While I am glad for the extra CPL team, big market cities already have lots of competition for the sports fans to spend their dollars.. A smaller market team should be where we go next, preferably Atlantic Canada, preferably St. John’s , which is a great soccer city. 1985 at King George field was the crucial game that qualified Canada for the 1986 World Cup.

From that interview I can see that the whole idea of David Clanachan for promotion/relegation is a total sham. The reason being, this guy is talking about franchises and the fact that the board of directors should approve whether one teams comes or not. Promotion/relegation has nothing to do with this bullshit. And as he is Scottish he knows that perfectly well. Here is how it happens in countries that have real open system. Let's say your team is in Div 3 and finishes the year as the best team in its division. The team has to be promoted to Div 2, right? Not necessarily. There are 2 situations where the team does not get promoted: A. They don't want to; B. They want to, but they do not meet certain criteria. Almost always the criteria are connected either to the stadium or the finances. For instance in this country Div 2 stadiums require X amount of seats and the team doesn't have them. They have to add new seats in order to go up. From financial prospective they have to have the money to pay all their employees and all their bills like electricity bills, gasoline when they go to away games, water utility bills etc. For a low level team this is very hard, because they either do not have any sponsor on the jersey at all or if they do it could be a local businessman that doesn't have enough money anyway. That is the reason why it is not unbelievable for a team that should be promoted to reject the promotion as they don't think they would be able to make it financially. Why do I say all this stuff? Because just from what David Clanachan is saying is obvious as a bright day that his whole project with the CPL is to get to a certain amount of teams and have a close system. In the best case scenario CPL could have up to 40 teams (20 in Premier League + 20 in Championship). I strongly doubt it would be that high. Highly optimistic would be to have 32 teams in the future (16 in Premier League + 16 in Championship). The possibly worst case scenario would be something like (10-12 in Premier League + 10-12 in Championship). Once the league is set the door is closed to all teams that didn't get in in time. In other words League 1 Ontario and the Quebec league will never have a chance to be promoted to Championship and move forward. This doesn't happen with franchise system and Board of Directors that have decided that enough is enough. Whomever got in got in. The fact that you have decided to split a bunch of teams from a closed league into 2 divisions does not make this promotion/relegation as long as nobody else can get in.
@dgh6g33gf3 жыл бұрын
God I hope the CPL develops in Quebec soon, you really can't call yourself a national league, while excluding the second biggest historical founding half/third of this country and the second most populous province!

That’s the point of football, in Europe usually cities with history and heritage (silverware) and huge populations have successful teams, BUT, I neglected to mention, that rich owners and benefactors, also make a team successful, assuming they know what they’re doing, although I will agree we should have drafts, 100%, as we are used to drafts in sports, although a little offtopic, but I respect they’re keeping transfers a thing, as I couldn’t see football without transfers, which The CPL got right, unlike the MLS with its stupid trade system.
