CRACKBABY Searun Cutthroat Fly

Fly-tying tutorial for the Crackbaby searun cutthroat fly. This pattern is killer for trout and other anadromous fish throughout the PNW.
Materials used in this video:
HOOK: TMC 200R, size 6
BEAD: Firehole 5/32” tungsten
LEGS: Hareline barred rubber legs
HACKLE: Hot-orange saddle
BODY: Lagartun shrimp pink flat-braid
RIB: Silver wire, counter-wrapped
TAIL: Hot-orange saddle fibers
THREAD: Veevis 50D, white

This is a very versatile fly pattern! I love it! For saltwater and/or steelhead I use a #4 stainless hook and vary the colors to fit the river and species. Just today (Sept) I hooked two steelhead in my local river using an orange and black variation (Pumpkin Spice Crackbaby). I love streamers that are easy to cast but look big in the water with lots of action and this is one of them.

i live in philomath and consider the alsea like my back yard river since its such a short drive for me so ill definitely have to tie this fly and give it a shot!

Have you tried this fly in any other colors? Have you tried it for sea runs in the saltwater off the beach? Love this fly, tying some up for me and a buddy. thanks for sharing.

@@barrystokes358 Oh yeah, I’ve tied it in a variety of colors, but nine times out of ten I use this shrimp pink version. I’ve never fished for SRCs in the salt though. Let us know how you do, and thanks for posting!

Looks kinda like a mutant kebari on steroids… I like it! I wonder if a scaled down version would work on the rainbows in my local streams.

Hey, nice fly. What do you reckon this fly imitates? I used to catch sea-run cutthroat in the 80's in the Cowlitz on a small Royal Coachman. I don't think it mimicked anything but it worked. You think this fly mimicks anything?

Thanks. I don't think it mimics anything specific at all. Just like the Royal Coachman, it's just an attractor pattern that I think really get's the SRC's attention and triggers their predatory response.

do you fish this on a sink tip line? i normally fish my reverse spiders only on a floating but curious to what you do

I often use a 5' fast sinking polyleader with a couple of feet of flouro tippet. Really depends on where you're fishing though i.e. I like to get down deep under some of those overhanging shelves and cover where the SRCs lurk.

Are the barred rubber legs round or flat, medium or small? Thank you kindly

Flat-medium. I tried the size small, but they're too limp and don't seem to have as much movement. The mediums are also more durable.

Have you tried to tie it in reverse, i.e the head with the rubber legs and bead facing the bend of the hook instead of the eye, like a “traditional” Scandinavian shrimp pattern?
