Sadly, Norman Fondren passed away while on Skid Row this spring.

I didn't meet Norman but I found him unforgettable. His death was so unexpected. Or it felt that way because it seemed like he was getting a handle on his addiction. He was so honest and raw. Sharing himself like that ... I know it sounds crazy but it felt like losing a friend. Maybe you know what I mean but sometimes your channel and the people you interview, they endear themselves to us viewers. Norman was one of those. 💓🙏

@Phil Lashio That's a valid comment. I suppose it was his open honesty about his addictions and failures, something about the appeared honesty of his story i appreciated. He didn't seem delusional, said he was college educated but you're right, he may just be a good story teller. Highly intelligent may be an overstatement.

Yes, the most powerful addiction testimony ever! I cannot imagine a more succinct, eloquent, brutally honest, and profound testimony than that. This is one that will stay with me. I don't think i will ever forget it. This should be shown in schools worldwide. Norman's testimony is so powerful, that it could save lives. Just as he remembers seeing that program on the homeless all those years ago, i believe that his testimony would stay with many children and they would never forget it. And be able to remember it when it matters the most - to not ever take that first hit! He's brilliant, obviously. And his potential is endless. I hope and pray so much that Norman makes it out! Because he would be able to truly change lives. And accomplish whatever he sets his mind to do. He would make an excellent public speaker! And be able to make a difference, by traveling around and speaking to different organizations. What an asset to the community he could be!! God bless u Norman. 💕💕

@Nino Brown in what way?
@joulaikabuchan4 жыл бұрын
@Nino Brown Am a clinical social worker. In the past I managed a recovery home for women with Substance Use issues and concurrent disorders. The problem is never the drug. The problem is the trauma and they way people cope with it. The drug on the other hand escalates and creates even MORE trauma which becomes perpetual and the person is in this never ending cycle (unless there is a moment of clarity). Childhood trauma is 99.9% in the history of most addicts. Norman was lost at 12, he had emotions as well as developmental needs and his ONE person he trusted with his life and existence was gone. He was able to be the best in school because these where practical things, he can manage that but emotionally he was stunned by grief and the sexual assault - this is why he has a hard time managing his emotions...playing the tape all the way through. He is smart, he knows ...he will get there.

Thank you. it's nice that people want to help so much but it's terrifying to read some of the comments on these videos of mainly women, offering to open their homes to complete strangers on the internet. I wouldn't be surprised if these were single women with small kids. that's not to say addicts and thieves don't deserve compassion, but most will admit themselves that when addiction takes over, they'll do anything to get their DOC. They need help in other ways.

I've seen so many interviews on this channel but this one is a wake up slap in the face. Maaan...if this interview doesn't show what the effects of trauma and abuse does, nothing will. His issue isn't the crack, it is his unresolved trauma and abuse that makes the crack look so appealing. It helps him 'forget' about what has happened to him. I mean, of course crack is his issue but I mean his 'why' is more important. Damnn..to hear about all the things he lost. A smart educated man with all the things people want to have in life, just broken and on skid row. I look forward to watching his other videos. This man said something that hit home with me, It was what his grandma told him , "if you get with those people you will be like those people, and the only way is down." That statement I needed to hear. Thank you for doing this interview I hope people learn from this and I hope you find yourself and heal. God loves you call on him my friend. You will be in my prayers.

I just watched the follow up video. I also almost immediately watched a cover for the sound of silence. Between this interview and that song, I’m a mess. Addiction can be so silent among those struggling and those on the outskirts looking into. I’m so moved by your soul and willpower. Keep going hun. You deserve to live life and share your wealth of knowledge and soul.

So much sadness and guilt. His talents and the advantages he had didn't cut it for him, because all he wanted was something to numb that pain. WTF makes adults want to harm children? So many lives are ruined by abuse.

I just celebrated ten years of sobriety. The farther I walk on this journey the more humbled I am. This disease is spiritual in nature and it doesn’t rest until we and everything around us is destroyed. I send you love, Norman. Love and prayers. Trauma. The fucking gift that keeps on giving...

This man needs a case study. I think he should volunteer himself to any new research for addiction and recovery, because the other 50 something have failed. He's clearly smart, he clearly has a switch that says "go back to the rock"; self-destruct. It's easy to blame the sexual abuse, or death of his mother, etc...but we really just dont know. How many successful, well-off people, who've had the same things happen and go on to lead normal, healthy lives...how many of those people do we hear about? We don't. Someone in addiction research needs to find this man and find out how to ELIMINATE THE DESIRE, not just continually live life by suppressing that desire. Norman, please do yourself a favor, and get help from in a research institute who is interested in your case. I'm sure you could do something for the world since you're so articulate, you could greatly benefit researchers and scientists who need accurate feedback from experimental treatments. #CASESTUDYNORMAN

You can't eliminate the desire. That's why they say when you're ready. You'll know. You have to have the desire and still say no. Ask any ex user now and they'll still tell you. It was amazing. They still know how good it feels.

Best interview in this channel. He is not only articulate but so self aware. A lot to learn from him. You have had some incredible people on this channel but this interview really gives so much insight into an addicts life and mind. He doesn't excuse himself from anything. Norman, society needs you sir. You did it, now it's time to move on into something else. We are here and have been waiting for you. No time to waste. We are here supporting you.

So intelligent with so much to offer! As a person that struggled with addiction for almost 25yrs, primarily with heroin/fentanyl & crack cocaine, I know personally recovery is possible! It takes alot of motivation, hard work & dedication.....all of which are so hard especially in early recovery. The first year is probably the hardest personal battle any individual can go through & support is necessary.
