I love how many different explanations there are for the title of this one, seems like everyone has a different opinion on what it means. My first thought was mathematical induction but I'm increasingly convinced it's electromagnetic induction, like the adjacent coils in a step-down transformer. The way the rules combine so that the horseshoe in one box influences the polarity of the horseshoe in the adjacent box, and how that propagates around the grid, feels in step with the principle. (As an interesting aside, the first electromagnets in the 1820s-30s used horseshoe-shaped iron cores, so this would be historically accurate too!)

Well a proof by induction in Maths is very much about consecutive digits or an arithmetic sequence of digits, so it’s not *impossible* that this is what Phistomefel was referring to. In physics if I recall correctly induction refers to electromagnetic fields so if anyone can see a link there that would interesting. EDIT: After thinking about it, Simon essentially had to sequentially prove that the horse shoes had non aligning polarities with the polarities already having some type of proof on them, which is a mathematical proof by induction. But the non aligning polarities in themselves could be a reference to changing polarities between magnets. All in all, a very clever name by a very clever setter.

i only have gcse level physics under my belt so this may not be the greatest explanation, but EM induction occurs when the magnetic field lines rapidly swap direction/field lines are rapidly cut. since i cant see how the latter works here, i believe it could be referring to how the polarity of the numbers on the green lines rapidly goes back and forth due to the constraint?
@killamoosdraree730
@killamoosdraree730 2 жыл бұрын
The title of the puzzle is indeed I think the primary clue for how to break in. Because we always refer to polarities in German whisper lines, this gives them a magnetic reference. The necessity for the changing of polarities between the "magnets" in the boxes can be intuited by the term induction which in physics implies varying magnetic fields.
@thomasbui6175

I believe it is the maths version because he uses the orientation of one horseshoe to determine the next one at a time. kinda like knocking a domino in math induction proofs. But I guess, the horseshoes also kinda look like an induction stove

A positive electric field placed next to a conductor will induce a negative electric field in the surface of that conductor, and vice versa. I believe it's a reference to the polarity swapping between the nearby horseshoes.

But you have to say where those consecutive numbers are. You could say "A white dot marks every pair of adjacent cells containing consecutive numbers". The word *every* means that the extra sentence "All white dots are given" is not needed.

Phistomefel puzzle drops an hour before we are having company for dinner ... so I have to wait until nearly bedtime! This was very interesting. I actually had the hubris to download it and fiddle around with the logic surrounding the horseshoe shaped lines. I got that they could not be all high going straight down column 8, and got a little bit of a glimmer of an idea about how the non-consecutive part might work, and even took a stab at box 7 - but then I decided that I wanted to watch a brilliant man solve it, so I turned the video back on. Simon, very elegant. I know that some people (including yourself) feel that you were doing too much brute force and not enough logic in box 7, but for me, it seemed more like a continuation of your understanding how the interaction of the rules worked, not simply following a long chain that had its root in bifurcation. At least, I will assert that if you had not followed the two possibilities, I would not have fully understood why one possibility broke the puzzle and the other one was the correct one. I also very much like the plural of "apex," which is indeed "apices" - analogous to the plural of "Index" which is "indices." Wonderful word formation, isn't it. Thanks so much for a lovely evening watching a brilliant puzzle be solved. I loved it.

Also, there's Inductive Reasoning...where you take a specific case (say, one horseshoe) and apply your analysis of it broadly (say, to the other horseshoes). Which applies for determining the relative polarities of the horseshoes as well as the prohibition of "N, N+2" pairs of the same polarity on the horseshoe.

@32:00 you can eliminate things from r2c8, it can at this point never be 6 since either the two high digits on the horseshoe are 78 and so it can't be next to the 7 or one of the digits on the horseshoe is 6 and again the centre can't be 6. Similar logic around 1 and 2 allows you to also eliminate 1 from r2c8 so it's down to 4 or 5.

I felt that way as well. I feel like he usually likes his to flow more elegantly, but this one seemed like it needed a whole lot more of just brute force pencil-making every option to notice when cells were more restricted than they seemed at first glance. It's an interesting idea for an interaction of rules but I almost wonder if Phistomefel is 100% happy with how this one turned out after it came together.

A fairly easy trick that I learned through the miracle sudoku app and doing tons of non-consecutive puzzles is to do with cell options, and it let me see how to break box 7 much earlier, if you ever narrow a cell down to consecutive digits, it restricts all of the cells around it, if you get down to 3 consecutive options, every adjacent cell cannot be the middle digit, once I got 8 forced up in the corner and saw the 123 next to it I knew 2 would have to go in the top right cell and break the box, that's how I saw it anyway. Another quick trick is that if you ever get a cell down to 2 consecutive digits, none of the adjacent cells can be either of those digits, because it would repeat or be consecutive.

Also on the other hypo you can fill the boxes selected around 36:40 -- the one with the 8 has to be 123 while the one with the 7 has to be 12, which means neither can have a 2 without adjacency problems, forcing a 1-3 fill (which would save a small step later in proving that version impossible) :edit: Ah he sees this when he re-works that bit to check himself

It is very likely to be connected to the physics/eletromagnetic meaning because I see a lot of similarities! Electromagnetic induction is a phenomenon in which electromotoric force is being made which creates a current. Now about similarities: 1. The current that is being created is AC, which oscilates between negative and positive value 2. Electromotoric force is being made due to magnetic field changing, so it oscilates as well 3. The shape that you called horseshoe, i think night be a coil as well and that would make sense because coil is essential thing in induction along with magnetic field

i think what would have helped simon with this solve is realizing that certain combinations of cells always eliminate an orthogonal neighbor, for example: at 30:08 there are a few deduction. the 12 blue cell in box 3 eliminates a 1 from the center of the box. in box 3 as well, you have a 678 and a 78. so if there’s no 6, you have a 78 pair which eliminates 6 from the center cell, or you have 6 with a 78 and that still eliminates 6.

I observed that within each polarity of digits in a horseshoe there’s a sort of parity principal. So the high and low digits can never be one apart so they must have opposite parity to one another. A bit like two electrons in the same orbital must have opposite spin. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with electrical induction though. And although it helped my in the puzzle I still couldn’t solve it without Simon telling me where to look next several times.

Fun fact: the chances of getting a 3 in at least one corner in a random sudoku (that follows normal sudoku rules/doesn't favor any numbers over others in the corners) is 41.326%. I would explain my math but I'm on mobile atm and don't want to type it all out on the phone screen, I basically just got the total number of possible corner digit combinations under sudoku rules and the number of possible corner digit combinations without 3 under sudoku rules then just subtracted and divided to get the ratio (has 3 in the corner):(possible combos)

I thought that the title of this one was from the fact that Sudoku is purely deductive, the traditional opposite of induction. (I think that "induction" us actually a grab bag of argument forms, following Peirce and Lipton's work on abduction.)

I do like to tidy up as I go so once I had worked out 3, 4, 8 and 9 in box 4, I knew that the 7s cannot surround the 8, the 5 cannot be in centre because of the 4, and the 5s cannot surround the 4, similarly the 2s cannot surround the 3. And either 1 or 6 must be in one of the corners

51:53 for me. I have somehow solved it, but I’ve used bifurcation a couple of times and I feel like I missed several important pieces of logic. Time to watch the video to see what the actual solvepath is! Edit: Well, apparently I did find every piece of logic. I’m surprised Simon doesn’t consider the logic on box 7 to be bifurcation, but if that was the intended path then I didn’t miss anything.

It's possible to avoid bifurcation. You just need a series of concise deductions. Lots of stuff in that corner is restricted when you look closely. Simon doesn't bifurcate nearly as often as Mark does, but this time he did. It's a shame and injustice towards the puzzle.

@@terracottapie Just pencilmarking in box 7 for the most part. Realising the bottom two digits on the X shaped whisper line have to be 1289 helps, that restricts the top two down to 3467, as does pencilmarking the 2 and 5 locations in box 4 and using them. IIRC the 2 is the digit that causes the most trouble, but you end up colouring the box the same way as the X whisper line.

@legobil_

I don’t think it was very bifurcatory to be honest. He logically figured out two possible states for the whisper-line that went through box 7 and 8 (the two high digits and the two low digits), and from those two states, the rest of the digits were forced from the rules. Imo, bifurcation would mean more guess work and to call “placing big digits” a form of bifurcation is to do both the puzzle and solver a disservice as that way was the easiest way to visualize it.

45:05 Indeed r2c1 can't be 6, and it also cannot be 9. Just simple Sudoku, because 6 and 9 are already in column 1. The same holds for 8 in r2c3.

Well, you still missed a beautiful shortcut through the three 45 cells after you arrived to the situation at 59:28. Think about possible places of 5 in box 6. As 5 is an important and restricted digit, and as two of the three 45 cells (r2c8 and r4c4) had to be the same digit, what if they both were 5? Then 5 would have no place in box 6, as there is a 5 in box 4 in row 6 and the other two 5s would rule out all other non horseshoe-cells in row 4 and column 8. So there was a simple deduction r2c8 and r4c4 both needed to be 4 to not rule out 5 from box 6. Then r2c4 becomes 5 and this helps solve the rest quite fast. At 1:02:15 you shunted the 8 into box 9, row 9, so it couldn't be on the whisper any more already at that point. Both of these only cost you a few minutes in an anyway longer solve which I think I would have needed way longer, so no accusation, just a friendly hint on where you could also have had your attention.
