I am glad you said they are not schooling fish. I think they do well in a heavily planted tank where they can steak out their territories. They won't fight to the death like betta's but they would keep re-establishing their place. But they lived a long time. The last two lived about 6 years.

I love mine. I have 9 of them with 5 Harlequin Rasbora and 3 Endlers in a 13 gallon planted tank. They stay mid tank and school loosely, but really don't seem to hide much. I also have 3 Panda Loaches and some Neo shrimp, which gives me lots to watch at all levels of the tank.

+Ryan Hotchin I keep a really dense area of have moss that the fish can't really swim into well. It became a fish sanctuary. It's like a little city in there. Some get eaten a lot survive. But it balances out. I started with about thirty and never really bought more than the occasional nice female to keep the genetics diverse.

I have a group of 6 small CPDs in with ember tetras, sparkling gouramis, glowlight tetras, and orange von rio tetras. They often swim with the embers, who are closest to them in size. I switch between about 5 kinds of food, always making sure some of it is ground down to powder size so everyone can eat. I have a good number of plants, none of them are very big yet, but the CPDs haven't been overly shy and swim all through my 29G tank. I only got them a few days ago. They're doing good at filling out their thin bellies, and I'm looking forward to being able to see them easier as they grow. They are beautiful little fish.

I have 15 of these, 15 Cardinals and 15 Ember tetras. They tend to swim around in one giant school all together, the Embers group together tightly within the school while the Cardinals and CPD's spread out within it. Mine aren't all that shy, I'm wondering if that's because the Cardinals are so outgoing and make them feel safe.

I collected eggs from my 6 CPDs over a month every day or so using the moss dish method. They are housed in a 46 litre bowfront with 5 Pygmy corys. They aren’t always out n about but def not hiding away all the time. I would sit in morning n have a coffee watching them for 25 minutes placing hand near tank glass so they’d get used to someone there. I placed the eggs into a 20 litre fry tank with moss. they simply hatch in 48 hours or so. After 7 weeks I transferred them all into a 60 litre counting as I went, 82. I even kept tally of how many eggs I’d put in, over a hundred. Found 5 dead in the 60 litre over next month which could be just natural passings or some larger picking at smaller. I did massive clean of 60 litre yesterday removing all fish n counting roughly. Approx 69/70 now so a few more had disappeared. I’ve had buyers for all 80 right from the 4 week old fry mark so I’m happy about that for 10$ each, I bought mine for 16.95$ Aussie which is the current store price going. Electricity bill went up almost double over breeding months but the money will cover that. They are roughly at the 10 to 11 week old mark Rachel and most have celestial dots but quite hard to sex them yet. I’m looking for black spot near anal fin but how do I know if poop or black dot? The fins aren’t coloured up enough for that alone to define. I thought the males had a very distinct pale stripe along head n back but a lot of mine do...do the females also? I was hoping to be able to atleast sex some for my buyers incase they with to breed or simply just so there’s not too many men amongst the group. Yes some are darker or paler tummy but still hard to tell. I got my breeding advice from Mark at Marks Aquatics on youtube. Great down to earth English dude, love his relaxed homey videos...not posey like some you get. Any more advice on sexing juveniles would be great Rachel. Water changes are hard with fry as you don’t wanna suck them up so sadly I did not do water changes as often as I would...he seems they could have grown quicker n maybe for healthier. Lisa x

Hey Rachel! I just bought 10 of them and put them in a cycled, moderately planted 10 gallon with my small but relatively established red cherries. Did your way of plop and drop and kept the lights out throughout the process and for about another hour. Fed them live daphnia and then turn the lights on after a while. The things is, I expected them to be very shy and hide in the plants like what you've said. Instead, what I am seeing are 10 EXTREMELY active and social fish that swim around A LOT (both around plant covers and through uncovered open swimming space available) and gravitate especially to the side of the tank where they can see me. Is this normal behavior for newly introduced CPDs (or fish in general)? I really don't know if all this excitement comes out of stress of being in a new tank or them just really enjoying what they perceive to be a safe new tank.
@lizardbabies7 жыл бұрын
If you have enough CPD's and the tank is well planted, they're not nearly as shy. My CPD's killed all of my cherry shrimp. They were sharing a large bunch of java moss with the shrimp, and were in full breeding/spawning behavior, and I think they just didn't like the shrimp in their breeding area. I started with a breeding colony of cherries, about 20. I had 12 CPD's, good ratio of males to females. They haven't bothered the Amano shrimp in the tank. When I questioned the place I bought both the danios and the shrimp from, they said I must have too much copper in my water. Not sure how that factored in since I have cherry shrimp in other tanks using the same water source, or how the pieces of shredded shrimp I found happened. Only other fish in the tank are several panda corydoras, not typically known for attacking anything, let alone shrimp.

HI Rachel. I have been binge watching your videos, very cool. May try a planted bin this summer. I have 8 juvenile CPD in a fluval spec V, planted. They will move to bigger tank in a couple months. I have kept 15 wild caught in a 30g and hardly saw them until my evening low viewing light came on. However with the tank raised onesthat I now have, they are quite sociable and even come to the glass in anticipation of being fed, I arranged plants and they came to investigate my chopstick with no fear. My question is" Will this sociable behavior disappear after moving to a 30g tank? Thanks
@RachelOLeary7 жыл бұрын
That depends a lot on decor. You may want to get more to add to the group, or combine them with another small "fearless" fish to help them feel secure with that much space. Thanks for the kind words! I am glad you are enjoying my channel!

Mine are not shy at all somehow. I used to have shy ones. For some time I had no tank. Now I bought CPD's again and these are not shy. They come to glass when they see me. They come to inspect new objects in their tank for example when I am gravel vacuuming. They don't fear a betta that is living with them . Maybe that betta is their dither fish, cos often they seem to follow him . I am lucky that my betta doesn't see them as food. Though risk was high, because I bought them almost at fry size. Anyway none are missing and they are almost adult size now.

I got 8 of these guys for my 5 gallon fluval spec. I temp acclimated them for about a half hour before netting them and putting them in the tank. They colored up immediately and didn't seem shy at all after a few hours. They ate the same day (I fed them some crushed flake food) and they seemed to be thriving. They seemed to die at a consistent rate of 2 per day after that even though they weren't showing signs of sickness or stress. I would wake up and inspect the tank and to an attendance basically, always to find 2 dead somewhere. My water parameters are good, and the flow in the tank is low. But they all died? I would love some help with this because I have never had die off before, especially not on this scale. I get all my fish from the same store. I really am at a loss with what to do :(

+thetheflyinghawaiian I have a bunch of emerald dwarves (Danio Erythromicron) too. When I first got them, they hid most of the time, but now I have them in a densely planted tank with neons and male guppies. They are much more confident when they know that they can reach cover with the flick of a fin. sometimes they even get into sparring matches with the male guppies even though the guppies outweigh them by about five to three. I think they would make good inhabitants for a small tank close to your desk or chair because their colors are quite beautiful from close up, but end to fade into grey when seen from a distance.

As a start food, I use Paramecium caudatum (you can breed it in a small tank or in a jar, use dry banana peel or several drops of milk - try both to choose the best way for you). Some later I include feeding the egg yolk, Sera micron (you can use spirulina), micro-worms. And after that I begin to feed my galaxies with Dero furcata and Enchytraeus buchholzi. In the US as I know you guys often use the so-called blackworms. Great video, Rachel!

I have a one-species 20 gallon long with 16 CPD’s of all ages. They use the entire tank so much I don’t want to add anything else. They’re so much fun to watch with their awesome personalities and politics. Easily my favorite tank.

My local store refused to pick them based on sex for me, so I think I have 5 males and 2 females now. I do love them though, they're in a 14 gallon long together with a single male Honey gourami and they're not shy at all! They explore everywhere and seem to "invite" the gourami out of hiding too :)

Would these fish be safe for shrimp?
@RachelOLeary7 жыл бұрын
they will eat baby shrimp, but are a popular choice- though not one I would choose for a shrimp tank
