Thanks for watching. This edger was put away in storage for a very long time and now it won't start. Of course the carburetor is the most likely problem however we did find something out that's terrible for this machine.

Great Video. I personally prefer those type of edgers. I've used string trimmers but because of my height I have to lean forward and after a while my back just can take it. With this type of edger its a lot easier on my back. One drawback is that curves are not all that easy to trim, that's when I have to go back to my string trimmer. But great video none the less.

Nice job: If those edgers. etc. were used by homeowners and not commercially, they may have very lilttle hours of use on them. I have a very old leaf blower that a customer gave to me and it sat and the fuel gummed up the carb very badly. However I don't think the engine has very many hours of use on it. Same as your edger. Worth fixing and getting a few bucks for it. Thanks for the video.

I have one like that. It’s not a waste of time to fix it. I think they work better than the stick ones. I tried using my weed eater with an edger attachment for years and it hurt my back and did not have enough power to cut through thick grass. Thick grass is no problem for that one. If throttle is not working right you may need to check the idle adjustments. The screw on the throttle control is for the high speed adjustment and one one the carb is for the idle speed adjustment.

I did a compression test on mine and I got 86 psi. And it has tons of power. I have a lot of 4 cycle equipment and I have never got a reading over 100 psi unless it was brand new. They range from 60 psi to 95 psi. If that engine has been sitting along time the piston rings may be partially stuck. It happened it me on an old Briggs and Stratton engine. I would try putting some fresh oil in it and run it a few weeks and the compression might go up. That’s a good edger, it cuts really deep. It’s better than the MTD ones, they don’t go very deep at all.

Great video. I like these big mama edgers, I have three, an earlier craftsman, an mtd, and a real old lawn boy. All are flea market-yard sale-estate sale specials. For me, they do an outstanding job, they will cut through anything, never run out of power, never seem to get stressed at all. I just do my yard, they might be a bit slow to use for professional use compared to the string trimmer type. My craftsman also came with a diaphram carb that was in very bad shape. I must have ordered a wrong part and got a fully adjustable float bowl carb, which once tuned works great.

We still have the slightly older, 2-1/2 HP model of that, bought new by my late dad in the early 80s. Since new, it would periodically start to leak fuel, static, sitting in his garage, creating a real fire hazard. He looped the fuel hose, putting a small filter and shut off valve in-line, securing it all with zip-ties. I still break it out and start it once in a while, but over the decades, the carb has always been the Achilles Heel on that machine, never holding its adjustments and a lot of pulls to get it started.

I have an edger attachment for my Echo PAS-2620 and I'm not really keen on using it as I have to keep it from kicking up. I would get a walk-behind unit but brand new they're pretty expensive. The entry level models are usually starting at about $500 Canadian and some can go into the thousand or more dollar range. These Tecumseh metering diaphragm carburetors I have seen used on Tecumseh's 2 stroke engines once used mainly in single stage snow throwers from MTD, but not on 4 stroke. Honda has a similar carburetor on its GXR120 Rammer engines as the vibration would probably cause conventional bowl type carburetors to malfunction.

Briggs & Stratton don't release official compression figures for their flathead engines,my 3 horsepower Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine runs o.k. at 75 PSI & I replaced the piston rings & relapped the valves in because the engine was burning oil,it has more power with the new rings,I fitted a new set of Stens cast iron piston rings but the OEM chrome faced set are still available albeit dearer. My point is a compression tester doesn't give an accurate reading when testing a flathead engine which is why Briggs and Stratton suggest doing a cylinder leakdown test. You might have an issue with the speed governor if the engine has one, it's probably worth fixing if you have it in your possession but they do tend to make them with a smaller & a lighter engine these days although a 127 cc Briggs and Stratton powered edger is still available !

I own this same type edger and use it a lot. I bought it new over 30 years ago and the I found the throttle label to be misleading. It has never increased or decreased the engine RPM no matter the throw position. It's either run or stop....has always worked that way on mine. If you check the linkage, it hooks to the governor arm which, on mine, barely moves, if any, between the lower most and upper most throw of the red throttle lever. That might explain it.

Hey Home Garage, I am super excited to ask you for advice. I unexpectedly got a 4-Cycle Troy-Bilt trimmer that hasn't been ran for years. There was no gas in the tank when I got it, the tank was dry, and there was oil in it. I put gas in it and after realizing the choke was on too much, it actually started up! I am shocked it started since it was just sitting for years, and it sounds like it has great compression too. But I need your help to fix a couple major issues with it. For one the kill switch doesn't do anything, so I have to choke out the engine. Secondly and more importantly the trimmer head does not spin at all, even when revving the engine to where it should spin. I unplugged the spark plug boot and tried to turn the trimmer head both ways and it just spins, it feels like nothing is attached to it. Also when revving the engine I hear the shaft inside spinning, which should be turning the trimmer head but the head moves freely around. I took it apart, which wasn't too hard and the kill switch is all hooked up so I have no clue why it isn't working. That trimmer head is the main problem however, do you have any ideas on the kill switch or the trimmer head that doesn't spin?
@HomeGaragechannel
@HomeGaragechannel 3 жыл бұрын
Sure, the kill system only consist of the kill switch wires and the grounding wire on the ignition coil. Either one of the two wires is broke somewhere, the switch isn't making contact internally , or the grounding wire is off the coil. Try seeing what you can find out with that information. More than likely either the coupling in the split shaft portion isn't engaging with the lower part of the drive shaft OR the clutch isn't expanding to make contact with the clutch drum.

I’m working on this exact edger with the same Tecumseh carburetor. Even after a new OEM carb kit, fuel still leaks out the air filter intake. I noticed the pointy part on the needle is protruding up above the carb body and it’s a little hard to install the metering diaphragm as it’s pressing up against it when I stall everything. Do you think that’s why it’s leaking because the needle is being pushed down into the carburetor body?

you'll only be guessing, we'd need the model number and the serial to find the right one.

Probably the only downside to owning this style edger is storing it; otherwise, they are great because they can cut nice and deep without the need of a steady hand or carrying the machine, plus most of them are built like a tank. If you buy even a good used one for residential use you’ll probably never wear it out. The “stick” edgers are easier to store but these pushers are less maintenance, in my opinion. I would go with a good used Husqvarna or a McLane.

@@HomeGaragechannel yes, I looked in Amazon, EBay, Craigslist and went to a couple of local lawnmower repair shops. The bolt is circular and is 1/2 inch in diameter. Amazon and the other sites have blades that look like a star. My blade looks similar to a lawnmower blade and is completely flat. Thanks for your help! The edger runs and works great but the blade has shrunk over the 20 years I had it.
