** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
PulverizingPancake returns to the channel today with a wonderful hybrid of thermo and fillomino - hence the unusual layout in the video. This is such a lovely puzzle and it even names itself using the thermos!!
Do give the puzzle a try at the link below:
CtC link: app.crackingth...
Penpa link: tinyurl.com/y8...
Rules:
Each cell is part of a region of N cells (N can be 1 or higher). Regions of the same size can touch each other diagonally but not orthogonally. Cells on thermometers are in regions of strictly increasing size, starting from the bulb end (e.g. if the bulb is in a 2-cell region, the next cell along the thermo is in a region of at least 3 cells).
There is also a playable example of this puzzle type at the following link:

I enjoy the ~1 hour solutions. One technique that jumped out at me that Simon didn't use was what I think of as "fighting escalators"; if red is on thermo A and thermo B and blue is higher on thermo A, it can't be lower on thermo B. With thermos going in opposite directions, this limits how things can connect.

One hour, or thereabouts is just about perfect for me. Not that I mind longer "movies" on occasion. 20 minutes though is getting to be what I'd called a short. I really only expect/hope for that length if it's a technique video or a Classic these days.

1 hour is a great length. I always watch the videos on double-speed because normally there is enough thinking and deduction happening that it's not too hard to follow at the faster speed. Gets a bit fast at the end when filling in the last few numbers, but it's really Simon and Mark going through the break-in and the harder bits of logic that make these videos so fun to watch!

12:55 I don't think I can follow Simons logic here. He explains why the tip of the "U" with at least size 7 can't join to only blue, but I don't see why it couldn't join to both blue and orange. I know it's unlikely that the second cell of the Z-thermo is already a 8, but he would usually disaprove it beyond any doubt. But here he doesn't and never considered blue and orange to be the same region again. Can someone help?

around 14:15, didn't Simon just assume that Orange and Blue were different without proving it? i.e. didn't disprove that Orange could connect to Blue
@MiguelOliveira87
@MiguelOliveira87 2 жыл бұрын
I suppose one way to prove it is that Orange is larger than Yellow. Yellow is at least 6, so it'll have to use a cell in Blue's Z thermo that is larger than Blue. So, Orange > Yellow > Blue.
@BanaiFeldstein
@BanaiFeldstein 2 жыл бұрын
Yes he did. But here's some proof. That yellow below the 7 is at least a 6 region and has to get out somewhere, and it can only go to a cell on the Z thermo, so one of those needs to be lower than 7, thus 7 can't be lower on the thermo.

I finally had the time to watch this video properly because of my time consuming work and other IRL stuff but I wanted to say this and I hope you read also these older comments: I really did enjoy this puzzle type and I hope more of these pop out. It's a really natural and easy to understand puzzle concept. Also; I really enjoy these non-sudoku puzzle solves and I hope to see more of them on the channel. About the video lengths: anything goes because I watch videos selectively. Obviously if the puzzle and solve are interesting, I will watch the full video regardless of length. And regarding that last point, I usually skip mathematical/killer sudoku videos because they aren't my preferencial videos. Thanks again for the videos, team CtC and Simon, for this particular solve!

Here is my thinking about why long difficult puzzles appeal to us. You have to picture yourself and Mark when doing a long puzzle as elite athletes and the puzzles you are doing as cup finals. People love to watch people who are the best at what they do (puzzles or football) and will happily sit down for hours to do so. It's great entertainment and we get to see someone who is one of the best in the world practice their craft. We get to marvel at the skills that many people dream of having. So next time you do an hour long puzzle just remember that you are a premiership footballer playing in front of tens of thousands of fans in a cup final.

oh, no, I ADORE these long videos. You are wonderful to knit to and the short videos only cover a few rows, hardly enough to really get stuck in :) Also, I kind of enjoy to see you struggle a bit. Not in a mean way, but in the short videos, where you just fly through, there's hardly any tension and you almost make it look too easy, you know? In that sense long videos that are only long because you took your time (for a good reason!) to explain set theory don't really count, you still make those look easy. I like the challenges, where you sit there mumbling half sentences because you are stumped. I know you did it, because the video exists, but there is something about seeing how hard a puzzle really is. All of this is just me, obviously. I think the very best videos are where you enjoy yourself. When you adore the puzzle and are really having a blast, that shows and that's what makes you both so endlessly watchable. I still rewatch the Everything is Wrogn 2 movie every so often. You cannot convince me you weren't thoroughly enjoying yourself through that monster :)

I love the long videos! The logic is so wonderful, intricate, and forcing. Not only are the long videos "as good as" an equal length movie, I think they're far better than most of the stuff coming out in cinemas/tv/netflix/etc.

I think the most interesting puzzles land at 45+ minutes. I don't mind long videos at all. It just generally means the puzzle is more interesting. Anything lower than 45 minutes is probably nothing too unique but on the other hand is a puzzle I may actually attempt! So just keep making videos, I love them all for different reasons and this entire comment is no help to anyone!

I do enjoy the hour videos myself at least. With this video, I wanted to learn more about the fillomino puzzle type. So I tried to do it along with you, pausing to see if I could come up with something. I had many successes with it and I felt I learned more about it. I enjoy you doing it slowly and logically, because I don't care for guessing in sudoku or any other logic based puzzle.

I'm not bored with the long videos, but it's practically impossible to watch all the long videos, so for that reason I really want much more shorter videos and only occasional hour long ones. Anyhow, it was a fun solve to watch today.

In terms of video length, don’t worry about the general viewer. Try to please everyone and you won’t please anyone. I’ll generally try any puzzle where the video is shorter than 45 minutes (though I don’t always do very well), and watch if I’m in the humour and if it’s less than (say) 90 minutes, but I think you’ll have viewers who love the long videos, viewers who love the short videos, viewers who love every single thing you release, and viewers who hate-watch every solve. You’ll have viewers who skip anything that isn’t a sudoku and viewers who only watch your non-sudoku videos. Solve puzzles that you enjoy solving. Not every one of us will watch every one. But keeping the channel focussed on the type of puzzle you solve with enthusiasm and delight, with clear logic and explanations, will ensure you always have an audience.

Really interesting to see. What I appreciated about the end result of this puzzle was that there was exactly one region beyond the usual "thermo" constraints, the 10 in the corner. But of course, you always have to keep the 16 cell region possibility in your mind while solving. (Not that I attempted a solve of this one, haha.) Great work Mark and beautiful setting Pancake!

Cool! Want more different kinds of puzzles. 15:20 Why blue can't be orange? 25:25 If 8 joins 4 or 5 it creates a loop on its own thermo forsing orange 7 to be greater, so that's impossible.
@DaShikuXI
@DaShikuXI 2 жыл бұрын
If blue and orange are the same at 15:20, then the 6 on yellow has nowhere to go. It could at most take the bulb above it, but that would leave it at only 3.
@KombatGod
@KombatGod 2 жыл бұрын
Orange couldn't join with blue because yellow must necessarily join the "Z" thermo at a higher cell, so you'd have a loop in that case too.

38:58 finish. That end was tricky, and my path was not 100% logical, but I made it through. I colored each number a separate color, and made the 10-cell region a starburst pattern. Very fun, and different puzzle!

What helped me here (using the CtC software) was to use corner pencilmarks for "minimum size of the region" (usually from the thermo constraint), while using the center pencil marks for "needs to be one of these" (as usual in Sudoku). I got stuck near the end because I couldn't see the solution of "6 needs to be 9" (maybe because I somehow wrongly assumed all regions were of size 9 max).

Normally I find it hard to follow the logic as simon solves sudokus but in this video I found myself often ahead of him as he solved this because he kept getting hung up on his sudoku brain. Interesting how what you practice dictates how your logic follows. Not bashing him, I just find it interesting to see how his process differs from the sudoku that he's used to

I love the long ones, good to have a mixture though for everyone / situations where I only have 15-20 minutes free (I watch at 2x speed usually) 40-50 minutes is a nice average for me, but as even the 20 minute ones always have something beautiful about them, I'm happy with any video - but I do always get excited for a 90 minuter!
