We went crabbing on the Newport Pier in Newport, Oregon in search of some BIG off-season Dungeness crab. We found some and had a great morning on the bay in true Northwest Weekenders fashion.
At the end of the video, Kailey demonstrates how to clean a crab using the "Crack'n Crab Cleaner."
We do not own the music in this video.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I was able to go crabbing for the first time tonight and I was confident through it all thanks to this very well made video! I caught one red rock crab within the small amount of time I was there. I cannot wait to catch more!

That's so awesome to hear! You'll definitely catch more. Keep at it. And in our experience crabbing is best from August to January but we catch them year around. We just find them more abundant and hard shelled (full of meat) during those months.

FYI next time you go get fish-heads from one of the charter boats there. Waaaaaaay better bait. Cheaper too. If you had fish heads you have been pulling full pots every time. I used to crab there all the time and even caught a Cabazon in one of my pots with fish heads

Wow! That's awesome! We started using rock fish, shad, and salmon carcass the last few years and enjoy the variety. Chicken and Trout have always done pretty well for us over the years, so sometimes we just roll with what's in our freezer at home.

Great video and catch. I love your wife and how easy it is to pick and measure the crabs, most girls get silly about it. She is amazing; well done.

It's a blast! If you go from the pier during the season, you're bound to have a good haul. This was in July, but we still managed some nice crab.

Oh my what a banger of a video, first time here and am impressed, you kept the banger's all throughout the vid not bad, subbed! I'm about to take the folks to crab snaring in november in Pacifica, hopefully we catch as much as you guys. Oof rip on the insides of the crab, thats the best part of the crab lol. Especially when they are female.

12 Dungeness (Male only- must be a minimum of 5 and 3/4 inch), 24 Red Rock (any sex, no size requirement), and you'll also find some green crab or kelp crab from time to time.

Never throw a pot until the rope is secured to the rail.
@northwestweekenders
@northwestweekenders 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. That's sound advice. We tend to have one of us hold the buoy because we like to throw our pots at different distances and depths from pull to pull and don't like to have too much excess rope or too little. But I (Danny) did learn that the hard way last summer on a solo crabbing trip because I lost a ring off the pier having not tied it off. Smh 😔
@erniekropf665
@erniekropf665 Жыл бұрын
@@northwestweekenders just tie the very end of the rope to the rail, through the pot and let the extra rope hang over the rail or on the dock. It will be ok and you will not loose your crab pot.

They can certainly be intimidating and can really do some damage if they manage to pinch you hard enough. We've been pinched a few times each in the past but luckily they didn't latch on too well- that's a good way to lose a finger. There are ways of handling crab that we've learned that don't allow them an opportunity to pinch you no matter how hard they try. I would still recommended wearing gloves, although I (Danny) go bare handed on the majority of our trips and it's become 2nd nature. When I was a kid, my dad used to do 99% of the handing until I was comfortable enough to do so myself.

Awesome! is there a best time of year? We are on South Coast Texas
@northwestweekenders
@northwestweekenders 2 жыл бұрын
The best time is definitely September- December, although we do well in July and August, and January too. The only difference in Feb-June is that the crab are molting and may have big shells but they are not packed with meat. When we go in the off-season we are just pickier and tend to still catch a fair amount of crab but just keep the hard shelled ones that have lots of meat.

Can you eat the whole crab?I'm in maryland and we have blue crabs and you can eat the whole crab.when i see Dungeness crabs i only see people eating the claws.
@northwestweekenders
@northwestweekenders 2 жыл бұрын
You can certainly eat the whole crab. The legs and claws of Dungeness crab are great eating and will have lots of meat if they are hard shelled (meaning they have been in their shell for a longer period and are filling up with meat). We try to only keep the hard shell crab because if not, the crab may look huge and have a giant shell but there won't be much meat besides the claws. Some people eat the insides of the crab (known as crab butter) as well but I would say the majority of people enjoy the legs and claws. For Red Rock Crab on the other hand, the claws are really your only source to harvest any decent amount of meat. Since Red Rock are invasive species, many people catch them and harvest the claws and either throw them back or dispose of them. People often say that Red Rock are much sweeter than Dungeness but not as rich or buttery in flavor.

We really want to go! We've been invited out a few times in the past but it hasn't worked out unfortunately. We will probably take a charter out of Newport this summer though. We are trying to step up our game from the usual species we catch but time is our biggest challenge as we've had a lot of new opportunities and challenges in our lives this year.
