Retired now, but I use to fly the MD-11 in the cargo configuration. This aircraft came with an Auto-land feature which was fantastic. In real bad weather after the autopilot landed the plane and the main tires were on the ground and the nose was still in the air...you couldn't see anything. After the autopilot landed the nose...then you could see the runway. The only way you could get the plane to turn off the centerline was to disengaging the autopilot. I flew learjets out of Aspen when I was younger...retired now in Florida. .

TEX was a real treat before they leveled the runway. We called it the salad bowl because it dipped so low in the middle. At my last flight safety sim in the Lear 60, which is a climbing beast, we positioned to TEX and took off on 9, towards the box canyon. Easily got to 15K before the falls. Always room to turn around if we lost an engine. Most beautiful part of Colorado, and I'm even a big Steamboat fan.
@marksamuelsen2750 Жыл бұрын
I used to fly into TEX about 20 times a winter. Started in a WestWind and then a Citation 3. If the wx was good it wasn’t to bad. The aircraft owner had a home there and loved to go skiing. Great huh?

I landed a Learjet 35 there. Had to go around because we were so unstable. The thin air makes your ground speed so much faster. On takeoff the emergency pressurization went off because the cabin pressure was above 9500. It is the most challenging airport I ever landed at. The town is gorgeous.

If you want challenging, try Glenwood Springs or even Granby. Glenwood is truly one way in, one way out (with some nice trees thrown in on departure), and at both a go-around started too late can be hazardous to your health! Nothing better though than flying in the mountains!

...as a (hang) glider pilot, I was reminded via books, instructor, other pilots about the need to keep UP the airspeed while flying downwind especially! And to be ready for a steeper glideslope to landing at very high elevations due to much thinner air and/or stronger headwinds and/or venturi etc.

Three years ago, I could not find a CFI to make the trip in my 182. Waited for perfect weather and made the flight from Durango, straight in on 09 with about 25 gallons of gas. Easy. The departure on 09 was a little harder, due to the rising terrain to the east.

I remember way back in 1968, when a friend of my family was a pilot for Braniff, he loved flying and had his own twin engine prop, and on his days off, he'd fly to Loveland, which only opened something like 3 or 4 years before that. I asked him if he liked jets better. I'll never forget his answer: " *Nope! Props are tops, jets are for kids* "

Scariest landing I ever made. There is a lot going on, mountains, winds, canyons, etc., in the area of KTEX. I was flying in with my instructor pilot. The wind was neutral for runway preference, so I was expecting a straight in 09 landing. I was farther out and quite a bit slower than the Lakesair Beach 1900 declared an approach to 27. This completely messed me up as in my mind, I was landing straight in 09. Still my instructor pilot let me make the approach. I would have not followed the Beach and broken the pattern, if I had been by myself. However my IP thought I should try to land. I was a little behind the plane but not so much my IP though he should take the plane from me. I made the threshold a little fast and little high but more or less okay. It took some help from my instructor pilot to get the plane to stick to runway but I got it down and could use the airplane again. I was shaking afterwards but glad I made the approach and landing.

When they said one of the most "challenging" airports, I knew we were talking about the airport at "ta hell you ride," high, high, high in southwestern Colorado's San Juan Mountains. And for a bit of local color, hop off the plane, go into Telluride and look up at that mountain with the unusual building on it--a Victorian-era hydroelectric plant designed by Thomas Edison!
