This is not a "How to" be cautious working on machinery. Model 919.165200 Craftsman 5hp oil free compressor. Compressor would pop the breaker or only run for a few seconds. The initial issue was a bad capacitor that I replaced but I wired the cord for 220v without rewiring the motor which caused it to only run for a few seconds. After fixing all of that it works good and seems to have no further issues.

Nice work. Your air filter is probably better, but just FYI Lowes sells a universal air filter kit that has round and rectangular foam filters that fit the original housing. Incase not everyone has a 3D printer or wants to spend time fabing a new filter housing. Also capacitors are usually locally sourced at your appliance supply house for the cost of the juggle store. for $15 it's probably good to have an extra on hand for your A/C unit as well.

Hey good job figuring out your fluke and voltage situation.. You need a 10k resistor to dissipate those caps. Don’t do that screwdriver crap, it will damage a cap. Just curious , I see you are using a dryer plug. That compressor should be on a dedicated circuit with a properly sized breaker. If you are using a 30 amp breaker (like a dryer outlet would probably have) your motor could be severely damaged before you trip the breaker. Look at the fla rating on the motor! There were some recalls on the black shroud make sure it has grooves to breathe, it looks like u do. I have the exact same problem with my filter, props! That is an awesome fix ! With the vibration created by oil less compressors I usually recommend a locking plug and receptacle set up. 20 bucks at Lowe’s.

Seeing constant resistance on a capacitor has so far still worked on a few more I have tested but the fluke is definitely ideal. I had heard mixed opinions on the shorting method but since they aren't expensive I wasn't too worried about it. All the wiring is done by the book, that plug is on its own with its own breaker but I don't remember what rating it is. The thermal protection in the motor popped several times and I popped the breaker a few times without burning anything up (before I diagnosed the bad capacitor) but you might be right about the breaker size. The shroud lets air flow through it. I have been using it in a different building and haven't had the issue of it walking around which is nice, Thanks for all the input!

you wouldn't happen to have a user's manual for this one would ya? It doesn't exist online.

You are not checking the resistance, you should check capacitance of the cap. You need to hit the yellow tap at your tester to see the cap values. Hope this help.

At 8:00 I realized my meter did capacitance. Before that I was not necessarily measuring resistance but observing the change of internal resistance. As a capacitor charges the resistance increases from 0ish to infinity (open circuit) when fully charged, apparently most multimeters will simulate this because they feed a small current when measuring resistance. While this won't tell you what the capacitance is it will at least show if has the ability to build a charge

Sorry, I didnt save that info but at 5:40 I show the brand and part number, I ordered it off amazon. Make sure its specs match the one you are replacing. The only specs you can get away with being different is maybe size, the replacement capacitor was shorter but still fit snug in its case and I made sure the terminals could not ground out. Had to go with that capacitor because the original was discontinued best I remember

I could print another one, I didn't get the 2 mounting holes at the right angle and had to elongate the holes in the metal housing to make it sit level. Would you like me to try and correct that? The holes in the metal housing would probably still need some work
