My long ago deceased neighbor worked on these for Illinois Central RR in East St. Louis Illinois, and he said these EMD engines were the best and easiest ones to repair. He started out working on steam locomotives in Roodhouse Illinois. He was a great neighbor, and we all miss he and his wife.

So 4 valves per head. But multiple springs and rockers. What are they for? Is it variable valve timing?

Dad is 91 and still practicing law part time. My grandfather was a prosecutor and judge in northeast Ohio. He passed in '69. First in our family on dads side born here. I travelled nine states working on industrial and institutional HVAC and process equipment -- and ran rescue, fought fire, ran squad, and occasionally flew with medical helicopters to unwind after dealing with architects and engineers. My wife joined squad and fire so we could spend more time together. We traveled to EMS seminars together whenever we could. Never stop learning! It keeps you going. Maybe like an old steamer leaking at the rivets and in need of new grates (I still have stoker parts in stock), but still building steam!! Blessings ----

Growing up we had a John Deere "A" and an "H" and our next door neighbor had a "G" and 2 "LA's" and they all got lot of working done. Our "A" was a 1939 styled front and the "H" was a '46 if I remember right. We never had to rebuild the engines although we did rebuild the hydraulics in the "A" and used quick connects to it to power a log splitter we built ourselves. Worked great. We'd have the A just idling all day while we split and stacked stove wood. We used the little H for gardening...plowing, discing, harrowing, etc. and used the A for mowing, bushhogging, raking, baling, stump pulling and wood splitting. I've seen engines on similar ones torn down though and you're right, they do have some darn big pistons in them :) Both of ours had electric starters, but the battery on the A was almost always dead so we (meaning me) always got the job of hand cranking it by spinning that big flywheel with the petcock valves open.

I've changed 100 power packs out on EMDs, and I've never separated the piston from the piston carrier. We always pulled the injector, ran an eyelet down into the top of the piston, and pulled the whole power pack at once. I would never mix a new piston on a used carrier without mic'ing everything out first. Less time to pull the whole power pack too.

Lot of the old river tug boats here have them, good reliable engines. I used to work on a tug way back in the 1970's for a brief stint. I worked on 645E4 EMD engines mostly in stationary generator units. We had to replace power assemblies in pieces because there wasn't enough headroom to pull the complete assembly. The first piston snap ring I removed took me about 4 hours. After a couple hundred, it took about 30 seconds! I stopped doing that work in 1992. I worked several times at the Cumberland mine where this video was done. They have newer locomotives now.

38 yrs tug engineer. I love EMD's , 567's , 645's. On a tug there are lifting points, padd eyes, etc. to hang a chain hoist from. No problem taking the engine apart. Easy to run and easy to fix! We left the Clinton Point quarey with 16 loaded stone scows. There were two cylinders with cracked heads on the stbd engine. I couldn't keep a level in the expansion tank, so I removed the relief valves, on those two and when Capt Bob needed both engines, I started it up on 14 cylinders, with flames shooting out the side of the engine , just to get around West Point, and Bear Mt. . On the next trip the Co. put one of the smaller boats to act as our stbd Engine. We ran two more days like that untill The Frank Barker III could come in and be fixed. We used to call Barker, 'Good enough towing'! I ran with more problems, and when they did a temporary repair, they would say that's good enough. One of the capts. had hats made up with "good Enough towing on them, I used to wear mine in the yard, but nothing was ever said.

Loved you comment George! The way I understand it there is a difference between the EMD loco engines and the marine engines but i don't know that it is. Perfect, Good Enough Towing!!! @@ccrx6700 Some of the differences are; the marine engines have a deeper oil pan, exhaust temperature thermocouples in the exhaust risers, the turbos have a proven to add a extra idler gear for right hand engines to use at low power, the acessary covers on the front are different for left and right hand engines. Since most engines are built to ABS ( American Bureau of Standards - for insurance standards, the crankshafts have to be marked by the ABS Maltese cross ( extra $200) but other wise the same. The instrument gage panel is more comprehensive. The use air starter motors and my favorite item,springloaded fuel injector links where you can essentially add more fuel one cylinder to hear if the cylinder is firing properly.That would have just the thing to do in this case to find the weak cylinder in a couple of cylinders.

I love the insides of two - stroke engines. I worked with the 710 engine. Started with mechanical injectors like you showed then EMD went electronic fuel injection (EMDEC). Good old American know how. Thank you for getting the internal camera shots. It please us mechanical nerds :)

I would think with traditional valves that its' a 4 stroke engine.

@@DrHarryT you can see the intake ports in cylinder side. EMD two stroke engines have intake ports with 4 exhaust poppet valves.
@DrHarryT
@DrHarryT Жыл бұрын
@@billtimmons7071 I see the rectangular notches now, when I first saw it I thought that is was reflections. The piston must be at mid travel because the piston would still travel down to suck in air. I suspect then all 4 valves open at the same time some period after combustion but close before the piston gets to the intake notches. It would seem with this design you get less than a 1/2 of a stroke for power. Then again on a motorcycle it's about the same. I also saw the bottom of the piston and didn't see a traditional connecting rod wrist pin. I suspect the wrist pin is part of the rod assembly with a round pad at the top which fits into that circle on the bottom of the piston and is held in by a snap ring. I'm a 40 year veteran automotive mechanic and I have never seen or knew about this design. I would like to see an animation of it in operation.
@billtimmons7071
@billtimmons7071 Жыл бұрын
@@DrHarryT EMD’s competitor GE used 4 stroke. They both had about the same displacement and similar HP. You would expect the two stroker to have higher HP for similar size but it’s not the case. Two stroke EMD engine has lower equivalent compression stroke because of intake ports. EMD also had problems with emissions with two stroke design. I love the EMD design but two strokes has hit their limits and four stroke is better for todays medium speed diesel engines. I heard that the opposed piston two stroke design is making a come back and can meet emission standards.

At 2:37..."since 1966 probably...", in '66/'67 I served on a WW2 LST (Landing Ship, Tank) "way down yonder in Viet Nam", we had two EMD 567 V-12s, 900 hp @ 744 rpm. That was back in the "Golden Age" of hot rodding and drag racing, I used to enjoy telling the "lifer" engine men about the power that was being pulled out of the new big Detroit iron at that time, they were amazed...the noise in that little engine room while underway was off the meter...

Hi Dave, Absolutely Amazing video! Definitely brings me nostalgia. I actually had owned one of those monsters. Had the compression rings, connecting rod and bearing retainers/bolts. Fresh from a Norfolk Southern SD40-2. My wife bought it from EBAY as a Christmas gift a few years ago. My gosh that thing was something else, I cleaned it up and stood it upright against the wall in the corner of the room where it made an excellent little nightstand 😊. Now the sad part is I no longer have it as we hit serious hardship a couple years ago and it sadly went with a locker it was in 😢. I’ve been searching for a piston assembly like that since but no luck. Railroad stuff does make an excellent collection and hobby. Once again thank you so very much for the videos that you share. You are a favorite of mine and have my support 100%! Keep up the phenomenal work.

It's over my head, but still awesome to see! Biggest piston I saw was for a huge John Deere farm tractor that had two pistons. Outside a car piston, that thing was HUGE! Dad called the tractor a corn popper, lol! But you could hear it quite a ways away! He did a lot of work on it for the neighbor farmer down the road and round the bend to get it running again. You could always hear the farmer plow with it. All the sounds of dairy farms long gone from there now. How much more the sounds of the train engines I hear now! Those engines work hard, and the mechanics that work on those big guys must keep busy to keep trains chugging along. Hats off to them! Many thanks for giving a look at these mysterious marvels. Lol!
