Yes, you read that right. Someone was...uh... courageous enough?... to put the APU from an XBOX One S onto a PC motherboard. Meet the AMD A9-9920... but is it any good?
But first... What am I drinking???
Ninkasi Brewiing Sleigh'r Holiday Ale. A super malty and spicy dark ale. If you like ESBs or Irish Reds, this one should be right up your alley. And Rohrbach Brewing's Space Kitty. This New York brew is a 3-hop blend inspired by West Coast IPAs. It's definitely the most 'West Coast' beer I've had from New England... well done!

More like how games are dialed down, forcing computers to be handicapped to allow consoles to reach 30 fps or maybe 60 fps. Last 8 years in gaming has forced computers to play with one hand behind their back, just so they won't out gun consoles. You can play Halo MC edition on a quad core Phenom II. That is pretty sad when you really consider the technology at the release of some of the Halo games.

@@Saintbow games on a console can take advantage of direct hardware programming. meaning that they don't have to work between OS and drivers to get the hardware to do the work, and that leads to a huge performance improvement over a "pc" style computer with hardware interposer drivers with a software OS to deal with. Just going straight to hardware is massive performance gains.

@@Saintbow With respect the PC would still be running Doom / Quake / Unreal rip offs without consoles because PC gaming alone doesn't fund the cost of bigger game title developments such as Grand Theft Auto, Assasins Creed, Watchdog, Fifa, Call of Duty...... There is a reason why most developers prioritise their console versions for release.

If I remember correctly these chips don't use anything from the bulldozer family but 2 clusters of 4 Puma CPU cores modules with the CPUs. Remember the shorted lived FM1 CPUs? Basically those but doubled up. So it's a true 8 core 8 threaded CPU. Otherwise in their typical laptop 4 core chips they were competing with Intel Atom CPUs. It reminds of when Jim Keller joined AMD, he was quoted to have said something along the lines of "Gonna make the best of AMD has to offer" and said article said they might reuse what they can. Then when Zen came out with the CCX modules being a thing it reminded me of the last gen Consoles and their 2 clusters of 4 cpus.

One thing to note, Xbox One uses GDDR 5 (or 4, can't remember) so it will likely be faster than DDR 3, but not THAT much faster. This really is a good example of how games can be optimized for dedicated hardware. RDR2 gets 30 FPS on that APU in an Xbox. Now, just think of what they will be able to do with the new Zen2/RDNA2 chips inside the newest console generation, and what hardware you will need in a PC to keep up in 2 or 3 years.

@ghomerhust
@ghomerhust 3 жыл бұрын
technically, the FX had no APU, that was a different architecture all together, something that the FM platform handled instead of the AM3+ platform. the FX chips, on the later end of the time scale, werent too terrible if you had the cooling to do an overclock. i ran an 8350 at 5.0ghz for almost 7 years straight, and it played most games on high or ultra settings without much issue, though it was sitting at its max of 60-65C the whole time.
@Ghennesph
@Ghennesph 3 жыл бұрын
@@ghomerhust I know for a fact that a 5GHz 8350 would struggle with multiple games at more than 40fps, because on a 4GHz 960T, those games don't scale past 2 cores and struggle to hit even 30fps consistently in some parts. Games that favored K10.5 over Piledriver in performance. Also because I managed to convince someone with a newer, faster architecture from one of the later Athlon FM2 CPUs to do a FPS test in one of the games I knew to perform poorly, that they insisted ran fine, and it ran exactly how I said it would, 40~50, with a scene they conveniently omitted with the excuse of "nothing is going on there so of course it runs fine lol" being guaranteed to drop below 40 on that CPU. And that was far from the worst game for that CPU. That was downright average for that CPU for years. It was pretty dang terrible. The only saving grace was it handled 6+ thread stuff well enough that it could sometimes almost look competitive with the quadcore quadthread Intel CPUs it was released against, and actually priced above, assuming that you ignored 90% of the market at that time, and also ignored the higher power draw that would see most people actually spending more in the long run on the FX than a Core i7 of it's competing generation. It was actually that bad.

Sorry, you're right, it's a cut-down low-power oriented branch of the FX series' microarchitecture. So, not only is it an architecture where a 5ghz 8core struggles, but it's clocked at ~2ghz? Its a big fat question. Since the CPu wasnt designed with high power (Jaguar cores), it might be on its best performance anyway. Whats more of an option to improve is actually the IGP/GPU side, plus its probable the hardware video encoder/decoder is present on the hardware, but the win driver cant address it, since it does not now where to look for it. I bought in 2017 a pre-built PC from Fingerhut, an online catalog company, who sells Cybertron PC's. The pre-built had a terrible PSU that would not give stable power draw to the parts in the PC case. Speaking of which was a Asus motherboard AM3 with a FX 4100 processor, 8GB of 1600Mhz DDR3 single dimm, a Gigabyte 2GB Windforce GPU and a 1TB WD blue hard drive. Let's just say after years of dealing with BSOD and multiple crashes I upgraded him to a Ryzen 3600 processor, Seasonic 750w PSU, 16GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4 memory, Gigabyte B450 Motherboard and a Gigabyte 1660 Super 6GB video card. He has been happy ever since.

First thing I thought is... The one S is very slow and how are you going to find drivers. A modern APU is way faster CPU, plus likely faster GPU. Then I watch a video talking about hardware headaches, driver issues, and how it's ultra slow. Awesome that you got it to kind of work.

This might have been interesting to someone (indie game studio or junior game dev) that wanted to get into game development for the Xbox/PS* but didn't have the money to get an actual dev kit. Although makes you wonder, is there no way to sideload your own games on a regular Xbox/PS? You could install a Unix derivative (PS4/5 uses BSD I believe) and test your Unity or Unreal games on actual, real hardware that is used in the Xbox/PS. I guesstimate that Linux has better driver support for this then Windows, would have been interesting to see. I can hear people say, use a virtual machine or emulator or something, but 1) emulators are not a thing yet for this generation of consoles, and 2) how would you emulate the incredibly slow Jaguar CPU cores and GPU combo in a VM? It is weird however that the motherboard in question has separate memory banks instead of soldered on GDDR* memory that the actual Xbox and PS uses. Makes me wonder if this "custom" APU chip is a lot more conventional that we think.

But...you don't need to specifically allocate ram to the iGPU, it takes however much it needs. The allocation part is only for how much ram it'll reserve even before launching a game, that's what you see in windows, when you have fx. 16GB of ram and it shows up as 15,8GB, 256MB is pre-allocated to the iGPU. When the iGPU needs it, it'll go over those 256MB of pre-allocated ram and start taking more. System ram is system ram, if it needs it, it'll take it regardless. There is no option to "lock" the amount of ram it can take since it's dedicated by windows and the drivers. Unless they somehow fucked over the bios, there's no way they could have locked it to a max ram availability, since it still should take what it needs when it hits the "max" ceiling.

This lesson teaches a very important lesson: driver support! I know that it's not exactly the same apples to apples comparison now, but it's still a reasonable analogy. Back in my day, when the 3Dfx Voodoo 1 released, it was not the most powerful 3D accelerator (spec-wise was equal to the slow S3 Virge at 50Megapixels/second, 50Megatexels/second, twice the RAM bandwidth, and missing the 2D part entirely), but it was demonstrably the fastest, with the best drivers and very good API support. The performance delivered was ranging from twice as fast to eight times as fast (compared to the S3 Virge) in the games that ran on both and infinitely faster in the games that did not support the competition. This is the power of drivers support and if S3 had done a better job, it would have been able to keep at least half as fast as the Voodoo 1 at 512x348.

My one complaint about this video is that the CPU is definitely not bulldozer. It's not comparable to an 8120; it'd be more comparable to two AM1 5150 or 5350 slapped together. The Jaguar architecture relies on "traditional" CPU design and not CMT like bulldozer (and it's various descendants used) Edit: The Cinebench scores aren't too surprising. The IPC of the AM1 platform was about on par with the Q6600, and even that was pushing it. Jaguar was meant to compete moreso with the low-power multicore atom line, maybe especially Avoton

Not really an Apple's for Apple's test was it, most of the hardware,cpu memory are vastly under spec. A pc is jack of all trades and master of a few, but a console is designed from the ground up to do one thing play games.

Ok, I’m going to need a source on that confident claim about the A9-9820 being the Xbone S’s chip. That claim has been thrown around left and right in speculation, but the CU count discrepancy would seem to disprove it. This should probably have an unproven disclaimer on it. I am interested in seeing where you got your graphics drivers though, as I hit a huge roadblock when the driver package provided by the AliExpress seller didn’t include them.

Just because that chinese low volume board/apu is using the standard Intel cooler mounting does not mean you can use any cooler. Since that's a bga CPU and not a normal socket chip, I'd be willing to bet the CPU height from the board is different... Probably why they supplied they're own cooler.
