 books, which is very low for me. SJM, JLA and Fourth Wing have given me the escape I needed with characters I could root for, and care about without overtaxing my brain. I’m now reading The Way of Kings and loving it.

I actually enjoyed it, but I think it was mainly because I was part of the June frenzy when it came out, which made it quite fun to read. You're totally spot on with regards to all those flaws, but, what can I say? It did keep me from dealing with being an adult for several days and I'm always up for that 😅

I felt like this book was great for me as I am not a fantasy reader so it is a great way to get me interested and build up to reading fantasy books that do a lot of world building and are slow pace and descriptive.

Haha loves this review and I loved this book. It was so fun and entertaining and relatable in a way you wouldn’t expect it to be. I feel like it was also predictable but in the best most nostalgic way. For me, the lack of information was the point. It drew me in and helped me realize how brainwashed and manipulated everyone was. I’m excited to find out what happens next. Love your reviews and your vlogs as always! I always appreciate your opinion and your perspective. To each their own, ya know. 😂😊

Dragonrider school sounds like something I’d take a look at, given my fantasy gaming background, but the plot holes would drive me crazy. Thanks for reading this so that I don’t have to. 😀 The pasta salad over the arugula looked very tasty for that second (?) day’s lunch.

I feel like once something starts getting extremely popular and hyped up, I just don't even bother. Steer clear until a couple of months or years down the line until I'm actually interested or enough reviews have been left to get an actual feel for the book. When this book started getting traction I looked at the reviews under 3 stars and said "okay, that's all I needed to know" and haven't looked back. Now my book club wants to read it and I'm like nooooo there are better things to read

Thank you so much for the video, and for shortening my TBR by removing this book 😂 I was well on the fence before your vlog, but there’s plenty of things that I know I wouldn’t enjoy. I’ve just finished reading the Murderbot Diaries (so fun!) and just started Nothing to See Here, which I think is going to be the kind of weird that’s right up my alley 😊 Enjoy your a/c omg

I feel like there was a missed opportunity for a joke with saying "near the tail end" considering all the dragon names in the book I very much appreciate you taking us all on this reading journey with you, as its certainly helping me also come to terms with the fact that this will most likely end up as the Goodreads Fantasy of the Year

I listened to it when it came out because someone I thought I trusted with recs loved it. And.... I hated it, or well, I had a fun time some of the time. It was very juvenile and basic though, and raised many questions

Lol I loved your review 😂 I will say I am one of those that read it and gave it a 5 stars but I’m also not a huge fantasy reader. I’ve tried reading fantasy and end up DNFing them, but this book made fantasy palatable for me. So maybe that’s the issue….maybe it’s a really good book for those who don’t read fantasy that much and a weak book for those who read a lot of fantasy. And this is kind of weird, but I kept picturing the story as a subplot in Skyrim….by thinking in that world view made me understand the book’s universe and mythology better.

Just finished your vlog. I agree with most of what you said! Looking at some other books from the author looks like a lot of romance writing and not so much fantasy. The MC behaved very YA for most of the book but the spice was very adult. That part was a weird dichotomy for me

The authors writing style drove me bonkers, it felt like each chapter built up to this big climax, and then the chapter would just end there and the next chapter would pick up hours or days later, and then we're playing catch up with the fallout of the climax from the previous chapter. I kept feeling like I was missing pages as I read, like I had to flip back. I also just realized none of the plot is super original, as I was explaining the book to a friend I stopped and was like, "Does this just sound like sexy hunger games?"

Ngl this is exactly how I felt with Leigh Bardugo too, the pacing of the chapters mafe SoC insufferable to me. Can't imagine how painful it would be if the writing style itself was even clunkier like with this one...

I enjoyed it because it was one of those fantasy books where I could turn my brain off and just enjoy the ride. Was it super predictable, yes. But it was also just fun. I hadn't read a book that gave me that sense of fun in a long time.

I'm 70ish% into this book and I'm actually liking it. I've seen a lot of people say they don't like it, so I was a little worried about if I would like it. I do 🙄at the lust/hate moments though. lol I agree that the world building really focuses on the academy setting, which I'm mostly okay with. I figure we'll get more world building in the next book. 🤞 Right now, if I had to give it a rating, it would probably be 4.5 - which is extremely rare for me.
