In this video, I show how I like to setup my ring traps for crabbing. Ring traps are cost effective and take up minimal space. They are great for kayak crabbing, but can be used anywhere from a dock, pier, boat, and shore. Stayed tune as I will be making a video showing bait holders I like to use in my traps.

I remember years ago my Dad telling me a story about when he was a kid going crabbin' with his Dad (my grandfather) to Broad Channel (in Queens NY).. a time when blue claws were soo plentiful... they would rent a row boat for $5 and just glide along the shallows and scoop them up off the bottom with long handled nets (always throwing back the females eggs or not).. throwing the 'Jimmies' into the boat and going back for more.. taking the LIRR train ride back to Astoria NY (home) with bushel bags filled with 'sidewalkers' ..#GOODTIMES!!

That's awesome. Thank you for sharing that memory. In Maryland, recreational crabbers can't keep females and commercial crabbers have a quota. There's nothing liking fresh blue crabs you caught yourself. It must have been a sight to see someone with a bushel of crabs on the train 😀

@@TomyTekOutdoors not 'bushels' .. they filled those old potato burlap sacks! Given out to their friends / neighbors with plenty left for their own consumption ;)

I'm almost there. I'm planning to run a short trotline and a couple of traps on my first trip. The surveys show the population is up this year. I hope it's gonna be a good season.

What kind of floats would you recommend for the ring nets to keep strings off of bait? Thanks
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
A fishing bobber should work. Something similar to this amzn.to/3MA1z3l. I used 1 inch bobbers, but I never really checked to see if they did actually float the line. They did catch crabs though. I'll have to check it in shallow water. I'll make a follow up video show this.

how do you stack them to save space in the boat? The bottom trap seems to just lay open and take up too much room. Thanks!

I use a bungee around the bottom trap to keep the doors closed.

Do you have any suggestions on how to keep your traps from drifting? I added weight to the trap and it is still drifting.
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Weight would have been my first suggestion. You should also make sure your have enough line, for the depth of water you are crabbing. If the tide is really ripping, there's not much you could do. That would be the advantage of metal traps. I hope you had a great season. Thanks for watching.

Great video..do you prefer the cloth or wire ring traps
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Both work, but crabs have a harder time walking out of the cloth traps. I've seen too many big crabs walk right out of the wire ones as I'm pulling it over the side.

No disrespect meant. But those ring nets are cheap. That cloth net rots from the salt water. I make my own. I can take you to Alan's ring net building school. If you want? Lol

None taken. Someone asked me how to rig them, so I made this video. Some people don't have to budget to buy a bunch of traps, so cloth ring nets are good to start with. I prefer topless traps myself. I would love to see how you make ring nets. I could even film the process if you don't mind sharing it with everyone.

why waste a swivel on the sinker when its alot easier to just use a small zip tie, you are doing way too much for a simple ring net.
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
That is true. I bought these swivels in bulk fairly cheap, so I used them.
