It's true, they were / are a classic band. I'm basically mocking myself in that scene for not really 'getting' the power of what I was watching. Not sure if that comes across clearly in the episode but that's the subtext!
@1310an10 жыл бұрын
***** I thought as much. The late Jani Lane said he knew the age of hair metal was over when he was in a meeting with Columbia Records and saw Warrant posters replaced with AiC. On a separate matter, do you cover the styles and techniques of the artists featured in this series in a lesson format (i.e. Masters of Mechanics?)
@troygrady10 жыл бұрын
I saw that Behind the Music! Season 2 is where we get technical on the actual mechanics of these different players. We just released S2E2 where we completes the Yngwie style. The Season Pass is a pile of technical downloads - slow motion clips and tab. But the episodes themselves are powerfully analytical. Depends how deep you want to go.

This brought back memories. I saw Extreme for the first time at Sundance on Long Island. Same tour (Sept 1990) with AIC opening up, and I remember having the same reaction. I was also at the Spit guitar contest, and if memory serves me, I knew "Mr. Handsome". Your description of Yale had me in stitches laughing! That was my EXACT experience as well (TC'92). I played rock/blues guitar as did nearly EVERYONE at my High School. During my senior year, students at my school had two pop/rock bands, a reggae band, a ska band, a metal band, AND a rockabilly band all competing for the same limited gigs at the County Fair, community events, and occasional restaurant. I got to Yale expecting to be in a band and... A CAPELLA?!!! I had never even hear barbershop music before. It seemed that NO ONE was interested in playing guitar, being in a band, or even getting together for a weekend jam. There was one guitar star with an unusual name that invoked some English Lit author ("Byron", "Bronte", "Frankenstein"? I can't remember). He would thrash out some Hendrix style solos at the occasional "Screw your Roommate" dinning hall party. But otherwise NOTHING. You were clearly further advanced and FAR more dedicated than me. I hit that wall of apathy at Yale and eventually abandoned guitar. I took some classical and jazz lessons, but with no one to play with or for I eventually gave up. I didn't pick up the guitar again with any serious focus for twenty years. What a shame. Now I play several hours a day for the sheer pleasure of it. I wish I had understood that was OK way back then.

I saw Extreme when they came to Houston, a dual-lead style guitar band opened, then Alice in Chains took the stage before Extreme, I don't think anyone even payed attention to them at all, a friend of mine even took a short nap at our bar table while they played. AIC was totally out of sync with what was going on at the time. Then of course, Extreme followed and destroyed the place. Small club too, I was about fifteen feet from the stage. A few months later, "More Than Words" hit, and they were popular. I remember a girl in my 12th grade history class asking me where I got my Extreme concert shirt from, I said: "Uh...from the concert." She was dumbfounded, because Extreme hadn't toured Houston yet....you know, on their popular tour. haha.

Troy, when I watched this episode, I was shocked at how close my own experience was. Nuno was breath of fresh air in a sea of boring angst (playing wise). I played in a popish band around that time, with a female singer who wanted to listen to Extreme because of "More Than Words." She was surprised at how rockin' they were. I saw them with ZZ Top, with all these biker dudes staring at Nuno playing, not knowing who he was. I actually named my cat Nuno, in the 90's. I even ran track in high school (and college). My playing experience? I kind of gave up on the shred thing and figured, I'm a good blues player, but I just can't quite get the shred thing down. Very cool stuff, listening to your own journey. Thanks so much for this great series! Killer production too. PS. I'm practicing some shred again.

Troy I love your series... I think its great, imaginative and very entertaining. A great combination of of instruction, entertainment and narrative. Keep up the GREAT work!!! I myself developed the Yngwie technique myself also, with no sampler. I just kept listening to the solos oner n over and thankfully, I think Yngwie mentioned the book "Scales and Modes," in a guitar player interview. Based on the song Too young to die Too drunk to live I developed my own way of playing those arpeggios which I later found out were the wrong positioning. But the experience combined with the aforementioned book and finally instructional videos, it started to come together for me. But I never could get Vai's solo down in the song for the Love Of God. I decided also years later that I wasted all this time on trying to be a guitar hero and should have worked on being the vocalist. I was signed to A&M records at 21. It was a wimpy pop band, 7 piece with a sax that went nowhere.

Got 2nd place and my damn equipment (6 " cord) messed up and caused a 15 min delay and prob cost me 1st place. But I hated contests, hate them now and I really only entered at the behest of prob some friends. Did you do all the animation for these? I'm sure you did the music but these surely took some time because you'd have to write your script, find or create the art/animation, do the sfx/music.... anyway, been enjoying these so far! Oh man! I've been sitting here watching these all day, and it's like you've been telling my life story UNTIL the guitar contest. I entered one and ended up winning it (but this was in Perth, Australia... aka one of the most isolated cities in the world!! So basically zero competition haha)

Ha! Congrats on winning. I was not ready for prime time yet. But the other guys on stage liked my TV theme show jokes. Everyone else was too wasted to notice!

I loved the flash of TNT's Tonight I'm Falling For You. Ronnie LeTekro was a bad ass guitarist!

i saw them last 2014 here in the Philippines, damn. They were still tight and Nuno didn't mess any guitar riffs or solo.

But of course! The '90s started in the '80s. And the '80s died in the '90s.

***** Yeah, people forget or just don't realize that there was a pretty vibrant underground alternative rock scene in the 80's (it just got NO exposure in the mainstream lol). Bands like The Pixies, Sonic Youth, and MBV were 80's bands. It's just that that whole scene happened to break through in the 90's with the whole Nirvana-Nevermind catalyst. Those Seattle and alt-rock bands of the early to mid 90's didn't just come out of nowhere, they had many influences and roots in the 80's, it's just that their influences didn't wear spandex and have poofy hair haha.
