Holy cow. I had to google the Beethoven story. Original inscription: "Sonata mulattica composta per il mulatto Brischdauer [Bridgetower], gran pazzo e compositore mulattico" (Mulatto Sonata composed for the mulatto Brischdauer, big wild mulatto composer)" It's funny because it's true.

The Kreutzer sonata, no less! If Beethoven and Bridgetower hadn't gotten in an argument afterwards, we'd all know his name, too. Well, us classical music nerds, anyhow.

WHAT? that's the actual name?
@ewestner

@@KevinP32270 what, Kreutzer? Yeah, Beethoven got mad at Bridgetower and changed the dedication, same as he did for the Eroica symphony when he got mad at Napoleon. Beethoven changed the dedication to Kreutzer but Kreutzer himself refused to play it because "it had already been played once" (by Beethoven and Bridgetower).

Surprised at the lack of mention of Paul Robeson, best known for his performance in the film Showboat. The guy was an All-American football player, a lawyer, and in his spare time an actor and one of the finest singers the country ever produced. And still treated terribly, because he was black and this was the 1930's. Also, for fans of more modern classical music, a former composition professor of mine, Jeffrey Mumford, has a style I really like. Check him out if you like weird modern stuff.

Thanks for this, Roy! But boy, this list was way too short. We shouldn't forget Saint-George, who was called the "Black Mozart" in his day (and was a world-class fencer and lady's man), and George Walker, the first winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Music, who would have been 100 this year... celebrations happening in dozens of orchestras right now.

Chevalier St Georges rolled with the legendary black French General Thomas Alexandre Dumas (father of Alexandre Dumas author of The Three Musketeers and The Count Of Monte Cristo). They both served in the first all black European regiment The Legion de St Georges aka Legion de Americas (Americas Legion) made entirely of black/mixed soldiers from French colonies in the Americas. Georges was the leader, but Dumas often headed it when Georges was away doing his music or fencing.

Big shoutout to Henry Thacker Burleigh (1866-1949), the first black composer who opened African-American music to the classical scene and served as a mediator to open-minded white composers like Antonin Dvorak (prompting the latter to state that American classical music would inevitably have roots in Black music - admittedly because Dvorak had misunderstood something about the relation of what he thought was Native American music and African American music, but nobody tell me it ain't true regardless...).

You barely scratched the surface. I work for a classical radio station and wrote an essay two years ago called “Classical Music is Not White Music.” There have been many artists of color who have contributed to the art form from the very beginning. And by the way that portrait of Beethoven looked nothing like how Beethoven actually looked. No two portraits of him look alike because portraiture artists were encouraged to make their subjects look as white as possible. I know it’s opening a can of worms to assert that Beethoven was Black but I should just point out that 1. people have been speculating about that since Beethoven’s lifetime and several scholars insist it’s true and 2. while the portraits all disagree with one another the verbal descriptions of his appearance were remarkably consistent, and they all agree that he looked nothing like a typical German or Austrian, he had dark skin and fine curly hair that sounds like he had an Afro. His constant reference to Bridgetower being “mulatto” was a joke that Bridgetower was in on because that’s how he referred to himself in his publicity materials. Their friendship ended when they got into a fight over a woman (musicians and men never change), which is why he changed the name of his sonata from Bridgetower to Kreutzer in the hope that the latter, one of the most famous violinists of that time, would play it, but he never did. Whether or not Beethoven was actually what we would consider to be Black, the fact is that he had to overcome a lot of prejudice regarding his appearance in Viennese society (including one incident where he was arrested and a member of the aristocracy had to go to the station to bail him out), his music is all about overcoming struggles (like his deafness and the abuse he suffered in childhood from his alcoholic father), and recognizing universal brotherhood (and not only in his Ninth Symphony). He deserves our respect and attention and so do the many fine classical musicians of color throughout the centuries. It’s music for everyone.

The thing with typical german and austrian looking is that there is no such thing. Heck, the Bavarians have turkish ethnical roots (sorta, kinda, maybe). You can't live in the middle of Europe with everyone traipsing through it and end up looking like Himmler wished we did. So it is very much possible that Beethoven did look the way he reportedly did because he had african ancestry - especially because his family was from Belgium which was at one point under spanish rule.

Here's what I know about Ludvig van: He never married, drank like a fish towards the end of his life especially, and had a bunch of groupies. Total rock star, no matter what color he was.
@jdj830
@jdj830 2 жыл бұрын
@@thexalon The first two are correct, but while he did enjoy a few years of the rock star life in his late 20s, that faded quickly as he started going deaf in his 30s and he became reclusive. By his 40s most of his "groupies", sadly, were sycophantic, parasitic men who did such charming things as offer to "lend" Beethoven their wives to sleep with and recommend the best Viennese prostitutes. We know this because during his last decade he communicated through conversation books, where Beethoven would ask a question or make a comment and his guests would write down their responses. These books have survived, and a result we know the gruesome, icky details of how he talked with his buddies. His music may have transcended the earthly plane into the realms of the immortal, but his interactions with other humans on this plane definitely did not.

Glad this is getting some attention. I would like it better if it wasn't centered around Whiteness. It matters more what the people thought of them rather than presidents, kings, or places of virtue. While it's important to play Carnegie Hall, it's more important to point to one's talents among peers or their journey to be outstanding. While Classical Music has a lot of roots in White culture, the instruments and what we call music and the definitions of art, are contemporary in the times in which they happened. The reason we need to know who they are is not for the sake of White people who knew of them, rather we should know them because of what their outstanding talents contributed to the art at the time.

Would maybe be interesting to do a CP Time not about a field where black people are often overlooked like classical music, but about a field where it's well known that black people had a big influence, like blues and jazz leading to rock and funk and how black musicians have formed the popular music as we know it today. Might not fit perfectly into the segment (or into 5 mins), but would be super interesting to hear more about :)

A correction; George Bridgetower was not born in Britain, but in Biała Podlaska, Poland. George's father was most likely a West Indian (Caribbean) man, who somehow found himself working at the court of wealthy Polish-Lithuanian aristocrat Prince Hieronim Wincenty Radziwiłł. The family moved to Britain when George was still very young.

It can be so isolating being a black person studying classical music. I'm not goin to get into all of that here.
