** TODAY'S SUDOKU **
Yet another masterpiece from Phistomefel today this time with a puzzle called Cave Panem - which is an amazing take on Sandwich Sudoku. Stick around for the end of the video if you want to hear Simon sing some fabulous lyrics from one of our book backers: J S Hedegard - take a bow! Do give the puzzle a try at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. A number outside the grid gives the sum of the digits sandwiched between the 1 and 9 in that row/column. Orthogonally adjacent cells must not add up to 5 or 10.

One of these days, Phistomefel is going to publish one of these puzzles with no given digits and hardly any clues, and the rule set will be something like "Normal sudoku rules apply -- and there are other rules, but they are to be determined by the solver."
@DuncanGDA
@DuncanGDA 2 жыл бұрын
I can imagine that. Though with him giving the option of a few specific rules saying "One of these apply and lead to a unique solve" while the others all lead to varying dead end points. That would be evil

There’s a quote about Magnus Carlsen when he plays in a drawn endgame in chess, saying he can squeeze water out of stone. I feel the same way about Phistomefel and rulesets. Everything he touches turns to gold. Edit: you have a wonderful voice, Simon. :)

Simon, your rendition of “I crack the cryptic” was delightful. I am honored you took the time to record it and use it as the outro. My one minor quibble is that you misspelled my surname at the end, but most people do, so no biggie there [It’s ‘Hedegard,’ btw… Roughly translates to ‘garden on the heath’ in Danish]. Deep gratitude

What a great puzzle! Phistomefel is like an anaconda he finds ways of constricting cells in such an unobvious way. When you finally find it you're just in awe. With so few clues and having unique solution is why Simon gets so excited as he gets so close to finally finishing the puzzle. When you first look at the puzzle you wonder not that it can be solved but how in the world did someone find this. Also the song at the end, Simon did a great job singing and playing the guitar. I liked the words written for the song and I'm glad Simon shared that with us. Kudos to the person who wrote the song. Definitely well worth waiting till the end.

OMG, Phistomefel strikes again. Before 46:00 it was tantalizingly likely that he had managed to make every column the exact same vertical cycle of digits around 12539. So at 46:00 my heart sank when Simon was forced to place 12689. ...But it soared again when I realized that the slightly different 12689-cycle is probably the exact same over all 3 middle columns. And this turned out eventually to be true. Bravo.

This was a great puzzle - and I even think I might give it a try, as it did not seem horribly complicated to me (thanks to your solving it on the channel). I'll wait a few days so that the immediacy of my having watched you do it, Simon, won't make it trivial. As for the parody of Sound of Silence lyrics - genius. I just love that kind of thing! [The poem by Robert Frost called "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" lends itself to parody both sublime and ridiculous, for example.] And your singing voice is very sweet and pleasant to listen to. Have you had training? You are using mostly head voice, but you blend your registers very well. And I appreciate the good diction. Your guitar playing is wonderful. I am never sorry when you play the guitar, and I always wind back the video to listen to it more than once. Thanks for the unique experience that every video on CTC is - a wonderful and very appealing blend of logic, personality, enthusiasm, and a peaceful atmosphere.

I gave the puzzle a try for 15-20 minutes, but didn't managed to do anything special besides ruling out a few cells from being 1 or 9. Then I watched the beginning of the video, and learned from Simon the trick of coloring 1 and 9 in red, the rest in green. I gave the puzzle another shot, and with this coloring trick everything clicked, and solved the puzzle in 54 minutes. Guess I need more experience in Sandwich sudokus.

Key observation for me was that, wherever the 10s go, there's at least one 23 cell in rows 456, which rules out a 10 between R3 and R7 because it would have both 23s in the box, and the adjacent 10 would require a third. Because of the 5 in the middle, we can't have two 10s spanning the same rows, so there are four 10s to place, and only 4 possible places to put them. Two of the 10s will have a 19 in R5, and one must be in R5C8 for the 25 clue to work. Another example of pure class from his devilishness.

I finished it before watching the solution here! I quickly got the constraints, but a bit too quickly and locked my mind that the 25 sandwich had to have 4 digits inside, which was obviously wrong. And when I finally figured that out I got to a point where I forgot about the 5/10 constraint. But when I remembered that, the puzzle was very doable 😅 Great puzzle and fun to see Simon’s solution path

I finally see a phistomefel open before Simon. Yay me. I’m getting so much better at these puzzles likely from stealing pieces of Simon’s and Mark’s brains.

I just solved this puzzle and then watched this video (it's about 18 months after it was first posted), and I'm very surprised that neither Simon nor anyone in the comments noticed the extensive roping happening throughout the puzzle.

Marvellous puzzle as usual. Even managed to complete it myself (with a fair bit of help from Simon at the start!) Any ideas when / if the book will be available to order again?

It took me 1h33m but I got it! On my own! Every so often I'd get stuck and resume the video but I was always much farther ahead in logic than Simon was so I'd go back to poking at the puzzle on my own. This is the first time I've done a Phistomefel on my own and I feel very triumphant.

Continuing my catch up on my massive CtC backlog, I actually got daring and attempted to solve a Phistomefel: one with a video length over 50 minutes even! I somehow managed 80 minutes, which I consider a huge win. The funny and fun thing is as I was solving I was convinced the logic and path I was using must be exactly the intended thought process and path, at it was so extraordinary, yet Simon actually used rather different but complimentary thinking throughout most of his solve, yet it felt equally as intended. For example one way we differed was our break ins. Near the start I realized, in the course of thinking out the possibilities for the 10 value sandwiches and making sure that I wasn't missing any combinations, that there were only 5 possible positions, vertically that is, for each 10-sandwich in it's column due to the size of the sandwich. This was important because regardless of how the sandwich had it's 19 and 23 pairs placed, it would always have a 5 right in the center, so no two sandwiches could be in the same vertical position. BUT: in fact there were only four possible positions, because if a sandwich was exactly in the middle of it's column, putting a 5 in row 5, it would put a 23 pair in whatever box it was in, either box 4 or box 6 depending on the side of the grid it was on. Then the 10 value sandwich right next to it could not exist, because no matter how high up or how low down you tried to place it, it would still place either a 2 or a 3 in box 4 or 6, where there was already a 23 pair. So that meant that all four possible positions had to be used, once each, by the four 10-value sandwiches. From there I made further deductions based on the pattern the sandwiches had to form, discovered a 1923 quadruple in row 5, determined that the 25 sandwich in that row had to be 5 cells inside it's crust, and so on. Simon used some of the same facts I mentioned but went about it in a rather different but very clever way. It made watching the video kind of neat to see how he saw things differently.

Amazing puzzle and video as always. My solve was fairly different. I utilized the fact that 4678 could not be in 5th row for any of the 10 columns and was able to pencil mark the whole row at the start.

Yo, Simon you should do a Futoshiki video. Theyre pretty similar to arrow sudoku, but I've been having a lot of fun with em lately and I'd like to see how you look at em. Either way, love the channel, keep em crackin
