Craftsman R 110 Steering Fixed!

I fixed my Craftsman R 110 for under $20 and and 20 minutes of work.. Which for an old guy like me is equivalent to 5 hours hard labor.

Brilliant. There are many other YT clips that show replacing the whole steering mechanism---the parts cost $72.00. It seemed logical that if one could adjust the gear mesh, as you have done, the issue would be solved.

I just bought this lawnmower 3 weeks ago, although mine is a Troy Bilt, it's the same mower and the same problem. Debating on taking it back to Home Depot or fixing it. The fix looks legit and pretty easy. I am in upstate New York and every riding mower is sold out. So I doubt I would see a replacement this season. Thank you so much for posting this video.

@@justcrawling1916 I sent for the parts and replaced the original on Friday. It was simple and easy. Mowed the lawn on Saturday. Steering is fixed. Thank you so much for the video and the advice.

@@angt8560 I did buy the part and replaced it. It worked for about 2 weeks and then broke again. I was forced to take it back to Home Depot last year. They had it for about 2 months. When I got it back there was snow on the ground. I used the mower last weekend for the first time and it seems to be ok for now.

Repaired the steering on my R110 also pulled rear wheels and lube the axles ready for spring

I did the same thing . I bent the back plate that holds the rack gear like you showed. This takes the slack out of the channel where the rack gear rides and eliminates the pinion gear on the steering shaft from skipping along the teeth of the rack gear . I still bought a new rack gear but haven’t needed to even install it because removing the the slack by bending the plate fixed the problem.

I can't steer mine for crap anymore, I thought it was the actual steering wheel spinning on the shaft. I'll have to set some witness marks and try again. Thanks this video!

I would also put grease on that gear and bar to help slow down wear. I plan on buying one of these but didn't know how to take steering wheel off so it would fit in my kids Jeep. The seat removal will be easy. I see it's only held on by a cross bolt through the steering shaft. Thanks for the help. Great how to Vid. :)

I've got a R1000 which looks about the same and I had to replace the rack and pinon also. Lasted about 2 1/2 seasons.

MTD shares same parts for this mowers, Troy Bilt, Cub Cadet and like another three different called brands that make (or just rebrand) the same mower, being Cub Cadet the one that it looks more well done. I own a Craftsman brand, but wondering why it would be any difference on a brand new Gear and Pinion Craftsman from an MTD brand new too. I actually bought an MTD bagger that it fits exactly on this mower. Have done several upgrades already, like headlights, voltmeter display, cut-off gas valve, B&S oil drain hose, will install an hour meter too, just to try and make this mower more easy handling and customized.

It could be. I don’t use any lube on my rack.

On these steering gears do not use grease sand and dust will turn it into a grinding compound. I use wd 40 dry lube its like a sprayon graphite works great. Hope this helps someone.

I would like to know how you got the lawn mower tilted back like that and resting against a stool. Is it really light enough that a 73 year old man could lift it up at the front and prop it up against something to fix the rack and pinion on the steering wheel?

It should work depending on how much previous damage was done to the pinion

@@justcrawling1916 The pinion is fine it's just the teeth on the rack that seems to be the issue, I had mine replaced with the original and it's already worn 2 teeth down not even one season into mowing

My rack went bad fast.... like within 2 seasons or less...... I ordered and installed a new rack as my pinion gear was like new, I think the gear is made of stronger steel though. But from what I read .... you are supposed to grease the rack heavily at least once per season.... and I'm guessing they don't grease it at all when they assemble them..... I noticed in this video that yours seems very dry as well....... which can lead to much faster wear and tear. One question I have is .... now that my steering assembly is all back together (just as of yesterday) it seems to have slightly less turning tight corner ability ...... when you set your pinion into the rack did you set it pretty much CENTERED in the rack? Or did you off set the rack a bit so one side would turn sharper than the other side?

I have had my Craftsman RER1000 for about 5 years now and am already replacing my steering for a second time. I am very disappointed as I have also had the pully above the mowing deck go out ruining both belts, and made a mess of the other components under there.. I am about done as when I get the steering fixed if it doesn't last any longer than a year or two it will be down the road!! I live in North Dakota and only need to mow about four or five months of the year so this mower has been a big disappointment!

Ok, the thing that sucks about this video is you never show how to get the cotter pins out or how you lined the bracket and gear up to put it back in. The cotter pins are really hard to get to unless you take off the wheel. Sorry, but more information would be good.
