Great video man. Moving back to Maryland after being gone over 15 years. Can’t wait to show my wife all the bounty of the bay and it’s watersheds

Thank you. The Chesapeake Bay has a vast variety of species to catch. Welcome back to Maryland. Maybe I'll see you on the water.

Nice. I've caught a few traps on my line, but they looked like they were out there for a while. I've even caught half of someone else's trotline that was in the mud for a while.

Great and awesome info bro, I've never seen a topless trap in my life lol. I do have some of the regular ones I plan on using this season in the Marina.

Thanks Desmond. The topless traps work great and take up less space. As you can see, I have a little bit of everything that I've collected over the years. We are allowed to use 30 traps in MD. It's a lot of work, but it's great for the kids.

@@TomyTekOutdoors Great Video! Can you recommend where to purchase the topless traps?
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
NJ@@bushwp11 you can buy them online here captainbcs.com/crab-traps. I've purchased from Capt Bruce before. You can go to Bay Country Crabbing Supply in Edgewater or Anglers in Annapolis if you want to see them in person. You can also get them from Amazon amzn.to/2VfS6qw. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Thanks man. I appreciate that. I'll be doing more crabbing this year since the surveys are saying the population is up. Let me know if you would be up for running a trotline from my canoe or boat. I'm still trying to work out the kinks of running it from my boat. It's a little more challenging than from my old boat.

Hi, what’s your best recommendations for bait? Any pluses or minuses to the options?
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Chicken necks are the easiest and the cheaper option. This is what I mostly use. You can use other pieces of chicken, but it will cost a little more. The best option that I have used are razor clams, but they cost a bit more than chicken necks. Other options are bull lips, salted eel and bunker or any local fish. I'll be experimenting with different bait this year.

I have a ring trap I made that's 30 in around and I was wondering could I use that in Maryland.?
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Here is what is published in the Maryland guide to fishing and crabbing for 2019 "Net rings must have a diameter less than or equal to 30 inches." It's listed on page 40 of the guide. According to this, it sounds like it would be legal to use them. That's pretty awesome that you made them. The cheapest 30 inch ring trap I could find online is $33. The ones I use in this video are 18 inches in diameter.

@@TomyTekOutdoors I am looking for a crabbing location it's my first time I made the Trap the Rings. And a place that doesn't have a lot of crime and a good printer for supply of crabs from the bank

@@memberson I did a quick google search and found this www.baltimoresun.com/travel/bal-tr-crabbing-spots-list-story.html. I have personally crabbed from Point Lookout, Solomons Island, Matapeake State Park, Romancoke Pier, and Bill Burton Fishing Pier State Park. Another good location not mentioned is Sandy Point State Park. It can get crowded, so I would go there early. Crabbing can be hit or miss right now. I tried Matapeake last week and caught nothing. I may still post footage of this trip. I'll give it another go in a few weeks. Check the tide tables and make sure you are crabbing during a running tide. You need current moving for the scent of your bait to move around. Good luck.

When stacking the top less traps I would recommend hanging the float on the corner post of the trap hanging out. Alternate sides to allow room for the float, leaving 2 posts empty so they can be laid down still. Placing the next trap on will lock that float in place. Will save a ton of room with those floats out of the traps allowing you to stack more traps in same amount of space.
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jared. That will save a lot of space. I haven't used traps in a while, but now that the kids are more interested, I had to break them out. I hoping to get it a go soon. Do you run a trotline from your kayak?
@jnogle6
@jnogle6 5 жыл бұрын
@@TomyTekOutdoors never crabed from the yak only boats. I have topless galzanized traps have had them for 8+ years now and still look brand new. Key is to rinse off your gear with fresh water after every trip.( that saltwater is rough on gear) Havent even had to replace a single line. And they have gotten a ton of use. Also for new crabbers who dont have the benifit of a depth finder. Its a good ide to make sure your main float is strong enough to float your trap if placed in too deep of water. To test just wrap it up and toss in shallow water should float. Im really liking these crabbing videos. Keep up the good work.

Also when using the ring traps, attach a small cork float where the 4 lines meet. This will keep the three lines from laying on your trap and the crab from standing on it and going flying when you pull the line. Only on a very slow or slack tide will this occur because the tide will pull the main line enough to keep the strings up. But every crab counts on a slow day. Give it a try. Test it in shallow clear water and see for yourself.
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
I used to do that, but lost a few to a strong tide. It probably would not have happened if I added a heavier sinker. I'll try both with and without to see what works for best. I've found that if you adjust your main line according to the depth, it help float the three lines as well. I'll get some underwater footage to see what it looks like.

In Maryland, your traps have to be identifiable with your DNR ID, unless attached to a pier, wharf, or boat.

Are you allowed 30 of these traps without a license? How long do you leave before checking.
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
A license is required to run traps in Maryland. Here's a link to maryland crabbing regulations www.eregulations.com/maryland/fishing/blue-crabs-chesapeake-bay/. I check traps as soon as I drop the last one. If it's slow, I might wait up to 10 minutes between runs. If it's still slow, I would start moving some of them at that point.

How do you know when to pull the trap up
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
I just drop all of my traps and then pull them after I have dropped all of them. Then I'll let them sit for 5-10 mins and pull them again. If I notice I am catching a lot, I'll pull more often.
