This is such a comprehensively deep breakdown of the parameters of the wave shaping engune.

Great overview of bass drum synthesis! My favourite machine for creating drum sounds is the Korg MS-20, but despite the semi modular features it can't do a lot of the things the LXR can.

The mighty MS20 - that machine was responsible for some of my best early memories of synths. One of the best drum machine sounds I ever heard was when my friend ran his Yamaha MR-10 through the MS20, I can still hear it in my head :)

Great stuff. Please do one of these videos for cymbals on the LXR. Thanks.

What are the most important things to concentrate on with a cymbal ?
@dinogoldie97167 ай бұрын
@@RichardDeHove Not sure (hence why I'm asking for a vid about it). I do know that when I'm programming (ride) cymbal sounds on the LXR, they too often turn into bell sounds.

@@dinogoldie9716 Fair enough :D It's a good idea.... maybe even a series.

@@RichardDeHove If I were to try and put cymbal sound design into words, it's about the dong and the shimmer (as opposed to kick sounds which are divisible into the thud and huff or, snare sounds which can be broken down into the pop and sizzle). I usually start out with a square carrier waveform then, on the FM page, mess with sine, saw and occasionally noise modulators to try and get what I'm aiming at. As far as filtering goes, whereas I prefer lowpass for kicks and bandpass for snares, cymbals and hats get the highpass treatment. Unfortunately, the LXR's pitch modulation envelope only goes from high to low, which is great for adding zap to kicks but useless for creating the "Bwwwong!" cymbal sound. Instead, I use a slow/trigger-synced LFO to control filter and that's almost as good for emulating that low-to-high "bwong" sound. .

You have a gift for describing sound! :D Now I must give it a try. Thanks for the detailed info.

cool kick! It would be interesting to make classic 808/909 kits on lxr.
