Just got my first CPAP machine (Resmed AirSense 10) and, word of mouth, led me to your site - Sleephq is a brilliant resource and I've uploaded/viewed my data. Nick, you and Adsy, should be applauded for the way in which you have designed and present your information, from the most basic to more advanced levels - all in the name of helping us have more control of our health (sleep and more). Well done and thanks.

Holy hell. Thanks you so much for this! I struggled for over a year with ongoing mask leaks. Spent a fortune trying different masks, and then rage quit therapy. I only just returned last week due to ongoing daytime fatigue and lack of energy. Still struggled with leakage. Then I found this video while researching alternative masks (I'm using an AirTouch F30). Turns out, my pressure of 14 was way too high for my needs. Last night, I dropped it to 11 and leakage dropped dramatically, while my AHI was a solid 0.7. I plan to calibrate for the best balance over the next few nights, but first I came where to thank you for your pressure titration tip. I never thought of changing the setting from the initial APAP calibration point.

I’ve been for a week into the cpap therapy, and it has been very frustrating. My mask is an f20, but I’m a side sleeper, so any time that I go to deeper stages of my sleep, the mask looses it seal and you find yourself with a bunch of air going to your eyes and with a bad noise. After that it’s really difficult to sleep again, so you feel frustrated and tired. I feel very tired and thinking about changing my mask for an f30i, which is designed for side sleepers. Thanks for the videos and for sharing the information, it helps with the process of getting used to the therapy.

No matter how good you doctor is, the main challenge is what you do yourself. The doctors job is to find the excact diagnose, its not his job to accept a disease and comply to that. Apnea patients are very different. Thats our own job to manage the treatment in our daily life. Make your own experiments, and sooner or later they will lead to succes. Good we have the net, where you can find both good and worthless information. Its up to you to find out what is right in your situation.

300lbs+, beard & moustache, Philips Dream Station, set to 13.5. I use the Amara View "full face" (in medium cushion) which just fits from the BOTTOM of your nose to your chin, very small, very comfy if normal masks bug you. Doesn't go over the nose, goes under it, it's hard to believe it'll seal but it does. I switched to my old CPAP machine because of the Phillips recall and I use it at 14.6! Leaks aren't an issue. Change the damn cushion ($40USD) every couple of months and it's awesome. After about 3 months you can INSTANTLY feel the difference with a new cushion. When I make 'em last 6 months plus it's night and day better when I replace it. Wash the cushion is dish washing soap (Dawn brand in the US) and it screws it up, it turns white and isn't as supple. Not a problem with the Res Med full face my cousin uses. The Amara View mask has a quick release hose feature for trips to the bathroom or kicking the cat out.

#1: get pressure levels right. Learn how to change pressure levels #2: figure out how to check your sleep data. Ideally under 5. Drop it to 8. Get 95th percentile. Set pressure limits for auto max and auto min. Goal is to reduce max limits. #3: get mask wipes to remove oil from mask or wipe mask with soapy water daily. Mask cushion needs replaced regularly #4: replace mask with rez med mirage Quattro. F10 Quattro. Roll fit Terra. IsSan or isSan two. P10 mask with N 30 strap. P30 with nasal cushion.

I have had inflammation fluid around the heart as one of the after effects of Covid, now I really rely on the CPAP to keep my oxygen levels happy and my heart not laboring so much. I’m almost in the same boat as you except I don’t think I have fluid around my heart. And they did a CT scan with contrast. However I got the pneumonia and I’m still on oxygen after seven weeks which means that I probably have scarring in my lungs. How do you feel now? Just curious because this is 2021 and what happened to you happened in 2019. I would like to know if you fully recovered?

I use an over the counter sleep aid and wear ear plugs. It really helps get you to sleep. I wash my face and my mask before sleep, and that helps with the seal. For air leaks drying my eyes, I drape a cloth over my eyes when I lay down to sleep. It doesn't completely eliminate it but it drops the irritation down enough to sleep.I live in AZ so the lack of humidity here makes the dry eyes and mouth way worse. It's worth getting used to your machine just for your quality of life. Good luck 😀

@@Yoshi-1972 for what it’s worth, I think finding the right mask for you is key. I’ve been quite lucky. Diagnosed 1 month ago… but am scoring 100% on the ‘MyAir” application most nights. For my face, the AirTouch masks with memory foam seals seems to work best for me. I have to use the full face masks since I’m a mouth breather. Tape on my mouth did not work! I’ve had the most success with the AirTouch F20. I’m trying the F30 but without the memory foam my good ‘mask seal test’ leaks terribly when I roll over onto my side. So far, I feel so much more alert during the day and my AHI are typically below 5. Hang in there folks

Just did modifications yesterday. Didn't do full dismissal, used a 7/8 diamond impregnated drill hole bit. Then sealed hole using 7/8 snap in hole plugs and then placed duct tape over them. Had to cut plugs seal edges to get fitted properly. The foam came out somewhat easy. Only difficulty was the factory dab of glue on a internal hold down points on each side. Used flashlight to shine into void to see if completely empty. Had to use hemostats to both remove foam and to clean off those glue points. Then reassembled and let run afew minutes. But went one step more, I placed the unit on C-check to readjust the air pressure flow. But the unit seam to be just a bit louder but no different the my old gray Resmed model. Ps tried using mask without that piece of baffling in the clip on area. So to replace used a filter replacement cut into small strips and then pressed them into the slot using a sewing needle.

Side sleeper here and after trying all three, nasal, nasal pillow and full facemask I settled on the ResMed N20 Nasal (the one that just goes over your nose). For side sleeping I found it to hold the best seal, of course no mask is going to be 100% perfect and there are certain variables that may influence your sleeping experience. But I found the ResMed N20 Nasal held its place the best for me sleeping on my side all night.

I recently restarted using my mask. I'd stopped for a while as my pressure was far too high I'd had it changed to 14 from 12 and it was to much.. However, when it came time for the 6 monthly NHS service / adjustment of the machine it was lockdown and I was expected to sit in a hospital waiting room full of people who had breathing problems at a time when a virus was abundant which caused people to go to hospital with breathing problems.. So call me paranoid but my machine also hadn't been used etc. I have found Epimax hand / skin cream works extremely well using 2x pea sized amounts on the rubber seal it's hypoallergenic, water based, used to cleanse skin without needing to be dried off and seems to last for 3 / 4 nights when applied to the mask seal. I'm still trying to rebook my hospital appointment with the machine but I still have a few months before it's 6 months of use has elapsed for its service I've also managed to lose 5-6 stones and obviously my eyelids often flap due to the eye sockets CPAP pressure. Very uncomfortable when eyelids pass gas.. I've now set CPAP to 10 and thanks to your video I know how to properly monitor my results. This comment started out as the Epimax tip I'd figured out. Now you know 50% of my medical history. LOL.. Cheers & All the best hope this may help someone out as the therapy is incredible when it's comfortable and setup correctly.

I have been using CPAP machines since 1996, and they have revolutionised my life... until a few months ago when suddenly I began leaking and at the same time opening my mouth and making incredible snorting sounds, according to my lovely wife. A week or go I was switched to a Resmed CPAP with a full-face mask (F30) but the leakage seems to occur sometime after I fall asleep. I've taken to ranting on You Tube comments. Different sleep apps tell me I haven't had more than 20 minutes of deep sleep in several months. Suddenly, old patterns have returned, like falling asleep at inopportune zzzzzzzzz snck... sorry... times and having a permanently foggy head.

Been on CPAP for months and hating it. Hospital wanted to control pressure levels and had to fight to get the right to do it myself. I'm on level 16 but reducing by 0.4 and now around 14. Still feel the mask lifts away in the corners and I tend to drool, it's a mask that sits under the nose and full mouth. I have had anxiety and claustrophobia and seem to huge gulp down the air every hour then panic and rip the mask off. Have got the humidifier fairly sorted but still want to try a nasal only mask. Will try your level vs data approach.

When I used a nasal mask, it leaked every night. I used cpap gel and that helped a bit, but my cpap supplier suggested switching to nasal pillows. THAT ended the leak issues. It took a bit (about 2 weeks) for my nostrils to adjust to the pillows, but it works great.

My daughter uses a sleep weaver anew mask. Her skin needed a break from the other masks. She always had a triangle rash on her face. She is a dedicated mouth breather. She uses a BiPap machine. This combination solved quite a few issues. The one issue left has been difficult to solve. Her mask leaks. She very willingly puts on her mask each night and uses it all night. Her disability makes it difficult to accept change. Also, she likes to be independent. She used to pull her straps so tightly, she didn't want us to loosen it. Now, with the cloth mask, Her face is cleared up, but we are having difficulty adjusting this mask to fit without leaks. She's very independent and doesn't want help from us. Also, she has a very small head. Those straps just don't fit right. I had to sew them smaller. I have been told we have the smallest straps available. With so many people with Down syndrome requiring cpap and BiPap machines, you would think there would be a subset of masks designed for their face profile, head size and shape. Don't they make children's sizes? I'm sorry to ramble. Partly, there are details that make a difference. I guess I also need to vent a little. I thought your video would cover what I need for my daughter. Do you have a video on the sleep weaver? Or how to fit masks on children? Thank you for your help!

YASOU Uncle Nicko. Per your note above, I assume I can get my data for APAP from my ResMed 10 on this data you mentioned? 1. The 90th or 95th percentile 2. The average pressure level 3. Your AHI My leaks have been up. I'm at 10-15 auto pressure but AHI are all under 5 events. Seal leaks have been over 20-30-40 L/min. This is all from myAir app only. I'm going use SD card now and SleepHQ. Thank you sir!

Great video, the key is to know your machine and learn how to change areas for your confort, not the doctors; monitor & document your daily data which I get from MyAir; I also track type of mask use; I transfer all data to a MS Word Table with these Date/Hours&mins used/Mask Seal Score/Events Per HR(AHI)/type of equipment used (small headgear with Med Cushion etc/Score. Daily entry looks like this : 11/7/2020 7:16 hrs 70 pts Good 20/20 pts 0.1= 5 pts HCS 1=5ptsNMaskSM Score 100 (used Nasal Mask with Small Headgear & med cushion) ;I then adjust my equipment based on daily data received. My average AHI since I started 228 days ago is 1.32 AHI, Used 100% average time 7hrs 30 mins; Average use > 6hrs 100%; I control my machine, the machine does not control me. I have some issues with mask leak and this video is great as I feel I can now tweak my pressure correctly to maximize mask leak minor issue. Sorry for length of this but data tracking vs testing various masks is the only way to take charge of your comfort in using the darn CPAP machine/mask

Long term nasal pillow user. Unless the straps are very snug, you will wake up with the red angry face on your machine. Somehow or someway a leak will occur and your whole day ruined due to lack of energy and brain fog. Rule of thumb: Your nose should be in minor pain when you wake up. If the nasal pillow was on snug, multiple hours with it on will for sure cause some discomfort when you wake up and notice it. I guarantee you if you want 100% convenience, you will wake up with the red angry face minimum 3 times a week. No pain no gain my friends. The advice from people who don't have to actually use it for eternity is useless. You need the advice of people who are actually in the war zone battling everyday.

Hi Donna, i did have a chuckle when i read 'full mask crap'. Pretty accurate way to describe it really lol. Most people wouldn't need to change the cushion that frequently. Every 3-6 months should be adequate. What's the model of the mask you are using? Cheers

@@CPAPReviews Actually, the recommendation by Medicare, Medicaid, & Blue Cross Blue Shield (all in the U. S.) as well as ResMed, is to change the cushion every month. I agree with you, though-they probably don’t need to be changed that frequently AS LONG AS they’re inspected every week & have no cracks, discoloration, etc., etc.

What about the airfit f20 I got diagnosed about 15yrs to late and my heart is paying the price. I stopped breathing 97 times a minute my poor heart was working on over drive but about 8yrs ago I got my c-pap machine and I'm now at 1.4 times a minute. Unfortunately heart damage was already done and I got a pacemaker. My pulmonary Dr says I'm his poster girl for use.. I use it 7nights+ and when I got my dreamstation I put my old machine next to my recliner for long movies that I sometimes fall asleep watching. I love your educational videos and your accent tops it off. Thank you ... Good day to you Sir

Thanks for the info. I've been a CPAP auto user for many years and I'm learning more here that is helpful. I wonder if you've found out how not to have to use Rem-ZZZ's with the Wisp Mask. Rem-ZZZ's is a little cloth triangle that covers the nose silicone to keep sensitive skin from becoming sore/inflammed. This does at times affect the seal, plus, even the x-small Remzzz's is too large. Will check back for comments.

Wisp is Respironics, best I've found; especially if your claustrophobic. The mask is soft in the fabric, but I do use the RemZZZ's to protect skin as mentioned above.

Gee thanks for this video it's a great help and that's only haveing seen just this segment. See in 2012 I was told I had sleep apnea to the tune of 13 times an hour however I wasnt told that I was told it was 13 times a night in my mind I said well that dont seem to be alot but I went to the address they sent me to to recieve my training to use my machine. Yeah right I got there they set me in a room and brought in a mask that reminded me of a giger face hugger from alien, anyhow they showed me how to fit it to my face and strap it down tight told me all I had to do was take it home and plug it in and the machine would do the rest ,sounds simple enough so I go ahead and did as I was told the first 3 nights were awesome but from the forth night on I would mask up tighten the straps and lay down and close my eyes and turn on the machine it started lite and slow with minimum pressure and just as I was dozing off the matching over pressured and was breaking the seal on my face makeing all sorts of noise wakeing both me and my wife. I called the next morning and the said bring in your mask the looked at it but I didnt see them do anything with it the said there you go it should be fine. So again that evening I put on the mask and turned on the machine and it again started low and slow then shot up and broke the seal again this time makeing alot more noise. I shut it off waited and restarted it and it did great till it began pressurizing again. I had that unit 4 months took it in the last time and told them something's wrong with the machine it keeps breaking the seal and wakeing everyone in the house. They assured me the machine was fine and I was an idiot because I didnt know how to run my machine I smiled though I wanted to break that guys neck and turned to the door and said call me when you have fixed the machine so it works as I was told it should. Well this year my doctor asked me how i was doing with my cpap i laughed and said if i never see another one as long as i live I'll be fine. My first wife passed and I remarried and hit a rough patch but things are working out. Anyway my doctor wanted to know what happened and I told him they set me up for another sleep study and a new machine a Philip's dream machine the man gave me the entire lesson on what to do and gave me a new mask with the hose over my head and the mask itself goes under my nose and works awesome I have never slept so well. He told me when you get home fill the water tank and assemble the hoses and mask turn it on and set it at 4 for the air flow and set the temp at 3 also said i could change the temp as the weather changes and i do. I have all the goodies that came with the unit but cant seem to locate cleaning instructions for the tank filters hoses and mask. On here I cought warm soapy water and all what about the little strap at the back of the mask it's like neoprene and cloth kinda and not sure how to work on that and do I need to rinse everything with warm water too.

Every night for me results in my nose getting cold ( despite heater on) and dryness inside the nose almost to and including, inner nostril pain, acute enough to wake me up. So, just before I lay down with the CPAP on, I like to put some petroleum jelly on my finger and ever so lightly apply it to the inside of my nose. (If I have cold, I like to switch to Vicks Vapor rub instead.) The nose piece and the petro jelly makes for a nice seal, you simply wash the equipment off the next day.

It's the most comfortable for me, I just have to use the chin strap with it because I tend to still open my mouth at night....and the dry mouth you will get is insane haha. Hey Nick, you have some great insights but you could trim the videos a lot to make them shorter. For example you could delete the first minute or so because the people watching this video don’t need a rationale for why to watch the video, they made that decision when they saw the title of the video and clicked on it.

I'm surprised you did not cover these additional contributors to leaky mask. 1. The mask size itself may not be the best size for you. For full face masks, if it is not wide enough at the mouth to completely cover your mouth, you can get leaks at corner of mouth. If the mask is too tall or too short, same thing. 2. Headgear. Is it the right size for your head? The standard size may be too large for you. The strap going over top of head plays a role in mask being held in place and needs to be able to be snugged down. Headgear has a stretchiness component that wears out, so replace the Headgear often, like every 3 months. 3. Fluid loss from our face. During the night, our cells dehydrate, and so the mask will loosen on the face and will need slight tightening.
