Very nice report :) Even that I am from Poland, for many years I hadn't known that one of the most important rail lines of Czechia and Slovakia runs so close to Poland. I just have a note about the pricing, and calling it "very cheap" or "exeptional value" in travel reports of many train youtubers. That's totally right when comparing to western European countries. However, for many people in Poland, Slovakia, Czechia or Romania, these prices are average or often even expensive (like the fares for Polish "Pendolino" trains). In the same time, taking a train trip to Germany or France often seems like a vision of bankruptcy for travellers from Eastern European countries once they check the prices of DB, SNCF or ÖBB. Especially for the youths it's often unaffordable, even InterRail tickets seem enourmously expensive :(
@jmsmilfajt3 жыл бұрын
It depends really. Most people from Benelux countries and the UK usually still perceive the East/West division as it was before 1989 but it's not that black and white. Prague, Warsaw and Bratislava are very rich regions and many people here have highly qualified jobs with very solid salaries even for the EU as a whole but the countryside is lacking behind but generally Central/Eastern EU countries are much more developed than the countries that are further east but still geographically located within Europe. Regarding train tickets, I sometimes find Czech train tickets hilariously cheap even as a Czech. 😀 And students sometimes even laugh that they pay just 2-3 Euros for an Intercity trip through the country because there is a 75 % discount for them on top on already very cheap basic fare... So I think that the cheaper trains in the V4 countries have nothing to do with the east/west division but it's in the mentality that everyone is so savvy here that whenever people find mass transport to be more expensive than the individual transport (cars), they will avoid the mass transport.

As a Czech I was only twice on board of the Pendolino when I asked my parents if we can make a trip somewhere using it. I was a young boy back then but I never used it since. I think it's mainly because ČD do have fast trains, unfortunately the highest speed in the Czech Republic is 160kph only. I do quite regular trips from Prague to Olomouc (the most scenic, favorite and nostalgic part for me glimpses at 10:56) and I pay an annual fee to ČD and I can use all their trains for free except the Pendolino where I still need to pay extra, so for me (a student) there's no point to pay quite a high charge only to save literally less than 30 minutes even tho the distance from Prague to Olomouc is around 270km. As I said, Pendolino goes only 160kph here (and there are even parts where it can't go that fast) and other trais go 140kph minimal or 160kph too, only with more stops.
@a10.3 жыл бұрын
I'm no longer a student, but I use SC for my trips from Prague to Olomouc not for the negligible time savings, but for its quiet car (2nd class). I have yet to have another passenger take the seat next to me and my man, it's always such a calm and quiet ride. The booking fee is only about 35 CZK most of the time anyway.

Czech republic is a very dynamic country - the reality from 10 years ago seeing by eyes in 2021 is like looking back to the stone age... Since than the fleet of ČD has radically changed for better. Many new operaters enetered the rail market due to liberalisation. The refurbished interior really brings the journey in Pendolino to another level. I think Pendolino has the only first class in Czech Railways which is worth the money from the service standpoint. Small snack, coffee and champagne (alcoholic or non alcoholic) is included in the price of the ticket :)
@jurajkovac85072 жыл бұрын
I would argue that this is the only ČD product NOT worth paying for the upgrade. You get literally nothing more in terms of seat comfort and the pre-packaged sandwich is hardly worth the fare difference, especially when you can get better food right in the buffet car. You can also purchase the small bottle of sparkling wine (not champagne, btw) on board, so there's really no point in shelling out the money for 1st class.

PKP Intercity used to run a Night train from Warsaw to Amsterdam (actually more of a group of cars bouncing between a few different trains) that was made of a full on seeping car, a couchette and a "second classs seated car". The last one was actually a "sleeperette" not only configured in 2+1, but with seats that reclined to almost horizontal. Nearly every single person entering backed down a few steps to double check the big "2" on the internal doors. Sadly, since DB cancelled the night train these cars were attatched to between Berlin and Cologne, that service is no longer running, and the cars are juggled between various domestic and international services, and since the pandemic they're no longer used anywhere...
