I have a 109 and urs is very quiet - very impressed. Mine is good but most YT videos w 109's sound like they are going to blow up!

The change gears aren’t on it, so it’s running a lot quieter. I recently acquired a 109 and it isn’t much louder with the change gears on than this one. I was worried about the noise level, but am quiet pleased with mine.

I going with my 109 further than anyone of you can even imagine...I replace original spindle with proper 3/4 size,so far gear reduction drive with pulley been succeed,I install 2 brass bushings and spindle enter there precisely..Next I will do same with regular pulley than head stock housing, boring 2 large size holes 26.3 and 24.3mm to support spindle bushings/bearings..Spindle gear been drilled for 3/4 hole and everything sits precisely, socond retaining hole required for proper gear balancing and retaining...By upgrading head stock and spindle assembly, spindle allow insertion of MT1 arbored tools plus have little larger than 3/8 hole drilled through, this allows deep drilling on lathe.By modifying things further gear box could be installed although bed and lead screw would take changes..This is how the model 109 lathe should be have 3/4 wide spindle, you can't perform certain jobs in electric drill spindle, that is not how it meant to work......

I will need to put it back together. I have had it apart for over a year. was redoing the table it was mounted to. and have been sidetracked. the lathe still has the stock motor. you could look at some of the other videos that I posted of my craftsman 109. there might be a shot of the motor set up

Looks like a fair amount of play coming from the tail stock. How well does it center on your work?

I am finding out that there is a good amount of wear on the ways, and other parts on this lathe... but when looking at the play coming from the tail stock. in this video, the tail stock was not clamped down to the ways, while I was sliding it back and forth. the original quill had a lot of wear both internal and external. so I made a new quill with 1/2-20 threads, having the jacobs chuck directly attached to the quill. In an attempt to take out some of the tail stock play. When everything is clamped down. and some shims in the tail stock, I was able to get it somewhat centered with what tools I had on hand at the time.. at the moment the lathe has been dissembled for the last year. i made some other mods, and was getting a lot of chatter.

Shouldn't you lock down the tailstock when using the drill chuck when drilling?

@@johnnyskinner6321 where are you looking for a chuck? the little machine shop has them, Ebay, and amazon. all have them. I would be careful of getting a used one. without looking at it. to verify all the threads are good.
