In this episode I'll crack the Master Lock Safespace 5406D Portable Lock Box, and take you through some of the potential vulnerabilities I look for on a key box like this.
UPDATE: Commenter Fyra Banks said they found an easier way, which I've verified! If you put the decoder into the right side of the dial parallel to the shackle there is a marked knotch when you get the correct number. No need to advance the dials after, it'll just pop open. Oh yeah, for sure! A good couple of whacks with a heavy hammer or a grinder to the hinge areas would certainly open it up, but of course I was trying to be sporting about it 😂

Thanks for this! I just decoded mine and it would only work on the right-hand side also. Too sticky and jamming on the left side of the combo wheels. Important note I would add is once you find the 'bumps' for the right numbers, try move the whole 3-digit set either side of that until it unlocks because it can be a little unclear which number the 'bumps' correspond to

Just as a suggestion because I've heard others in the locksport space mentioning issues from it, you should resist the urge to jump-cut between scrambling the lock and then beginning the pick and keep it a single shot. It'll save headaches down the line when you've got that large sub count :D

You're not wrong... I really should have done it in one take. I thought I'd restart the camera so if it took too long to do the decode I could speed up just that one clip in my editor. Of course, I forgot I could always slice that portion out and do the same thing. It's good advice - I'll try to keep to a single shot where I can in the future.

I have one of these lock cases that I've forgotten the passcode to. I don't have any lockpicks and am wondering if there's a substitute tool I can use? Or maybe you can recommend an inexpensive tool? I know $20 isn't much, but I hate to spend that on something I'll only use once. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!

If you can find an old DVD or BlueRay case that was purchased from a store they typically have a rectangular sticker inside that was used for theft prevention. If you cut it open there are two very thin strips of metal. You can cut one of those to be pointed and it'll work the same way, albeit it'll be a bit more flimsy so be careful how much pushing you do.

can you feel the notches on both sides of each dial or just one? i have a rebranded one of these hanging outside my place that the previous tenant left. trying to get rid of it, but i swear to god i only feel the notches on the opposite side of where you're feeling here. (obviously, i haven't had any luck with those, however)

it's open now. i had two problems: the poor quality of my improvised decoder shim + the age of the box (requires a strong pull to open the hatch). my question above still stands, though... as an extreme amateur, this is really interesting to me: the way i got in was feeling the right side of the dial. once the positions were discovered, i didn't have to rotate the dials at all. it just opened. sure enough, i rotated each dial up four times, and at that point i could feel much more pronounced divots on the left side of each dial. (the left side feels like what you call "a clear 'knotch.'" the right side, when all dials are in correct position, feels like "a small 'dip.'" i'm able to reproduce this even after blindly scrambling the combination to something new. is that normal? i'm really tempted to go out tomorrow and buy a bunch of combination locks to mess around with.

Wow, interesting stuff! I was only feeling something on the left, but I'm game to go back and see what I can find! I'm traveling right now, but will do that as soon as I'm back. Glad to hear you got your box open. As for other locks... Many of them can be decoded with that method OR by pulling on the shackle hard to see where they jam up to find the gates. Buy away, it's fun! 😁

If you insert the shim on the RIGHT of the dial, parallel to the shackle there is a *marked* knotch that the shim falls into when you get to the correct number!
