Dungeness Crab Limits (Massive) | Boat Crabbing | Newport, Oregon | Yaquina Bay | Truck Full of Crab

In mid-July of 2021, we rented a boat from South Beach Marina in Newport, Oregon and absolutely killed it in Yaquina Bay. We caught our limits of big, beautiful Dungeness Crab and some Red Rock as well.

What brand of traps are you using and what size diameter rope and length

Catch and cook that's what I want to see because I can't catch those , we stuck with blue crab and they're not even close to Dungeness, maybe one day I'll be able to come down there and catch me some

What was the depth along that NOAA pier? You weren't in the channel, were you?

No. We were Iust right inside the channel. Not sure what depth but I'd guess around 50 to 60 feet.

Pretty deep for crab traps! I hope I have enough line on my traps and rings! My wife and I are going over on the 19th (from Eugene) and rent a boat from the marina store, too. Never crabbed from a small skiff before and wasn't sure about exactly where to go to get the most out of our 3 hour rental. Looks like you found a good spot, though! Nice and near the marina, too. @@barry1170 of course! You'll be fine. We run 100 foot rope to account for the current (on strong days). The crabbing is good up further closer to the river where it's much more shallow near the water tower and also closer inland near the NOAA boats. Good luck to you!

The crab use the big doors to get in and then the escape hole is made to only allow smaller crab out.

They can turn themselves right way up as they float to the bottom. They have the ability to swim a little so they are able to maneuver pretty well.

😆 We have my dad to thank for that. He's been taking me (Danny) out since I was a little kid. We'll go with anyone who wants to go. The more the merrier. We would love to meet up and crab the Newport Pier. Boat gets tricky with more than a few people.

How much for boat rental

Last we went it was $70 for 4 hours I think and $120 for 8 hours. Out of South Beach Marina and Yaquina Bay Charters.

Now $110 for 3 hours, but includes 3 rings (not pots), bucket, life jackets, boat, and fuel. If you return to the dock more than 10 minutes late, they charge another $40.@@northwestweekenders

That's debatable! 😆 But we sure do give out a lot of fish and crab to friends, family, and clients. We get as much joy out of that as anything. We really want to give lobsters a try and different kinds of crab! Someday soon hopefully.

@@goatinaround4948 yea we backed them prior and probably like 12-15 mins. We made them in a crab boil with potatoes, corn and sausage so maybe that had something to do with it too.

The season doesn't even open until December at the soonest.

Commercially, yes. Recreational crabbing is open year-round, and we have our best luck September- November. With that said, we've caught limits all throughout the year.
