Good video man but I would have put that snap ring with the opening facing the bottom. that way there's metal touching metal all the way around the groove and it wouldn't deform the plate as much cuz there would be no open area at the top

I used your video for my 1/2” thin profile Craftsman 44996 repair kit 32772. They’re no longer sold but still valuable. The directions included from Craftsman were not the best. Thanks for the tutorial!

I use low odor mineral spirits and a toothbrush. I lube vintage low tooth count ratchets with Park Tool PPL-1 grease. It's similar to superlube in viscosity..

Good Craftsman ratchet video.

That cover plate is shockingly thin compared to a Snap-On or similar ratchet, I'm not surprised it gets bent.

I agree! It really relies on the snap ring. Although I like the ratchet, it could be improved.

That is actually the 84 tooth ratchet not a 60 tooth. I have quite a few of those dating back to the early 90s

The snap ring should be spun 180 degrees. It being upside down lead to that damage you fixed in the first place.

It probably should. But the plate almost looks to be made a bit too thin. It could well be twice the thickness in the original design.

My snap ring spins pretty freely and it's a brand new ratchet. I always keep it open down but it spins easy. Maybe their classic design is bad when made overseas. Thinner material and such

But looking closer it looks like it was ran over or something. The thin metal was bent all the way around

I have this exact same USA made ratchet and it very much needs to be disassembled and cleaned. I did notice that the snap ring is positioned 180 degrees opposite from the video. Very good video which makes the cleaning task much easier. Thanks.

agreed holes should be towards the narrow side that's how they all come from the factory

Why does my ratchet left tighten right loosen? Is this normal?or did someone put it together backwards?

You might have a ratchet built in the southern hemisphere. Some say things are opposite down there. 😂

Whoops, the C-Ring is upside down. Should have the two snap ring plier grabholes downward so more of the ring catches the groove. Probably came that way?

I have an 84T 1/2in basically brand new only used once or twice. What would cause the selector switch to catch and lock up while ratcheting? I am thinking about just taking it down to Lowe’s to see if I can just swapped it out with the warranty.

I used Super Lube on the internal surfaces of the ratchet including the pawl and gear. The pawl and gear would stick together and bind up due to the colder climate here. I disassembled the ratchet again, wiped the Super Lube off of the teeth on the gear and the pawl and used 3 in 1 oil on the teeth of the gear and pawl. I left the Super Lube on all other surfaces inside the ratchet except the teeth of the gear and pawl which I used 3 in 1 oil and it worked out great, no more binding. Just wanted to share my experience so I could save other people time and frustration.

Those face plates should be about 4 times thicker than the tin foil they used to make those face plates I have the new 84 tooth design identical to the one you had in the video except mine is of course made in China the only fought I have with the Craftsman ratchets are those flimsy face plates they really need thicker metal it would make them a much better ratchet in my opinion and honestly how much more could it possibly add to the cost I'd gladly pay a couple dollars more if they would use proper metal instead of tin foil on the face plate.

VW is not part of the model number. It's the OEM code for the manufacturer.

@Emerald lx --- I said 2007 if you look at my post; not 97. I have the 80th anniversary version (2007) and that was VW.

I lost the pin spring, where can I buy a new pin?
@DIYNexus

If you can source one of the original repair kits, that spring is included. Perhaps check eBay or call Lowe's as they handle Craftsman now too. Good luck!

If we keep wanting more and more teeth on our ratchet, eventually it will strip too easily No ?
@toolinhand
@toolinhand 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. The old 25 and 45 tooth ratchets I have, have pawls with only about 3 teeth on them. The 54, 72 and 120 tooth ratchets have pawls with about 7 or 8 teeth. It kind of makes up for the finer teeth.

I assume you mean the one from his other vids. I made one out of an old sawsall blade. Just ground it thin and smaller with the bench grinder. Just make sure you keep the hole in it

I'm guessing fixing the bent plate and C-Clip solved the majority of the slop in your ratchet head? I'll subscribe, but you better be making some awesome videos! lol.
@DIYNexus
@DIYNexus 7 жыл бұрын
Yes! I should have mentioned it at the end, but the slop was greatly reduced and the ratchet worked as good or better than it had when new. Thanks for watching. You win the distinction of being my 1st subscriber ever. :-) I'll do my best to not let you down!

Did they slap o rings in to take care of the poor tolerances? Never had sealing problems with my other socket wrenches without o rings. Those things could be a PIA to replace, slightly different diameters and/or thicknesses and then throw in standard and metric sizes. How could you bend the snap ring and that plate and still keep on going? This is like my wife keep driving the Mercedes when the temp warning light came on till it couldn't go any more. Keep the wife, junk the car ... LOL.

That super lube is crap, try some krytox, expensive but it lasts a lot longer. Some ignorant fuck got people going on that super lube shit early on in the craftsman ratchet videos. After a year at best the superlube wil be all dried up. Junk.
@godofm3tal1
@godofm3tal1 7 жыл бұрын
Little reality check here, you go to Sears and get a new rebuild kit for your "made in USA" ratchet, that ratchet is no longer made in the USA. Nobody gives 2 shits about the handle quality. It's the guts of the ratchet that matter and are sub standard when made in China or Taiwan. That said, crapsman has never been worth a damn. Better than they are currently but even gear wrench and husky have always put out better stuff. 60 teeth for fine tooth? Try the gear wrench 120 tooth. And I'm not even going to get into the mac or snapon difference.

That’s a scary ratchet design, using 3 rubber o rings inside the mechanism... Definitely not somthing you want in a ratchet. I think my one is a 2009 model. It didn't have any o rings in it
