So, in looking at my own data, even when my overall AHI is low, I see that most of my events are hypopneas, sometimes long sequences of them. I had figured that turning up the pressure would help with OAs but I didn't see how it would decrease the Hs. But it seems clear that you are saying just that. I guess I will turn up my pressure a bit more. BTW, I happened across one of your older videos where you suggested turning off EPR, so I tried that . . . . my AHI decreased DRAMATICALLY. A great tip! Thanks!

There's nothing wrong with EPR, but ResMed has made it so that it decreases EPAP. Just increase pressure by the same amount every time you increase EPR, and you will not have that disadvantage. It's simple arithmetic.

@@cebruthius True for ResMed's AirSense 10 or 11 Autoset, but other less-knowledgeable subscribers than you should be aware that ResMed's AirCurve 10 VAuto uses "pressure support" (PS), which ADDS pressure to EPAP to determine IPAP.

My apnea rate went down and my sleep got better when I put the pressure way below my "prescription". Yeah I think I snore again, even with the mask but I don't think it bothers me much. My wakefulness during the day speaks for itself! It also keeps the leaks down. Less pressure equals less leaks!

Hey Jason, thanks for all your informative videos. I'm a guy in my mid-30s; not overweight. I occasionally see my breathing stop for 45 seconds and sometimes up to a minute in OSCAR. In fact when I got my first CPAP in 2017, there were a few nights in the first two weeks where I had no-breathing events that lasted 70 seconds (!). Sometimes they are flagged as obstructive, and sometimes clear airway (I had a DreamStation 1 since 2017, and a DreamStation 2 in the last few weeks). It doesn't happen a LOT, but it shows up enough that I know it's not a data anomaly (no change in leak rate, I wasn't awake, no disconnects, etc.) My question is -- how common is this, and is this something I should be pursuing beyond just CPAP therapy? I am an engineer by day and have a solid understanding of how CPAP is meant to work. I've monitored my SleepyHead/OSCAR logs for a long time to see trends of my AHI vs. the administered pressure, and have tried varying it higher and lower and leaving it there for days to establish trends. I have no doubt that the CPAP is helping, but these occasional long periods of not breathing at all seem to happen regardless of the pressure setting. Thanks again for what you do.

i tried it on without going to sleep and breathed normally for 2 hours some how the machine said i stopped breathing while awake 10 times per hour , i have a normal tube and i didnt stop breathing i think the algorythim is a little short on the interval and too long in the inhale.

Off topic: Amazon announced a new product today called Halo Rise, I think, it is supposed to remotely monitor REM sleep and report. $140. I don't think it will be available for several months but you might consider reviewing this device as it is probably a fancy gimmick. It is not even on the Amazon website yet, as it was announced today 9-28-22. Lookin' smart with the baseball cap.

This device was designed with RPSGTs on the design team. It uses radar to measure respiration accurately. It's legit. Honestly, this tech should be used in sleep medicine to assist in sleep studies. Who wants to wear belts to measure respiratory movements when you could go with a contactless solution instead?

Did you try the trick of taping the bottom of your mask to your face? 😂 I'm still curious about whether that'll work! My face masks are both from 2019, one of them is now yellowed with age, so I don't think it would be an accurate experiment if I triedyself! :P

My Resmed Airsense 10 is a “Brick” meaning it does not record detailed data. So, all I have to go off of is My Air. Is there any way around this to use Oscar? I feel like I’m flying blind. I mainly use nasal pillow/cushion and have an AHI below 1.0 at pressure below 7.0 but I don’t trust it.

If it really is a brick (not an Elite or AutoSet model) there are two options: reflash the firmware with a JTAG/SWD cable or get an Elite or AutoSet model from Craigslist.

I'm a bit confused. Did you stop using a nasal mask, or nasal pillows and tape? Any issues with going with those types of masks at a setting of 12? I know that you've been championing Knightsbridge chin strap. Are you still using that?

I stopped using a nasal mask with tape and Bleep because I'm testing out the Fisher and Paykel Evora full face mask. I wouldn't use a Knightsbridge chinstrap with a nasal or nasal pillow mask....not to start with anyway unless there is so much jaw drop that it pulls off the tape.

It is great to see an "expert" struggling to find the optimum setting for his machine. I have only had mine a month and am very impatient with trying to get a good night's sleep. It does call into question why I should pay you $200 to analyze my results when you are not able to perfect yours.
