I do believe we're in desperate need of a refresh. It's 2024 and Proxmox 8 (with the dropped support of Pascal and older cards on 17.0 and later) is its own beast in and of itself. Getting driver 16.5 to work on 8.2.2 with Kernel 6.8.4-3 is a total nightmare.

I'd love to see an AMD GPU variant of this, especially since we're talking about older GPUs for something like this. AMD GPUs also wouldn't require dealing with enterprise licenses nor NVidia's terrible linux drivers.

There is no AMD method for this that works with consumer cards. I'd love it if there was.

AMD hasn't released a vgpu capable gpu in many years, so the Linux solution just isn't there, but his videos on using windows hyperV to share a GPU (Google easy gpu-pv) does work for AMD cards.

@@CraftComputing I've managed to passthrough a RX580 (2nd slot) in Hyper-V in windows 11 pro. The problem I encountered was that the pci-e DDA is not supported in my version of windows. I did some more digging and found that I need windows server OS in order to do what I wanted to do. As soon as I am feeling brave I will be attempting a 2 gamers 1 pc using hyper-v with my current system.

LOVE THIS JEFF! For those struggling with the Nvidia profiles, make sure you choose a profile with a Q beside the sizes. There are several letters, but I found this buried in the vgpu issues section and it was the solution!

I'd like a step by step disaster recovery, of-course this would need to be "simulated" by Jeff, but this would really teach us some very important basics! Creating servers is fun and all, but disaster recovery won't be if you don't know what you're doing :) Basic explanation of scrubbing and the different pool states would be really helpful.

I had struggled for four days with my P40 on Proxmox 8, running a Win11 for gaming and a PopOS guest for Yolo training. But I finally made it work with 17.3 host driver and 550 guest drivers. My mistake was not setting the vGPUs as primary on the Proxmox GUI. My excuse is none of the tutorials mentions this.

Update: then I changed to 16.7 host driver and the corresponding grid drivers for the guests as newer grid drivers don't support Pascal and I could only make licensing work without changing pci_ids. The Linux guest drivers recognize it as grid GPU no matter what pci_id I use, and after 20 minutes of using the GPU it gets disabled without licensing and licensing only works with the GRID drivers.

An idea for another video along these lines: The monster workstation: Simultaneously running windows, linux, macos and TrueNas Scale VM that all the other machines connect to develop code. And have all three build and run game code at the same time. You could do it two ways, one using 1 video card split like this and another each having a dedicated gpu.

NOTE: You are free to NOT use "HashTag" in this context because, while it IS a 'hash', it is most definitely NOT a 'tag'. "Pound Sign" is almost exclusive to the US though. Something I think needs to be noted EVERY time we talk about device passthrough... Memory Ballooning is NOT SUPPORTED when passing through devices. It WILL cause craziness. ... I learned this the hard way after several weeks of troubleshooting. Someone just happened to mention it like it was a 'well known' problem. Which it is clearly not. It is listed somewhere in the fine print, but I haven't seen it mentioned pretty much anywhere else.

Hey guys! The pci_id and pci_device_id trick worked very well in proxmox with a Windows VM. But applying the same trick to Linux (Ubuntu 22.04 - Nvidia Drivers v535) do not have the same result. The command "lshw -C display" shows the tricked GPU: product: GP104GL [Quadro P4000] But "nvidia-smi" shows: GRID P4-2Q And encoding/decoding do not work on plex or jellyfin. Has anyone an idea how to apply this trick to Linux VMs as well? Thanks!

Less money spent, less noise, more convenient maintenance. - Are there any examples of calculations what is more profitable to buy in 2024 ? 2 separate computers or 1 powerful one ? If it works with this setup then, I would recommend Moonlight over Parsec. Enable nvidia gamestream on the server then run moonlight on the client side. I get lower latency and better picture quality with moonlight over parsec.

It's usually not the DRM but rather anti-cheat being hit or miss depending on title. For microphones you probably can just do a USB passthrough by the Proxmox Web GUI (or via LibVirt if you're using something else).

One thing I have found. If your install is EFI with zfs the grub change for IOMMU will not work. You need to instead create /etc/kernel/cmdline and put what cat /proc/cmdline returns with the iommu turn on command you need. Then run pve-efiboot-tool refresh and reboot. Being my system is a multi-function setup zfs was part of it which added a small twist.

One thing I noticed, it looks like the value you have listed for doing an override to create an 8GB vGPU seems to cause an assertion error that prevents the VM from starting. After changing the value from 7874106708 to 8053063680, it started up normally. I think it's because the first value is not divisible by 1024?

Windows runs great or good enuff using part of my Tesla p4. Wanted to alo use this with a Linux VM running Jellyfin and use the other half for Hardware Transcoding but whenever I attempt to do this the Nvidia grid driver breaks and I have to reboot the system. There are other guest drivers that came witj tje 535.104.06 package maybe Im not using the right one? been pulling my hair out over this one for weeks! any help would be appreciated! thanks!

Weird, I have followed all of these steps but it seems that there is still one oddity left. after 20 minutes of uptime on the guest's side the frame-rate drops automatically to 15 FPS. I do understand that it is probably an indication that the vgpu driver license is not activated, but shouldn't the vgpu-unlock binaries solve this issue?

curious why the framerate limiter wasn't taking effect during your example running Heaven? was the profile not setup or applied correctly? I would have expected to see 60fps from heaven, and less than 100% GPU utilization.

This method is for spliting a gpu for multiple VM's but If I want to get 1 physical gpu for every VM, I have to do the same thing like in this video or is easier to passthrough and no modifications needed?. Passing through 1 GPU per VM is easier if you have the money. You have to do most of the stuff before the first reboot, but most of the stuff after the reboot is specific to this solution. There are guides on the Proxmox Wiki for GPU passthrough.

Super helpful tutorial. Thank you! The only thing that I am struggling is the Code 43 error. After I install the driver in Windows, it's ok. But the next time I boot the machine, I got code 43. @@nickobard Yes. It works only with the specific drivers. I am running 510.85.03. One tip, after you install the correct driver make sure you disable the automatic driver update in Windows, so the it is stay the same. That solved my problem. However I saw there is a new script version, which allows you to run more up-to-date drivers. But it requires a clean install.

Not sure if you will see this or reply to it, but since the M40s are showing their ages, do you have any suggestion of an affordable upgrade to them? I know your latest videos showed the RTS A5000, but I'm not really willing to spend $2000 on one of them.

I'd recommend just using Aster Multiseat over this, it's going to be a lot faster and easier to setup.

Friend, I have a question. I want to play around with an Nvidia P4 for graphics processing with OpenCV, without modifying the clock or using it as a video card. I won't be modifying the standard clock. Do I still need to add an additional cooler? Or can I use its passive dissipation without adding any cooler?

I get this when trying to install the Nvidia drivers: ERROR: Failed to run `/usr/sbin/dkms build -m nvidia -v 510.47.03 -k 5.15.35-1-pve`: Kernel preparation unnecessary for this kernel. Skipping... Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.15.35-1-pve (x86_64) Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/510.47.03/build/make.log for more information. And then: ERROR: Failed to install the kernel module through DKMS. No kernel module was installed; please try installing again without DKMS, or check the DKMS logs for more information. Followed by installation failed. Any advice on how to fix this?

@@jartran I ended up downloading the 7.1 Proxmox ISO, reinstalled, updated and avoided doing a dist-upgrade and everything has been progressing well. For some reason however my M40 is now refusing to show on the system, I also have a 1050 card which I will try pulling. Anyway, if you are still stuck falling back to the older version may be key, perhaps after the driver is installed with dkms it may make the upgrade to 7.2 but I'm not going to try just yet. Cheers.

There's a fix I posted link but idk if KZbin is blocking it or Jeff is :/ but it's failing because your on newest kernel and this tutorial won't work . You have to use the newest driver and patch it
