I have always sewn. But never tried quilting. Until October, 2019. I am 70 this year and I am a quilting addict. I have 15 grandchildren and 9 g-grandchildren. My precious babies are the recepients of my love. I love this gift that Jesus has given me.

My Great Grandmother, Grandmother and Aunt were quilt makers. My Great grand used mostly scraps and flour sacks for her quilts. They were intended to be utilitarian. As a child, sleeping under one of her quilts was so comforting. My favorite quilt was one she made from flannel shirt pockets. The backing was faded red denim. It was beautiful. The Gees Bend quilts remind me of Grandma Casey's quilts. Thank you for sharing.

In her first book Selma Lagerlöf has a chapter on what is needed to be happy, a quilting frame and a rose garden. When I first read about that I was like 14-15 yo, and I had no idea what a quilting frame was or looked like. She described this household of women who spent winter around their quilting frame sewing and telling stories, playing games and singing, sometimes with visitors sometimes by themselves. Since then I have wondered what these frames looked like .

Babette Zehren I had the privilege of seeing their museum/store and meeting several of the ladies and watched them quilt. One of my best quilting memories. I love the history behind their quilts using whatever they had to make them. Very similar to our ancestors.

The quilts are exquisite, the women are amazing and the stories they tell about their lives belong to the ages. My dream has been to spend a week at the home of one of these venerable ladies and learn from them how to quilt (which I've never done in my life). There should be a formal program for this. Can someone arrange it?

a real quilter dose not copy from another , you create your own idea from your soul and your imagination.

I think we all copy as we learn the craft. That's a great way to learn about quilts and quilting. Your own voice emerges as you go along, but anyone who makes a quilt is a real quilter.

They are quilts, but just not to your taste. That's fine, we all have our artistic preferences. I find Joe's quilts get me thinking about how to make mine, even the ones that I don't particularly love have something in them that inspires me!
