A great day at the mine. We don't get fossils of this gem ammolite quality every day.

@Dank Dank But it’s an opalized ammonite, and a freaking HUGE, amazingly (formerly) intact one at that. All these factors together makes that an extraordinarily rare find, to be clear, and it’s just a shame to know this ancient gem/fossil took hundreds of millions of years in just the right circumstances to form, and then it was hacked up by some amateurs with a water bottle and a chisel in a couple minutes.

When I was a kid, back in the early 70s my dad taught at Purdue, and one of the classes he taught was geology. He used to take his class to the Indiana strip mines, and I got to go with him and hunt for fossils. I never got a lovely fossil of this size, but I have a huge box of ferns of all sorts. Some so well defined that you can see the veins in the plant. I got lots of geodes too, as well as finding huge boulders of crystal that I took pieces off of. This ammolite is beautiful though. I live in Florida now, and most of what we get here are fossil shells, and lots of shark teeth.

@lindataylor21316 жыл бұрын
Shoo..yep. There are a great many which are found at various places around the world. We have some in record that are about this size and which have been broken cleanly. Some fossils break clean, and others fragment like this. Most are not cut in a lab or a shop with a saw. Most are broken. Just like this. All geologists who go looking for samples carry a geohammer. It has a flat head on one side and a pick on the other. They are used to break rock. Like it or not this is the way it's done. Oh and by the way....just cause you see a huge round rock in the ground that doesn't mean there is a single thing inside it. All the blanks I've found over the years......you wouldn't believe. I even have one sitting on my desk right now. An unopened possible fossil. It's most likely another fern, which is what I collected when I was younger....hey I like plants alright....lol....but there is no guarantee there is anything at all in there. I wouldn't know till I opened it, but why open it. I have a huge box of opened fern fossils. So I keep it as a reminder that geology is full of mystery. ::shrugging::
