That shows the difference between a novice & a pro. I probably would not have trusted that split down the middle all the way through. But the pro saw what was possible and made a beautiful bowl. Deal! You want to know the truth, Valerie? These crazy, natural pieces I turn have so much character that they hide my inadequacies. (Wow, thank you spell check!) That's why I turn them. You couldn't find a tool mark or torn grain in any of my pieces 'cause you're looking someplace else! Kinda why I keep the lights turned down low in the house. Can't see the dust!

I must admit that my heart 'skipped a beat' when I saw all those cracks as I wondered how it would hold together. It must be said that I am not a wood turner just a retired, disabled Art Teacher in South Australia so I guess I view from a different angle to most. Having seen how you masterfully handled those crack I'm amazed but it is a beautiful result. I've said it before but it must be said again, I think you are 'a genius' with wood turning tools in your hands. I Love the comment from 'The Wild Dinkus' & the sawdust & your reply, but in many ways I think he is right. Who knows what you could do with it???? Apart from the crack that goes right through the middle, the other cracks are nothing but amazing & bring heaps of character to the bowl. Yea, I do think you are a 'genius', one among a few others that I follow. Thanks again for sharing your skills & your joy in what you do. Take great care of yourself. Don

All fruit wood cracks because of the high water content unless it's cut in the winter when the sap's down even then it's iffy. But how the bark didn't crack along with the rest is beyond me? Once again a tenacious turning Phil! Great job...
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, Rob! I think that's what makes this wood special. The fact that it cracks but leaves the bark alone is very unusual. Thank you!
