If you want to successfully pass the firefighter CPAT test and have a shot at becoming a firefighter TODAY, there are some highly important instructions you want to pay close attention to.
CPAT stands for: Candidate Physical Ability Test. It is one of the firefighter physical requirements to get hired.
The CPAT is a pass/fail test that requires the candidate to complete it in 10:20 or less. If a candidate exceeds the 10:20 minute deadline, he/she will fail the entire test. Also, if the candidate fails to complete any event throughout the test he/she will fail the entire test.
If you follow this CPAT guide and train hard, you will soon find yourself successfully in passing the firefighter CPAT test.
Heres what you will learn in this CPAT guide.
First, you will learn about the 8 different CPAT skill events and what the event is designed to assess the firefighter candidate for. The 8 separate events consist of:
1️⃣ STAIR CLIMB
2️⃣ HOSE DRAG
3️⃣ EQUIPMENT CARRY
4️⃣ LADDER RAISE AND EXTENSION
5️⃣ BREACH
6️⃣ SEARCH
7️⃣ RESCUE
8️⃣CEILING BREACH AND PULL
Second, you will learn about the critical failures that can occur throughout the entire CPAT test.
And lastly, you will learn how to successfully pass each separate CPAT skill event.
TIPS on how to successfully pass the CPAT:
1️⃣Start a training program and follow through with it
2️⃣Get on a stair climber or walk and run flights of stairs
3️⃣Wear a weight vest or add some sort of weight to your body while training (simulating full
firefighter PPE and SCBA)
4️⃣Try to do some of the CPAT events prior to your CPAT date (i.e. sledge hammer hits on a tire,
simulating the CPAT force entry prop)
5️⃣Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
6️⃣ Eat well (make it a lifestyle, not a limited phase)
7️⃣Sleep well (try your best to get a minimum of 8 hours a night)
8️⃣Watch this CPAT training video provided multiple times to become familiar with the test.

I passed today! Let me tell you first hand, it is all mind over matter. I’m a 32yr old corn fed volunteer that hasn’t ever worked out and most will probably tell you I’m overweight. With a minute and a half in the stairs I almost stopped. Remind yourself to not give up. Don’t give up. Once the stairs are done you’ve got the rest. YOU CAN DO THIS!

Awesome man I'm happy for you! I'm the same way ( I'm also a cornfed 6"5 260 lb) but I'm going to try to get into decent shape and lose some weight before I begin the process

@@isolated1 I landed a full time gig. And I love it. It’s small we only have 4 on shift. And we cover maybe 3000 people. It’s not where I want to be but it’s a great stepping stone to where I want to go!

Did they check your respiration/heart rate after you completed it? I'm not worried about completing it, I'm worried they'll be able to tell I'm out of breath.

I took the CPAT 3 weeks ago and failed, last 20 seconds of the stepmill got me. I got lightheaded and my pulse had to be in the 190s. So, I bought a 50lbs weight vest and hit the gym hard 5 days a week. Made sure gym had a stepmill. Focused 100% on legs and cardio. I changed my eating habits (more fish, rice and veggies) ceased all drinking of alcohol (social drinker). Welp, today just 3 weeks after failing, I passed the CPAT, it was actually pretty easy with a little training! A job was contingent on my passing. I start my first full time 24/48 as a firefigjter/paramedic on monday.

Alex, way to push through the struggle 💪 Congratulations on the CPAT and landing a spot. Thank you for adding real value to our community. It is nice to hear encouraging testimonies. I know there are many others out there that are struggling through similar circumstances. I use my 50lb vest till this day to do many of my lower body and cardio training sessions. Which vest do you use?

@@FirefighterAmbitions I use a RunMax brand I picked up on Amazon. 50lbs in 5 pound increments. I got into a great routine and cardio training is something I will continue to adapt into everyday life! Failing the first time was a blessing in disguise, it was a wake up call.

@@John-cq3hk Thats HUGE. Good for you. It sounds like you are already doing some good things. Keep that up. Try to increase the work time (duration; longer than 10 minutes) and work load (weight, reps, etc) the stronger you get at performing your normal 10 minute cycle. It's about progressive overload. Push yourself further every time you train (responsibly of course). Also, Try to add some weight training in their as well. Being 2 weeks out be sure to allow yourself time to properly recover as well prior to the test. Also, ensure that your hydration and nutrition are 100% dialed in from this point on. 9.99/10 times be sure to make the right decisions when it comes to your food and drinks. Great video. Showed this to a buddy of mine who is interested in being a firefighter. We used a different video when I went to my CPAT Orientation My advice for anyone who is out there about to take this; Core strength is key. I failed my first attempt because I could not simply stay balanced on the stair climber. Weighted lunges and step ups are your friend! Cardio is important but strength is doubly important. I tell ya when I got out of the search and rescue tunnel having to push yourself back up off your belly is exhausting. Keep your cool in that tunnel because it’s easy to panic and increase your heart rate. Honestly I let my head do the searching and adjusted my body whenever it hit something lol. The breach and pull was the most deceivingly hard event. You’re tired at this point. Just stay centered. Use your bodys weight to your advantage. Breach with your legs and pull with your hips. It’s not an easy test, don’t let elitists fool you. Go to as many workshops as you can. If you really want this then get it. The fire department changed my life. It really is one of the greatest jobs in the world

I took this test this past weekend. Its all about endurance. The will power to succeed and the mental power to keep going. Not going to lie. The test is pure hell. The stair climb is the toughest being the 1st. People will quit at 60% capacity. Just stay focused and keep pushing on.

@@FirefighterAmbitions the next step is to apply fulltime somewhere. This is not only a goal/dream for me, but also for my kids. To show them there's anything they can do if they put their mind to it. My family dont come this type of job service. They hate cops, and anything to do with this type of service.

I passed my department’s CPAT today with 1:40 left on the clock. Coming from somebody without a physically fit background if you want it you can achieve it with hard work & dedication GO TO AS MANY OPEN PRACTICES AS YOU CAN ‼️ it’s going to help you in the long run.

Failed my first PAT because I thought running would be sufficient for working out my legs, and essentially underestimated the test. Ive been training much more this past week, and have 1 more week until my next PAT. I failed by 25 seconds overtime, this time I will push harder. When I pass I will do a panel interview. Praise God

Just what I was looking for! Had my first meeting with the Chief of a local department. He’s my in-law’s neighbor so I was able to set up a meeting with him. Dressed well. Had great questions. I left there feeling great after he said “I would love to have you on our team, or you’re the ideal candidate we’re looking to hire in our into our department” he also offered that I should apply to as many as possible, but also wanted me to consider his department a lot. These vids have helped so much!!

As a career firefighter I’ve taken the cpat a few times. Just come to say cardio and pace during the events is bread and butter. If you cannot run 2 and a half miles non stop at a decent pace you WILL struggle if not that you’ll fail. The single most important thing is pace i walked the entire course every time I’ve done it and my time has stayed around 6:45- 7:30 depending. I don’t advise trying to zoom through it for multiple reasons. Slipping up and getting DQd is my primary reason and getting gassed is the 2nd reason. Good luck to you hopefuls it’s a fantastic Career choice.

@@FirefighterAmbitions of course ! I’m in the process of switching agency’s snd just so happen to take it. After doing it i came to see what people’s reaction to the test are. I personally hate it, but my opinion doesn’t change the fact that most agency’s require it and seeing people fail it from simple things just kinda got to me because all in all it’s not an overly complicated physical if you just pace and come decently fit.

I took a free practice CPAT today and I failed by 20 seconds. The videos make it look easy, so I underestimated it a bit. The hardest parts for me were the tunnel (You can't see a thing in there, so I lost time) and the dummy drag. I also made an error on the ladder raise part because I let the rope slip a little bit. The proctor told me to grip closer to my fingers instead. If anyone is going to take the test, make sure you have at minimum one practice session under your belt because I'm sure one of the events will surprise you.

I'm gonna strengthen my arms, up my cardio, and do a ton of farmer carries. I'm also going to fix my grip on the ladder raise portion (the second one with the rope). All those things considered, I should pass it the next time. I have 2 practice runs before my actual test next month.

@@FirefighterAmbitions I happened to read this Marcus Aurelius quote before testing today: "Pain is neither unbearable nor unending, as long as you keep in mind its limits and don't magnify them in your imagination." With this in mind I went all out and passed with 1:50 to spare. Gonna take my NREMT next week, and the written test the week after. I'll be using your videos for my EMT skills test! Thanks for uploading a bunch of helpful stuff!

I'm a 33 year old with a bachelors in communications and I just got hired on today at my local department in Georgia. I failed my department's version of the CPAT the first time at 5' 8"/228 lbs. We had 8 minutes and 20 seconds to complete ours. It's similar to the standard CPAT but without the stair mill (we carried hoses up four flights of stairs in a burnout building). I competed the test but over time at 10 minutes and 30 seconds. I trained by hiking 4 miles a day with a 50lb weighted vest and sprinting up hills. I also trained legs and shoulders and core and cardio hard at my gym four times a week. I passed the test on my second attempt at 210lbs at 8 minutes and 10 seconds. If I did it, so can you. You still need to get past the panel interview and the chief's interview, but if you can find the will and drive to beat the CPAT, you can ace the interviews too. Best of luck and don't give up! I'm glad I didn't.

I'm 51 and scheduled on 1/6/24 to take the CPAT. I'm an endurance runner and dabble in weight training. I'm hoping that will keep me a float on test day!

I just passed with 1:30ish remaining. i watched this video 10 or so times prior to have a better idea and it helped out so much. thankyou for this. what hit me the most was the breach push wasn't expecting it to be that heavy but I changed my grip and stance and blew through it.

Super helpful. Timed out on the last set on my first attempt. Took it again today and passed in just under 8 mins. Speed walking and not taking any breaks is key, once you slow down its hard to get going again

They got me on the ceiling pull...went over 10sec. For those of you doing it for your 1st time when you hit those stairs count to 180 AFTER they say your 20 second warm up is over.

I’m taking CPAT in the morning. I workout a good bit and I ref a lot of soccer so I run 10-15 miles/week easy. I’ve been carrying 35 lb dumbbells in both hands up hills to help train as well. Main thing I’m nervous about is balance on the stair climber but I think if that goes well I should be good. Thanks for the video.

I'm glad you've found the video helpful. The key with the stair master is to try your best to focus on your breathing and really watching each individual step. For me I found it extremely useful. I tried to not let myself get too worked up. Focused on each breath, took diligent and rhythmic steps to ensure I didn't accidentally trip myself 😂 You got this. For the most part, once you get rolling you become used to it pretty quickly and things begin to flow. Please keep me updated on how it goes. Good luck out there 😊

@@FirefighterAmbitions well I got past the stair stepper fine and I made it through the first 6 events in 7 minutes. All throughout orientation and prep they kept saying take your time walking from event to event to get your legs back so that’s what I was trying to do to keep my legs from giving out. The proctor didn’t like that apparently and kept telling me hurry or I wouldn’t make it when I knew I was killing the events in plenty of time and 3/4 of the way through the dummy pull my legs completely gave out and I couldn’t even stand up anymore. I was invited to apply at 2 other departments and their tests aren’t for a couple months so I will just train harder and be ready for it then.

@@FirefighterAmbitions the vest was a lot heavier that I thought it’d be. First course of action is to go buy the heaviest vest I possibly can find and and hit the stair climber in the gym at the same rate starting for 3:20 and progressive overload until I can comfortably do it for 10 minutes without my legs feeling like jello while also replicating the rest of the events the best I can inside the gym. I know my problem was my legs giving out so I’ve gotta get them as strong and conditioned as possible. Any more tips you have? ETA: also I’m not meaning to blame the proctor at all Im just frustrated a bit but I know the only person to blame is myself and I won’t let that be an option next time.

I was literally gonna tell you build your strength through cardio exercises and resistance training focusing on progressive overload 💪. Honestly focusing on the stair climb should be key. And yes strength too. But if you can easily do the 3 min with 75lbs.. then you should be good too go. My plan is to buy a attachment similar to weighted vest. But in this attachment I can add Olympic weight to my need.. gradually increasing the weight by 5 lbs each week. My plan is to do 100lbs. Gonna be insanely hard . But my cardiovascular will be insane.

Just did my cpat today and let me tell you the test is about endurance and your ability to push through. PUSH THROUGH! Your body is going to be telling you to stop and give up but PUSH THROUGH. I passed on my first attempt.

Im in my junior year of high school firefighting has always been my dream. I deal with physical induced asthma not to bad but it makes me worry I won't make it. Seeing ghis i see I've got work to do I'm taking weights every quater i can. Idk what I'd do if i can't make it on the team of my local fire departmemt thanks for the heads up on CPAT now i know what to look forward to

Today got 9 minutes on my practice CPAT and I’m a little embarrassed. I have the strength, being a prior infantryman. But I haven’t ran. So my body felt just fine but my lungs were burning. 3 weeks till the final and I’m trying to get it down to about 7 minutes

So I'm a severe hemophiliac with knee replacements in both knees. Been sitting at an office desk for the past 11 years. Dad was a 37 year firefighter. He tells me I'd be fine. I'm looking at this test, and I think I'd be done for after the stair climb. I doubt I'd have the cardio for that. I have core strength sure, but man that looks exhausting. I have issues with kneeling, but I may be able to chew through it in the tunnel section. The breach and lugging tools I'd be fine. Just my heart rate that worries me. I can't decide if this is something that I should pursue. I need to get out of this office. edit: To add, from the feedback that I get from other firefighters, the test is more difficult than the actual career.

Not Sure, it's awesome that you have interest in pursuing the career. To be straight forward with you, it seems like you have some serious health obstacles that can limit your ability to perform physically for the job of a firefighter. Not saying it cannot be done (depending on your mobility, pain, and pain tolerance level). Also, I'm not 100% sure if hemophilia is a disqualifying factor, you may want to look into those specifics with the fire departments you have interest in testing with. As for your knee replacements and the problem with kneeling, that is going to make it quite difficult to perform on the CPAT, during an actual fire academy, and throughout a fire career. All of the strenuous movements and activities we engage in as firefighters requires great leg mobility. Not saying you can't do it, but it sounds like you will be extremely limited by your statement above. Plain and simple, You need to see if you can qualify (health wise) for firefighter positions in your area. As for your cardio issue, you can always find ways to train and better your cardio performance. =) As for your statement about the difference in difficulty from the testing process and the actual career, I can personally agree with that. It was a GRIND volunteering, riding along, going through EMT school, training, studying for written exams, practicing my interview (DAILY), continuing to build a network, enduring a pre-academy practical, etc. Compared to being hired, running calls, training, and being a good teammate/roommate for the rest of the fire crews, etc. My honest opinion: you have some obstacles that will make it very difficult to be successful in the testing process alone. Again not saying you aren't capable of doing it, but with my experience enduring the firefighter testing process plus my experience in the career itself, and my experience in hiring firefighter candidates, your health complications are going to create major obstacles for you along the way, potentially making you a less desirable candidate. This isn't to say that you're not an awesome person. Department speaking it comes down to longevity and liability. Candidates that are just as awesome a you are with no health complications will likely be the one in favor of being hired. I want to take my hat off for your father and thank him for his service and paving the way for our generation of firefighters. And I want to wish you the best of luck in anything you set your heart out to pursue. Keep fighting for what you want until you truly can't anymore. GOOD LUCK out there!

Not Sure honestly if you really want this job you can do it! But don’t do it as a way to get out of your current job. Do it because you want it. Do it because you want to help and lead. Besides the physical aspects sometimes the mental aspect is harder. I lost a friend of mine to this job just a few years ago. I’ve seen some horrifying things. You have to really want it. Like I mean REALLY want it. In the hiring process they will find any way to find a mental weakness and self doubt is the most glaring. If your physical capabilities is what you think holds you back I’ll tell one simple machine that turned me around If you have the money get a concept 2 rower. I weighed 380 pounds out of high school after I tore my acl in football my junior year. I couldn’t run couldn’t go a week without back pains. Then a friend at my job at the time told me to try it 6 months of hard rowing and diet I was down 80 pounds with no stress on the knees Joined the fire department 4 years later when I was 24. I’m now 29 and it was all worth it. It’s free to try out. You don’t have anything to lose but you have so much to gain

I appreciate the two responses there fellas. I am too doubtful about both my cardio and my knees. That and with my hemophilia I am susceptible to injuries that could keep me off the job. I'm just going to face the fact that this wouldn't not be a wise choice. I'm simply facing too many obstacles. I'm used to having to pass on things that I simply cannot partake in. Its something I've always had to accept.

Honestly brother, I’m not sure who’s telling you that the CPAT is harder than the job, but that’s just not accurate. I’ve been on fires where I felt like my heart was going to beat out of my chest - and I cruise through the CPAT. Any actual search, interior push, or other fireground work can be for more than 10 minutes, in a literal oven, wearing bunker gear, with the added variable of adrenaline. The number 1 cause of death in the fire service is stress/over exertion (cardiac failure ) typically due to the fitness of guys who don’t stay perpetually fit for fires and who think the CPAT is the hardest part of the job. Consider looking into wildland firefighting. You’ll need some level of fitness (the test is 3 mile fast walk with 50ish lb vest in 45 min) you’ll get out of the office, experience adventure, and fill an increasing need. It’s seasonal, but hey, maybe you can start your fitness journey there? But anything can happen with the right drive.

im 16 and in high school, and i know firefighting is what i want to do. i have a lot of time to get stronger, and i feel better knowing what this test includes. thank you!! i want to go to university of alaska or sewanee, they have student fire departments. what would i do after i graduate college? would i go to a fire school or just apply to my local department? hope you see this!

Yes there are varying heights and area changes throughout the search event Not sure about the weight of the forcible entry event prop but the sledgehammer will be 10lbs The ceiling breach and pull event should be about 60lbs

The best way to remember the CPAT information is to watch tutorials like this multiple times and sign up to take the CPAT orientation (or walkthrough) when you purchase a CPAT testing session. There will be proctors that walk you through the entire CPAT as well that helps explain the tasks at hand, while simultaneously evaluating and timing your performance. And great questions, the skill stations in the CPAT require total body performance. So, for your gym/fitness preparation you want to focus on developing strength and endurance. For instance, the stair climb with a 75lb vest on can be challenging for those that don’t strengthen their legs, core, and endurance. So, you want to focus on exercises like the stair climbers, squats, lunges, step-ups, etc. and also strengthening your abs/core by engaging in various core/ab exercises. Try not to think of the CPAT skills as “I need to only climb a stair master to prepare”. Look at the bigger picture. What is required to climb the stairs at a rate of 60 steps per minute for 3 minutes efficiently? Endurance, leg strength, and core strength (balance, coordination, etc.) The same applies for the rest of the skills. For the force entry station, you want to focus on developing your core, leg strength, and upper body strength, so you can effectively and efficiently hold and control the 10lb sledgehammer delivering high force strikes to the prop. Don’t just think training for the CPAT literally. Of course, if you have access to the CPAT props you want to add those exercises to your training, but you still want to focus on developing your overall health and fitness entirely. And just a heads-up, your training should start in the kitchen. Make healthy nutrition a lifestyle. And be aware of your hydration habits. I hope this answers your questions and helps you out 😊

Being 6 months out I recommend a combination of everything you enjoy (I.e. sports, weight training, calisthenics, CrossFit, etc) Focus on progressive overload; consistently challenging yourself throughout your training. Be sure to incorporate the CPAT events into your training as well (I.e. the force entry prop can be translated into tire strikes with a sledge hammer or similar tool) The closer you get to your CPAT date focus on circuit style training (similar to the CPAT) moving from one exercise to the next for a specific time frame, rep range, or whatever you desire. This plus additional “cardio” will help you prepare 💪🏼 Hope this helps

Im a little concerned on the forcible entry.. I am left handed and that set up looks to be for righty’s, do they adjust this for a lefty or is it just default?

That shouldn't be a problem for you. I've seen both right and left handed candidates adjust to the prop with no problems. The key is to take solid strikes at the middle point of the force entry prop. Be sure to train by striking tires and building your legs, upper body, and core/oblique strength. When do you plan on taking the CAT on?

Lots of good hydration, eat well and enough to properly prepare your body, roll-out and stretch those sore muscles for sure. Also, Ice a little if you can. @@daddyland it was way harder than what was on the video because they actually had a flight of 4 stairs for us to run up and down 2 times and being that I'm in Texas it was super humid and hot, I had it under control the entire time but when I was going the dummy drag/carry i tried to out do the best person there and carry it just like he did instead of dragging him, which made me super tired being that I'm 160lbs and I was exhausted from the other exercises. But nonetheless I passed and they welcomed me on board. I have academy orientation next month on the 19th and graduate july 7th I believe

Started training at home and have my first open practice session on May 3rd. I already know that Ill probably need to focus on improving my stair climb. I can do the full 3 minutes, but i barely have anything left in the tank once i finish. One question, what should i use to practice forcible entry at home? I know i need a 10 pound sledgehammer, but i dont want to destroy anything i swing at. What should i get that can withstand the beating?

Great question. Work on your core and obliques utilizing various core, ab, and obliques movements (i.e. Medball Russian Twist, barbell atlas swings, and lying windmills is a great start) - Medball slams is a great exercise - Various medball tosses/throws is great, especially medball lateral toss - of course any squat or lunge exercises to aid in your leg strength - Cardio! Do various forms of cardio exercises to help increase your endurance. Depending on your sledgehammer strike accuracy and the forcible entry prop you hit, you can potentially be swinging that 10ld sledgehammer a fair amount of times. By time you get to this station you may be pretty winded already, so do what you have to do to increase your endurance. - And so much more... Long story short, you can technically take the training program of an athlete and have a solid preparation fitness regimen for yourself. As a 29 year old with nothing but an associates in business is it too late to pursue firefighting? I’ve been reading the age limit is mid 30s in most places. I’m just wondering how long it usually takes as soon as my junior college opens up registration for summer and fall I want to take as many classes possible to speed up the process any tips??

It is absolutely not too late for you to pursue a fire career. My advice is to look into EMT programs and enroll ASAP, so you can become eligible to test for departments that you qualify for.

I'm a 33 year old with a bachelors in communications and I just got hired on today at my local department in Georgia. I failed my department's version of the CPAT the first time at 5' 8"/228 lbs. We had 8 minutes and 20 seconds to complete ours. It's similar to the standard CPAT but without the stair mill (we carried hoses up four flights of stairs in a burnout building). I competed the test but over time at 10 minutes and 30 seconds. I trained by hiking 4 miles a day with a 50lb weighted vest and sprinting up hills. I also trained legs and shoulders and core and cardio hard at my gym four times a week. I passed the test on my second attempt at 210lbs at 8 minutes and 10 seconds. If I did it, so can you. You still need to get past the panel interview and the chief's interview, but if you can find the will and drive to beat the CPAT, you can ace the interviews too. Best of luck and don't give up! I'm glad I didn't.

I whooped my Cpat. It was pretty easy but I will say the Cpat demonstrations you see on youtube make it look a lot easier than it is. You see the events done individually and you think "cake walk" but you cant fail to remember one major detail... Lactic acid.

Anybody know the weight of the last event? I’ve been training with a different version of the ceiling breach and have been practicing with 60lbs. But in the actual event, what’s the weight you’re pushing and pulling?

I've been told that fire academy is a lot tougher than the CPAT. Understandable because there are so many factors on the job that includes wearing your gear, difficult situations and environmental factors combined whereas the CPAT is non distracted and controlled obstacles in workout clothes. My best friend is with SFFD so hopefully I can join him one day.

Hey Sekayi, my apologies for the late response. Hope you are having a good time these holidays. The best advice I can give you for the force entry event is to buy yourself a 10lb sledge hammer (or use someones) and train with it. Ideally if you can get a tire to strike the sledge hammer against while training that would be huge. I personally use it for myself and to train my clients. You'd be surprised at how fast you become comfortable handling the sledge hammer. I like to incorporate it into my circuit style training days. For example, I will endure 8-12 separate exercises for about 3-4 rounds (1 of the exercises being tire strikes of course; preferably the last exercise of the list). This style of training usually last from 20-40 minutes depending on the exercises and how I'm feeling that day. On top of all this, you want to continue to train your upper body, core, legs, cardio, flexibility/mobility if you're already doing so. I always tell my students to pick the topics or skills they are weakest at and put more effort into those to speed up the development process in those areas. For example, if the sledge hammer (forced entry) event is one of your weakest events, then be sure to train alil extra in that area. Be sure not to neglect what your good at though lol Have you taken the CPAT before? Have you tested before? Where are you testing? Do you understand what the firefighter recruitment process entails? What other questions or concerns do you have?

@@ZaexSol You will need a lil more education. EMT at a minimum. There are many California departments that require a paramedic license &/or firefighter 1 &/or 2 certification to be eligible for hire. So it all depends on what departments you set out to pursue. You have to research the department you want to work for and see what their requirements are. Start by doing that and enrolling into an EMT program to get the ball rolling.

From my time instructing/running the CPAT course for my department and college EMS/Fire academy, I've seen a hand full of candidates not pass. When I say a handful, I mean that literally. A majority of the candidates/students I've seen passed the CPAT. Also, from my time testing and taking several CPATS from different organizations, i've seen only one person not pass. It's no secrete that there are candidates that fail the CPAT, but from my experience and from the experience of my peers, the pass rate is definitely higher than the fail rate. Speaking of "FAILING," you'd be surprised at how many candidates don't show up to their testing time/date. Thats an automatic fail. I tell my students you should be more worried about making it to the CPAT on time, rather than worrying about not passing the CPAT. lol 😂 It is so true. The CPAT is the minimum level physical requirement to be eligible to be a firefighter. It is totally doable. I must say, it can be challenging. Especially if you're pushing yourself to get a lower run time; which doesn't really matter in the end because it is a pass/fail exam lol. But the challenge is definitely fun. 💪 Doing a little research on the topic, I came across a study that was seeking ways to improve the hiring process of firefighters. The case study was based out of LA with a sample size of over 13,000 candidates. Long story short, it was concluded that over 90% of the candidates that took the CPAT, passed. There was overwhelming evidence that the CPAT test alone doesn't eliminate many firefighter candidates. I couldn't agree more with their research analysis. With that being said, there are several variables to consider: - Testing location - Ambient temperature/weather (I took a CPAT outside on a summer day (110+ degrees) in Arizona on a black top and it was by far the hardest CPAT i've ever taken/been apart of. If my preparation wouldn't have been on point prior to, that test for me could've been "questionable" lol 😂that CPAT was no joke) - The specific candidate testing (i.e. their strength and conditioning level, Do they fully understand the CPAT course itself [each individual skill], how they prepared themselves prior to, the night before, and day of, existing injuries, etc) - Accidents (i.e. honest mistakes on the CPAT course that led to a failed test) What I'm trying to show you here is that there can be several variables that can lead to more candidates failing the CPAT test. But for the most part the success rates overpower that of the failure rates. As for how long does it take for departments to hire candidates, it all depends on the specific fire department. Some FD's open their testing processes to create a 1-2 year eligibility list (a list of the candidates that pass each exam throughout the testing process). Some FD's open their testing processes to hire right away (i.e. if a department is hiring off of a grant and they are time restricted on when to hire firefighters). I was in a couple of testing processes at once and they all had different hiring/testing time periods. The department that hired me opened their testing process up and hired my academy brothers and I all in a span of a couple months (3-4 months). The other departments I was testing for didn't even complete their interview processes before I got hired and I started testing with them well before the department that hired me. So it all depends on the specific needs and resources of the individual department. Support and resources play a huge role as well for the fire departments. If they don't have the resources to hire firefighters then you can expect them to not hire firefighters for awhile (or at least until they get the resources to do so). The key with this is to be open-minded and expand your testing area. TEST EVERYWHERE you possibly can (within reason of course). Test places you'd like to work. Get in there, gain experience, give the grind all you have, and land a job. I hope this helps 😊

Running definitely helps prepare you for the CPAT. But I encourage you to do several different types of training (i.e. weight/resistance training, circuit training, interval training, HIIT, LISS (like you already do), calisthenic training, plyometrics, etc. The key is progressive overload. Continually push yourself to greater limits, challenging your body every time you train. And do your best to throw the CPAT events into your training as well. For example for the stair climb, you want to be sure that you either use a stair climber or run/walk flights of stairs to help better prepare you for that specific event. You can also do lunges, squats, leg press, etc to help build strength and muscle endurance. I hope this helps you When do you plan on taking the CPAT?

I passed the first try but the main problem I’ve had is extending the fly. The halyard always slides right through my gloves even though I’m strong enough to lift it. It’s a pain

Hey Andy, I personally use the 50lb run max weight vest while doing specific training for firefighting. You can get it on amazon. I used a spark weight vests for years and loved them as well. I've been extremely pleased with the run max. And for the price it was a steal. If you do decide to go with that weight vest, i recommend grabbing the additional shoulder pads that go with it. It will be an additional cost to you but they come in handy. It will take alil time to get used to the weight on your shoulders and traps (especially depending on the weight you get), so the shoulder pads can help out alil. I didn't originally buy them and after some time I bought another vest and decided to get the shoulder pads to see what difference they made and it definitely helped alil. For the forced entry how is it decided when the buzzer goes off? Is it a timer or a pressure sensor or something else?

There is a pressure sensor that is activated once the strike pad is hit to it. The key is to take solid and efficient strikes to the midline of the strike pad. I’ve seen many candidates try to hit the pad as fast as they could with low force strikes. This way takes a while to get the buzzer activated and can completely deplete your energy. So remember to swing hard and efficiently. You’d be surprised at how fast you c an get that buzzer to activate 💪🏼. When are you taking the CPAT?

Hi I have a kinda odd question, I’ve started training on the step mill with a 60 lb vest (the heaviest one I could find) but I’ve found it difficult to not grab the handles to keep my balance, do you have any advice on how to improve my balance on the step mill so I can be ready for the CPAT?

Great question Jacob, there are several exercises you can do to help increase your balance. The best thing you can do is to strengthen your core/abs (i.e. doing core/ab/oblique exercises) and continue to practice on a stair climber at your local gym, eventually you will become more comfortable with it. Other great exercises I teach my students are: (Note: if you prefer, you can add weight by using a weight vest, barbell, kettle bells and/or dumbbells) 💪Step-ups to hip extension (step-up on a box or whatever you can that has a decent amount of height while driving your floating leg/knee to your chest) ⏩ do 5-10 reps each side 💪Lateral step-ups to hip extensions (step-up laterally on a box or anything with height while driving your floating leg/knee to your chest) ⏩do 5-10 reps each side 💪Static split lunges (simply put, stand in-place in a split stance and lunge in place) ⏩ do 10-20 reps each side 💪Walking lunges (⏩ do 10-20 total reps [lunge for reps or lunge for distance or whatever you prefer) 💪Knee get-ups (**from the floor**) simply put, start from the floor on both knees then stand up on one leg until your standing on both (⏩ do 5-10 reps each leg) 💪RDL (can also be referred to as a straight leg deadlift, be sure when doing this exercise that the bar stays close to your body and as you lower the bar push your hips and butt back and out, while keeping your chest up) ⏩ do 10-12 reps 💪Single leg RDL (similar to RDL, but you are only standing on one leg, while the other follows in-line with you back) ⏩ do 5-10 reps each side 💪Squats (Be sure to focus on your breathing and keeping your core tight when doing this exercise) ⏩ do 10-12 reps 💪Leg press (focus on good form and not allowing you knees to go over your toes) ⏩ do 10-12 reps 💪Single leg press (same as leg press) ⏩do 10-12 reps each side 💪Farmer carry (integrate these in between your normal exercises to increase fatigue and also promote strength, stability, and endurance) There are many exercises out there that can help you reach your goal. These are a few exercises you can mix and match to gain strength, endurance, and stability. YOGA is another HUGE workout that will definitely increase balance as well. If you haven't done so yet i'd highly recommend you try it. It will also help increase your mobility and flexibility. Yes its 85ft between events and it is a continuous clock from the time you begin your stair climb event until you finish the ceiling breach and pull event or run out of time.

Hey! I’m not sure if you will reply but I’m 18 years old (female) and I really want to be a firefighter, I’m starting college in 2 weeks and I’ll be majoring in fire science. I want to prepare ahead of time as much as I can, I’m physically unfit and overweight. Do you have any advice and tips on what type of exercise I should focus on? Your priority right now should be to start making some healthy nutrition and training habits (developing it into a healthy LIFESTYLE). A firefighter career has a high physical demand as i sure you know. We can discuss a lot about the topics you've asked about. But to be brief if I were you, I'd personally start by finding exercises you enjoy doing (for the purpose of doing the exercises often and consistently). For me personally I find the most enjoyment in playing basketball or lifting weights. Once you develop a habit of engaging in your exercises that you enjoy, begin to incorporate other exercises building on the foundation you've started for yourself. This way you continue to challenge and push your body (a form of progressive overload). As you engage in physical activity consistently, begin to focus on cardio/muscle endurance. The further you advance and the more comfortable you become with your fitness abilities, Here are some exercise topics you want to make sure are in your training schedule: - Interval training - Circuit training - Super-set training - Core/abs training - Weight (or resistance) training - Cardio exercises - mobility/flexibility training - Recovery exercises - Firefighter skill training (i.e. skills course: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4WYoIOVmZWdmck ) - etc. Be diligent about your safety throughout your training, push yourself hard, but don't get hurt. You don't want miss out on opportunities to test. As for you advice to someone who's just starting out: The best advice I can give you is to make "PREPARATION" a priority in your life. Meaning: • Be sure to check out all of our content for further information about the firefighter recruitment process and the career of a firefighter - kzbin.info - www.firefighterambitions.com Do your research on the departments you wish to soon work for (i.e. know what their specific hiring requirements are, what the department has to offer, what their capabilities are, etc.) • Obtain/ meet the necessary requirements to be eligible to test. • Make healthy nutrition a LIFESTYLE. 9/10 times make the right decisions in your nutrition. Your body is your greatest asset and tool. Take care of it. You only get ONE! • Develop and consistently stick to a strict fitness regimen. As stated in the previous bullet point, you have to give your body a chance to perform for you. A firefighter career has a high physical demand. You need to be ready for what’s ahead (Physical examinations, practical’s/pre-academies, fire academy, the career, training, Calls, lack of sleep etc.) • Start studying NOW. Get some firefighter written exam study materials and work on them daily. Find out what your strengths and weakness are, then begin to formulate a plan to become stronger in each area (i.e. math, mechanical aptitude, reading compression, memory, order of operations, etc.) • WORK ON YOUR INTERVIEWS EVERYDAY! I can’t stress this enough. The firefighter interview is unlike any other interview (its totally doable though, I’m not trying to scare you here lol). But it can be quite challenging without the proper preparation. You have to make it a priority in your life to set aside time DAILY to develop and work on your interview. Focusing on YOU, YOUR STORY, WHY BEING A FIREFIGHTER IS RIGHT FOR YOU, and WHAT YOU HAVE TO OFFFER THE FIRE SERVICE. (there are handfuls of questions I could ask you that can be answered by simply focusing on the topics I’ve just stated). • Continue to be a lifelong learner. If you have the resources and time, take some fire classes, nutrition classes, fitness classes, leadership classes, etc, while you're simultaneously testing for a firefighter position. All this does is gives you more life experience, more knowledge, more to talk about come interview day, and it makes you more marketable. • When able to do so (post pandemic), GET OUT and NETWORK with other firefighter candidates, firefighters, and fire departments. Get out, slap some hands, and show the firefighters and fire departments what you have to offer them. (Note: Anytime you are around firefighters you’re being interviewed (or evaluated) so you must be on your best behavior 100% of the time. One bad interaction can ruin you before you even begin. Take this seriously). I can talk for hours about these topics; just know the MAIN POINT I’m trying to make here is that you need to do everything in your power to become an UNDENIABLE candidate. Right on. You can take any path to the job that works best for you and your schedule. I went the 4-year degree route first, then fire. Others go straight into fire. Both are solid plans. Whatever is best for you is key. I recommend that when you are 100% ready to pursue a fire career, go get your EMT ASAP so you can become eligible to test for many departments out there ASAP. As a 17 year old 5’4” female, who’s 110lbs, do you have any tips to pass? It’s a far way off but it’s never too soon to start preparing! I’m currently looking into purchasing a weighed vest to work with, but cannot access any equipment like hammers or tires, or a stair step machine. Any substitute workouts that would aid in passing the test, and especially the breaching part? Also, any tips on a workout to improve all of the muscles and attributes you need for this test? Absolutely. What you want to do is start with generally building up your endurance engaging in cardio exercises that you enjoy. Incorporate resistance training with an emphasis on progressive overload (gradually challenging yourself every time you train). This can be done by: - increasing the weight of an exercise (higher intensity) - changing the frequency of the repetition (i.e. more volume) - decreasing the rest time between sets - etc If you don't have access to CPAT specific equipment, you'll have to get creative and do your best to simulate the CPAT events. For example, instead of utilizing a stair master, go find a stair case near you, add some weight to your body (anyway that you safely can) and start walking or running those stairs. Another example would be, instead of having a force entry prop and sledgehammer, get a medicine ball and perform medball slams (utilizing various slamming techniques) to build your strength and prepare yourself for the force entry prop of the CPAT. You have to get creative when resources are limited to you. When I began, I didn't have access to many pieces of equipment either. So I did a lot of circuit style bodyweight and weight vest training to help prepare myself for my CPAT test. That plus a lot of cardio to build my endurance. Here is the weight vest I use: amzn.to/2WezMgM The key to properly preparing for the CPAT is to specifically train for it. If you don't normally engage in circuit style training, then you may want to start, so you can acclimate and be prepared for the CPAT; which is basically one big circuit. Building your strength and endurance is vital. Find out what your weaknesses are when it comes to fitness and work at it. I hope this helps you Let me know if I can clarify anything for you. Entry level firefighter positions are set for anybody capable of successfully performing the job. Meaning, it is made for people with no previous fire experience to individuals with fire experience. We as firefighters can train you to be a firefighter, we cant necessarily train you to be a good person and a hard worker. Hope that answers your question.

I take the cpat this Friday! Nervous about the stepper but I've been on a stair climber with a 50lb vest for a while now. Is the vest in the video the same type of vest used in any cpat nationwide?

Right on Alex. I'm Excited for you. And good work on training ahead of time. The stair climb tires many candidates out quickly, making the rest of the test more difficult. Proper preparation definitely helps to eliminate a lot of that difficulty. As for the vest, it may or may not vary. If if it does vary at all, I'm sure it'll be little difference. From the tests I've taken, conducted, and heard about from other candidates, the vests were all the same/similar. IF I can offer you any advice for the stair climb, it is to calm yourself down, focus on your breathing, and be diligent with every step you take. @@FirefighterAmbitions They haven't said yet. They'll be doing another round of CPATs beginning of September so I expect to hear something around then. I feel pretty good about the interviews though. I feel like I want to be a firefighter for all the right reasons so I'm just gonna be myself and answer honestly. The tentative hire date is December 14.

I HATE the stairs , passed the test multiple times and the stairs are by far the worst ! My calves will be burning! 🔥 practice at the gym and get better. Everything after the stairs is cake 🍰

I was a Firefighter for 6 years. I have been out for almost 10 years and I'm fixing to turn 34 is it possible for me to get hired at my age or even at 35 so I have time to prepare my body?

Cody Layton if you are worried about just your age in particular, it shouldn’t be an issue at all. As you may know the hiring age is very diverse in the service. Many of my academy brothers were well in the 30’s and some in the 40’s. I’ve also helped hired candidates in their 30’s. As long as your background is clean, you have all the required requirements, you crush the testing process, and you are in great health and physical standings, then you have a solid shot at landing the job again just like other candidates. Your age comes with experience as well, and you know how valuable life experience is to firefighters. Also your experience as a firefighter is definitely a strength in your corner because you GET IT. You understand the trade, you been apart of the grind, you understand the chain of command, and fire service traditions, etc. Where did you work before? Was it a career position?

@@FirefighterAmbitions I was a volunteer working towards become a career Firefighter. I stepped away when I decided to have a family and let years of sports injuries heal. I started training again last year and everything was going well. I think a lot of people are in the mind set that I'm too old but I keep hearing things from guys my age or older saying I can still do it. When I came across the videos it just took that doubt I was having and made that urge to get back into the fire service even stronger.

@@codylayton3379 Right on. Its HUGE that you have fire experience already. And yeah, age shouldn't hold you back, you are still young. Keep doing what you're doing fitness wise and get yourself back into shape. I'm sure you know already, but do a great job of making healthy nutrition a LIFESTYLE. You have to give your body a chance to fight/perform for you. It's no secrete that you will be competing against 18-25 year olds. So you must do a great job of giving yourself every edge that you can. With all this being said, I'm glad you've reached out and expressed your concerns. @@pw5835 once it's in your blood it's hard to let it go. Even if I don't ever get back on a truck their are other things I can do. I've looked into running heavy equipment and possibly getting my pilot's license and flying during wild fire season. I can even get a degree and get behind the desk and do many things there also. It's like I've been told by many retired or active fire fighters we earned that title and it's always ours. And with every day that passes I just remember that. It can be an emotional at times but to me that just means I haven't quit yet.

You want to really focus on your nutrition. Making healthy nutrition a lifestyle. 9/10 times making the right decisions of what you put into your mouth. Are you currently training at all? or are you starting from scratch? Generally I tell candidates to focus on engaging in circuit, tri-set, superset, interval training, and HIIT training. The key here is to start training like the CPAT is ran. The CPAT is a continuous test, moving from one event to the next with little to no break (depending on your fitness level). So you want to conduct your workouts similar to that so you get your body used to the circuit style training. Also you want to try to incorporate the actual CPAT events into your training as well; if possible. For example: Stair climb: you want/need to get on a stair climber and get acclimated. As you progress add some weight to your body by holding dumbbells or wearing a weight vest Hose drag: Do sprints, sled pulls, prowler pushes, tire pulls, etc Equipment carry: Dumbbell farmer carry, dumbbell dead lift, RDL, Core/ab exercises, etc Ladder raise and extension: pull ups, chin ups, rows, Lat pull down, push-ups, core/ab exercises, etc Force entry: tire strikes, oblique/core exercises, forearm/hand grip, tricep and bicep exercises, etc. Search: Acclimate to confined dark spaces, pushups, core exercises (planks), etc Rescue: Reverse Sled pulls (back pedal), dead lift, tire flips, etc Ceiling breach and pull: Tire strikes, oblique/core exercises, forearm/hand grip, tricep and bicep exercises, squats, lunges etc. Get out there and work on increasing your cardio/endurance. It'll play a huge factor into your CPAT test. I hope this helps you out When do you plan on taking the test?

@@jacoblashell7859 Okay perfect. Sounds like you're already all over it. Focus on your traditional main lifts while throwing in some cardio in between sets or add them in at the end of your workout. What I mean by cardio is: - Medball slams - Row machine intervals - Sprints - Treadmill sprints - Inclined walk - Jump rope - Battle ropes - Farmer carry - Plyometrics (i.e. broad jumps, vertical jumps, etc) - Medball toss (explosive movements) - Burpees - etc Add exercises to challenge your endurance to help better prepare you for your CPAT. I went on a long distance run (1-3 miles depending) about 2-3 times a week as well to add some training I never really do. Be sure to time yourself each time you go if you choose to do so. That way you can track your progress.
