Good video! I lived in Newport for a long time. Not sure but I think that might be a Cabazon instead of a ling cod
@catlauncher7 күн бұрын
Thanks. And yeah, sometimes those cabezon will have a similar blueish phase too, but this is definitely a lingcod.

do you fish this on a sink tip line? i normally fish my reverse spiders only on a floating but curious to what you do
@catlauncher18 күн бұрын
I often use a 5' fast sinking polyleader with a couple of feet of flouro tippet. Really depends on where you're fishing though i.e. I like to get down deep under some of those overhanging shelves and cover where the SRCs lurk.

@catlauncherАй бұрын
Flat-medium. I tried the size small, but they're too limp and don't seem to have as much movement. The mediums are also more durable.
@SiuslawORАй бұрын
Have you tried to tie it in reverse, i.e the head with the rubber legs and bead facing the bend of the hook instead of the eye, like a “traditional” Scandinavian shrimp pattern?

Hey, nice fly. What do you reckon this fly imitates? I used to catch sea-run cutthroat in the 80's in the Cowlitz on a small Royal Coachman. I don't think it mimicked anything but it worked. You think this fly mimicks anything?
@catlauncher7 ай бұрын
Thanks. I don't think it mimics anything specific at all. Just like the Royal Coachman, it's just an attractor pattern that I think really get's the SRC's attention and triggers their predatory response.

This is a very versatile fly pattern! I love it! For saltwater and/or steelhead I use a #4 stainless hook and vary the colors to fit the river and species. Just today (Sept) I hooked two steelhead in my local river using an orange and black variation (Pumpkin Spice Crackbaby). I love streamers that are easy to cast but look big in the water with lots of action and this is one of them.

Does your chasing of sea run cutts depend on the time of year?
@catlauncher9 ай бұрын
Great question. The short answer is "yes". But, it seems to have changed over the years. Used to be only a late Aug-early Oct fishery. Then for several years the runs seems to come a lot earlier e.g. early July. The past couple of years though they seem to run late, and I haven't really had good success until well into Sept. In short, SRCs are fickle, and will show up in coastal rivers sometime between July and Sept, depending on their mood, and whatever other conditions I still can't figure out. I'll keep chasing them though.

Do you have any info on fly materials. Looking to tie these up
@catlauncher9 ай бұрын
Your comment has inspired me to finally get off my rear and make a tutorial video. ;-) Until then… the fly (“Crackbaby“) is tied using a tungsten bead with six white & black flaked rubber legs right behind it. Then a hot orange hackle behind the legs. Body is shrimp flat braid coated with UV resin. Tail is hot orange hackle fibers. I tie it backwards i.e. after tying in the tail first, I then work backwards from the front and whip-finish right at the tail. Hope that helps!

What weight rod do you use for SRC's? I run my 3# and have caught some big ones, a 19" and a 21". I'm guessing you run big rod in case you get a Jack or steelhead.
@catlauncher9 ай бұрын
I generally cast a 5wt, but that also has to do with the fact that I‘m casting a tungsten bead-head fly on a fairly aggressive streamer line and a polyleader. That said, my last time out I took a 6 and 7 wt because, as you said… salmon! ;-)

Thanks for the wonderful video. It looks like you guys had a fantastic time. The weather gods apparently also showed you some mercy. Great to see you two had the good fortune to hook up with Lesly (0:44). He doesn't just guide those rivers, he lives them. Above all, he is really capable of getting you on the Soča away from the crowds, but also off the Soča and onto the many of the smaller tributaries that are so often overlooked and an absolute kick in the pants to fish and just plain enjoy for the wonderful nature of them. I have rarely seen that much passion in a guide, nor have I had that much fun fishing on a river with someone who was not a life-long fishing buddy. Hope to make it down to the Soča Valley again soon.

Glad that helped, and thanks for the feedback! One thing to keep in mind as of today (8-29), the searun cutties seem to be coming in a bit later compared to years past. Not sure when in Sept. you’re planning, but the later the better, in my opinion. Last year’s run was late too, but by mid-Sept. it was excellent. Post back and let me know how it goes. ;-)

@catlauncher Жыл бұрын
@@sunsationalfan13 It’ll still be worth fishing. Plenty of resident cutties around, even if the SRCs aren’t in in big numbers yet. Those that are should be spread throughout the river, so you just gotta hunt for them. I never spend a lot of time in one spot. Bottom line: sounds like you’ll still be in a decent window to chase trout on the Alsea.

How does it work in Slovenia with fishing licenses? And to fish in the soca river is it necessarily to fly fish or will fishing with a spinning rod work too?
@catlauncher2 жыл бұрын
The fishing license process is very different from where I'm at in the U.S. Basically, different "clubs" manage different streams & rivers, so I had to get a license for the specific sections we fished. Our guide, Lesly Janssen at www.slo-fly.com/ got us all set up with that. I'm not sure about the spinning rod question. Everywhere we fished was fly-fishing only. Hope that help!

Beautiful!!! What kind of fly do you use for these stalking tactics, then? Perdigons?
@catlauncher2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We used a variety of very small nymphs that our guide tied, and we swapped them out often. If one or two patterns wouldn't work, a third in a different color and profile would sometimes finally get the fish to strike. Always learning. ;-)
