I think the dowel failure was a success for the design. The rounded square slats look amazing and fit the overall design much better.

I didn`t intend to make use of this woodworking book, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* but rather curious about it. I had been truly amazed right after trying it. It never disappointed me in my wish to acquire more information about the art of wood working. Many topics were covered, including everything from wood types to developing your workshop.?

“Turn the router speed down for hard maple to avoid burning” I’m literally sitting here having coffee before I’m about to rout an edge on a ton of maple. That’s a great reminder with perfect timing! ...And beautiful project too btw!

This is incredible. The most amazing thing about this is that you know it will be safe for your child because you built it. I wish I knew how to build when my first was born.... his crib (that I bought) broke in the middle of the night! I walked in to find the rail completely broken with the slats just hanging loosely!! And when they are teething they tend to bite the crib so using Rubio was a great call!

Congrats on the upcoming bundle of joy! Had my first child (a daughter) last April - can confirm, its a great time to have a baby since it starts to get nice out and you don't have to stay couped up indoors. Getting out and about and walking around can help keep mom/dad/baby sane. Good luck! And great video!

Very nice. Sweet that you made that for your baby. I’m 59 and I still have the cradle that my parents designed and had made for me. Many babies have used that cradle. I’m hoping that someday my grand babies will use it! FYI, babies often chew on the wood on cribs, when they are teething (little beavers!) Just today James King, who donates his sawdust to animal shelters, said that walnut (I’m 99% sure he said walnut) cannot be donated. So you might want to double check to make sure that humans can chew on walnut. I don’t want to freak you out, but thought that you should know (I hope that I’m remembering wrong and that walnut is ‘edible’ for humans.) A baby will change your heart and your life forever! Congratulations.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Barbara! As long as you don't have a severe tree nut allergy, humans can chew on Walnut all they want. The finish also provides a barrier, so we should be good.

Kind of crazy.... I sat in front of SketchUp last night laying out a crib for my God Daughters baby and came up with an almost identical design. Even plan on using hard maple and walnut. Don't have a hollow chisel mortiser so am leaning towards dominos for the spindles instead of M&T. Yours turned out great.

great news! On the topic of the build - its great! My guess is that you have left mattress low for the purpose of filming - but you will need mattress as high as possible for the first few months - in order to make it easy for yourself (especially the Ms as it will be harder for her to bend over that much)

Nice piece and congrats on needing it. I had a similar issue many years ago with a similar bit trying to get square stock perfectly round. The best I could come up with was leaving additional length to the stock and leaving the ends square, then trimming them off. Also, adjusting the fence so that there was just a paper thin set-back so I wasn't removing any material at the center. Either way, it's a bummer. Fail fast, fail cheap, adjust your methods and move on.

Beautiful bed, well done! I would just suggest to attach somehow the slats to the frame, as babies often pukes and pee in bed, you'll have to remove the matress quite often to change the bed sheets. It will be really frustrating if you have to reposition the slats every time.

Normally in my experience you need to cut to approximately 1-1/16” square to get a 3/4” round. Simple formula would be D x 1.414 to find the correct flat to flat distance for your raw stock (e.g. .75 x 1.414 = 1.0605). Inversely you use D x .707 to find your largest round required for a square flat to flat distance. Hope that helps in future projects.

If you watched Matthias Wandel's dowel making jig, I believe he turned the square stock mostly round on the router table, and then made it perfectly round with the chisel jig.

Mathias has a video about the difficulty of making perfectly round dowels with a router. His final solution was to use two router one after the other.

Yea, it was definitely challenging.

Videos keep on getting better!! Great quality. Beautiful crib. Out of curiosity, were the slats pinned down or are they just loose? I wonder if they have the chance of slipping out of place through movement.

Appreciate it, Ryan! Trying to continuously up my production value. The slats are loose, but they can't fall out as long as there is downwards pressure on them.

I know, it's a bit late, but is it possible, that you should have used a thinner ruler or straight edge to position the fence of the router table when using the half-round bit?! Awesome project with amazing outcome btw.

Thanks! I’m sure there was a way I could have made it work, but I’m still not sure what the solution was.

I dig it, Johnny! I think you did the perfect thing by adding the walnut on each end. And with that bright color in the baby's room, this piece just pops even more. I really like the idea of the note on one of the slats. Did you use your laser for that?
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, Bruce! I love the contrast. And no, I wrote the note by hand. The slats are too long to fit in my laser cutter.
