This is basically my story; People who can't play think I rock at guitar but I know damn well I shouldn't try to participate in a guitar competition cause I'd be smashed. Your channel motivates me to practice in a more systematic and scientific way though, and I'm feeling the desire to finally reach the level I think I should be at

About Alice in Chains: "There weren't big choruses and not many solos." Spoken over a song (Man in the Box) with huge choruses and a kick-ass solo. Heh.

Debates about categorizing their music aside, there is a video floating around of an early AIC club show where their appearance is styled pretty much like a Poison cover band.

@troygrady

It's true, they were / are a classic band. I'm basically mocking myself in that scene for not really 'getting' the power of what I was watching. Not sure if that comes across clearly in the episode but that's the subtext!
@1310an
@1310an 10 жыл бұрын
***** I thought as much. The late Jani Lane said he knew the age of hair metal was over when he was in a meeting with Columbia Records and saw Warrant posters replaced with AiC. On a separate matter, do you cover the styles and techniques of the artists featured in this series in a lesson format (i.e. Masters of Mechanics?)
@troygrady
@troygrady 10 жыл бұрын
I saw that Behind the Music! Season 2 is where we get technical on the actual mechanics of these different players. We just released S2E2 where we completes the Yngwie style. The Season Pass is a pile of technical downloads - slow motion clips and tab. But the episodes themselves are powerfully analytical. Depends how deep you want to go.

This brought back memories. I saw Extreme for the first time at Sundance on Long Island. Same tour (Sept 1990) with AIC opening up, and I remember having the same reaction. I was also at the Spit guitar contest, and if memory serves me, I knew "Mr. Handsome". I think his name was Matt and he used to take guitar lessons right after me so I would be walking out when he was walking in. In fact, I think Matt's band went on before AIC at the Sundance show. Our guitar teacher was none other than John Petrucci.

Your description of Yale had me in stitches laughing! That was my EXACT experience as well (TC'92). I played rock/blues guitar as did nearly EVERYONE at my High School. During my senior year, students at my school had two pop/rock bands, a reggae band, a ska band, a metal band, AND a rockabilly band all competing for the same limited gigs at the County Fair, community events, and occasional restaurant. I got to Yale expecting to be in a band and... A CAPELLA?!!! I had never even hear barbershop music before. It seemed that NO ONE was interested in playing guitar, being in a band, or even getting together for a weekend jam. There was one guitar star with an unusual name that invoked some English Lit author ("Byron", "Bronte", "Frankenstein"? I can't remember). He would thrash out some Hendrix style solos at the occasional "Screw your Roommate" dinning hall party. But otherwise NOTHING. You were clearly further advanced and FAR more dedicated than me. I hit that wall of apathy at Yale and eventually abandoned guitar. I took some classical and jazz lessons, but with no one to play with or for I eventually gave up. I didn't pick up the guitar again with any serious focus for twenty years. What a shame. Now I play several hours a day for the sheer pleasure of it. I wish I had understood that was OK way back then.

I personally think the best solos in terms of musicality are still the one's from David Gilmour, and he can do speed bursting too. I guess it is the old balance between virtuosity and musicality.

I saw Extreme when they came to Houston, a dual-lead style guitar band opened, then Alice in Chains took the stage before Extreme, I don't think anyone even payed attention to them at all, a friend of mine even took a short nap at our bar table while they played. AIC was totally out of sync with what was going on at the time. Then of course, Extreme followed and destroyed the place. Small club too, I was about fifteen feet from the stage. A few months later, "More Than Words" hit, and they were popular. I remember a girl in my 12th grade history class asking me where I got my Extreme concert shirt from, I said: "Uh...from the concert." She was dumbfounded, because Extreme hadn't toured Houston yet....you know, on their popular tour. haha.

Lol. In want to drink beer and talk to Troy for few hours . The opening to this Video blows my mind. I’ve have lived exactly what he is talking about. I have been to the frat party where all anyone seemed to know was EVH. I’ve been drunk in college to see living on a prayer or panama be regarded as the sanitized “dude ... I like heavy metal” conversation. I’m 53, from the suburbs, and seemed to have gone through the exact same experience as Troy has on every single level. man it is shocking how well these videos are made. really man, this is great stuff. especially for us newbies at guitar, thanks troy, its refreshing to see more "real" people in the youtube guitar scene. i like how this channel seems to touch on the topic of "the mind of playing guitar" more than most channels. there are some out there, and there should be more. a lot of us struggle more with the mental side, than the physical side of playing music. being satisfied with your playing is something i think we chase but never actually accomplish.

Troy, when I watched this episode, I was shocked at how close my own experience was. Nuno was breath of fresh air in a sea of boring angst (playing wise). I played in a popish band around that time, with a female singer who wanted to listen to Extreme because of "More Than Words." She was surprised at how rockin' they were. I saw them with ZZ Top, with all these biker dudes staring at Nuno playing, not knowing who he was. I actually named my cat Nuno, in the 90's. I even ran track in high school (and college). My playing experience? I kind of gave up on the shred thing and figured, I'm a good blues player, but I just can't quite get the shred thing down. Very cool stuff, listening to your own journey. Thanks so much for this great series! Killer production too. PS. I'm practicing some shred again.

I agree 100% about Nuno, who is special, a musician's musician. His unbelievable riffage comes from his background of playing drums. I also feel that behind his EVH influence is a huge Jimmy Page one as well. He uses a lot of Page's licks and his approach to soloing -- it's just at warp speed and with flawless technique, lol. Troy I love your series... I think its great, imaginative and very entertaining. A great combination of of instruction, entertainment and narrative. Keep up the GREAT work!!! I myself developed the Yngwie technique myself also, with no sampler. I just kept listening to the solos oner n over and thankfully, I think Yngwie mentioned the book "Scales and Modes," in a guitar player interview. Based on the song Too young to die Too drunk to live I developed my own way of playing those arpeggios which I later found out were the wrong positioning. But the experience combined with the aforementioned book and finally instructional videos, it started to come together for me. But I never could get Vai's solo down in the song for the Love Of God. I decided also years later that I wasted all this time on trying to be a guitar hero and should have worked on being the vocalist. I was signed to A&M records at 21. It was a wimpy pop band, 7 piece with a sax that went nowhere.

The end of this episode is very good. There is a lesson to be learned here. Maybe a little different then what I would take away from it versus what you took away from it, but still a lesson never the less.

Man, these almost seem cathartic. A kind of purging for your personal history! haha I was in an "ultimate" guitar contest in Memphis. 1992? Got 2nd place and my damn equipment (6 " cord) messed up and caused a 15 min delay and prob cost me 1st place. But I hated contests, hate them now and I really only entered at the behest of prob some friends. Did you do all the animation for these? I'm sure you did the music but these surely took some time because you'd have to write your script, find or create the art/animation, do the sfx/music.... anyway, been enjoying these so far! Mainly because I went through exactly what you describe. trying to learn those monster players. hahahah

Thanks! That's exactly correct -- we write the script, then do the animation, then write / record the music and sfx. It's a process but we love doing it. You can catch some btw features on our channel about our technical process. Thanks for watching!

***** I saw that headless horseman spot. pretty nice. Of course the mondo lick at the end was the icing and heck, you should have thrown in a few evil low notes during also just percolating under the surface and finally.... BAM. hahahhaah I'll see if I can find that stuff on how you do your vids. I dabbled with some animation but not as much as you or you guys/gals. I do voice now for a living and guitar since 1974 and I dabble with soundtracks.

Awesome videos man! Pretty interesting to see all the things you went through in your musical life... Feel very identified with the technical things, the getting stuck after a certain level, and not being able to get quite... there... Can't wait to see more episodes!

Thanks Marcelo! Indeed, so many of us have faced similar challenges with this instrument. The point of Season 1 is not to represent me specifically, but really everyone who has ever struggled with technique. I'm glad to hear that message is getting across. Thanks for watching!

Ha. I remember looking through my exes CD and tape collection from when she was a teen and seeing Extreme in there amongst a load of boyband stuff and I instantly knew it was because of More than Words. To be fair though, she also liked Bill and Ted and Come Play With Me but she had never realised it was the same band

Nuno leaves people like Yngwie for dead, no question, never mind his left hand, his right hand on its own betters everybody else! Loved seeing a clip of Vito too, such incredible phrasing!

+stratmanuk I always find these sorts of comparisons tedious and unnecessary. All great musicians in every way, and I like all of them. I couldn't care less who is 'better', I like the music. Of course, I wish I could play even half as well! such is life. I respect all musicians who go for it ... its a tough career, much like being an entrepreneur, except the odds of making it are probably even worse, as are the exit options.

This should be on Netflix! I love the music in this series. I miss my Gibson Les Paul Custom that I left behind when starting grad school. I doubt I can still play Alan Holdsworth after a couple years out of practice!

Oh man! I've been sitting here watching these all day, and it's like you've been telling my life story UNTIL the guitar contest. I entered one and ended up winning it (but this was in Perth, Australia... aka one of the most isolated cities in the world!! So basically zero competition haha)

***** Yeah, people forget or just don't realize that there was a pretty vibrant underground alternative rock scene in the 80's (it just got NO exposure in the mainstream lol). Bands like The Pixies, Sonic Youth, and MBV were 80's bands. It's just that that whole scene happened to break through in the 90's with the whole Nirvana-Nevermind catalyst. Those Seattle and alt-rock bands of the early to mid 90's didn't just come out of nowhere, they had many influences and roots in the 80's, it's just that their influences didn't wear spandex and have poofy hair haha.
