Interesting report. I was in Portugal in October / November 2021 for 2 weeks based partly in Lisbon, partly Porto. The intention was to cover the entire Portugese railway network in 10 days, using a 3 day & 7 day Portugese rail pass. Other than the short branch to Figueira da Foz I managed it, including the remaining metre gauge. Took some planning as I wanted almost all travel to be in daylight and on some routes the service is pretty sparse. Travelled 1st class although other than a few less people there wasn't much difference to standard. Remember only IC and Alpha Pendular services have 1st class anyway. Dylan's experience pretty similar to mine. Bit of a pain that despite having a rail pass it was still necessary to have a ticket for each journey. Having got the rail passes at Lisbon, I presented the ticket office with a list of 52 tickets I wanted. Took an hour to sort those out.

Great video! Cp Intercidades trains are indeed very comfortable and the value for money is great especially when you bought the ticket in advance. The modernized (modernizada) sorefame coaches aren't so bad at all. The legroom might not be as good as the corails but seats at least for my experience are also very comfortable. Also important to mention that the power sockets aren't available in every seat and that a prototype to modernize those coaches and make them wheelchair accessible is being build at Entroncamento workshops.

Couple of clarifications are in order: 1. There is no lottery in the carriages. Sorefame renovated coaches are used mainly in the Lisbon to Evora/Faro/Guarda routes, rarely being used in other routes. The Corail Coaches being used to the Lisbon to Porto/Braga/Valenca routes. The Sorefame renovated coaches are allocated to the Lisbon Santa Apolonia depot and the Corail Coaches are allocated to the Porto/Contumil depot. 2. There are also power sockets in the Corail 1st class coaches. You can see them under the seat in light blue on the 12:29 time of this video. 3. Sorefame coaches were built in Portugal under license from Budd Company.

One more good one. That first train was a keeper. No Dylan, there's never enough rambling on. I'd like to hear a lot more. You could be the next Rick Steves. That underground platform & lift was quite clean & bright. It would be dark, dingy & full of graffiti where I live. It's good that your longer leg of the journey was in the more comfy train. Considering covid- how can the loo not have any soap? That is disappointing. At a quick glance the second train looks pretty similar. Then the disappointments start. Lucky that it was your shorter part of your trip. Thanks for the journey. Looking forward to next Friday. Enjoy!

I never noticed the difference in those seats, but maybe that’s because I’ve been traveling on second class. 🤷♂️ As for the interiors, they look rather similar in design, but admittedly the Sorefame coaches are indeed showing their age. I’d also suggest that you check the new remodeled Arco coaches - from a lot of more than 50 CP bought used from their Spanish counterpart, Renfe Operadora - once they are put into service in a few months (by the end of this year, or the first quarter of the next at the latest, I reckon) on Interregional services on the Minho line (they are bound to serve on ICs instead, once the Stadler FLIRT MMUs for that line are delivered). They look positively gaudy by comparison, but are hopefully comfortable and guaranteed to feel new.

I was wondering why you had to explain of the stairs & platforms ...I 🤔 ,I guess it's because people / kids nowadays don't use trains much & not familiar with how train stations are !? Iiked this train ,btw. Very clean & looking comfy !! I loved the leg room you got in the 1st class !! ( the 1st train's ,not the 2nd one ...that was so comedic that you tried very hard to pull down the tray & not much of a legroom !! ) Japan has always been very accessible to all the disabled people which I am very proud of !! The one thing I would say Dylan is that your comment regarding prices is one from a foreigner's perspective. Keep in mind that a minimum wage salary in Portugal is shy of 700 euros a month, 45 euros is not considered exactly affordable for the locals. Great reviews though and I must wholeheartedly agree with you, the Sorefame seats are not comfortable at all, experienced such myself a couple of years back. It is a huge shame that Portugal lags so behind other European countries when it comes to rail.

Thanks for the report Dylan, just one thing, I'm not exactly expecting you to know how to speak the languages of the various places you visit but I would strongly encourage you to put the place you're visiting into Google and listen to the pronunciation.
