British singer and songwriter Craig David has spoken out about what it felt like "being bullied and ridiculed" by comedian Keith Lemon. During an appearance on BBC Breakfast this morning (Oct 4), the musician - who hails from Hampshire - talked about his new book 'What's Your Vibe' in which he opens up about the challenges he's faced over the years.
Speaking to hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay, Craig went into depth about the book and how people can expect it to include what life's been like for him in the spotlight. He said: "It was all about early days behind the scenes of some of those songs and how I may have been feeling behind the scenes, that there is human being and then there was the portraying' the life is great as a musician' and I felt that I really needed to unravel that."
He went on to share the past struggles his book touches upon, from 'being bullied in school and suffering from depression', to being 'bullied and ridiculed on national TV'.

I think people especially Craig just completely missed the point of Bo Selecta. The characters are all ironic, they are not literal representations of the people they are supposed to be, that was the whole point. As many others have said on here, the show was not about race, colour or creed, it was a comedy show, no more no less. The irony was that Craig was a cool garage/RnB artist from Southampton and the Bo character was a northerner with a pet kestrel, see the irony?! I was at a taping of 'Walk the Line', a UK singing competition in 2021 and Craig was one of the guest judges. He literally did not listen to any of the contestants when they were talking about their family or background. One of the contestants sadly had lost her dad and had dedicated her performance to him. Craig went on to mistakingly ask questions about her losing her 'brother', which became very awkward and the producers kept having to reset his takes. Meanwhile the contestants brother was very much alive and actually sat in the audience watching.

I don' think Leigh did anything wrong, in the sense that i don't think people identified the Bo Seleca character with the real Craig David, even though I can imagine it being hard as Craig to feel that was the case. I'm positive that most the fans of the show were/are able to differentiate between the the fantasy world of Leigh and the reality of Craig - the person and pretty fantastic all rounder...

'Bullying' is a rather strong term to use for a man in a rubber mask simply having a laugh, and at the same time, making others laugh. It's not bullying, it's a bit of simple fun. If Craig deems that as bullying, he needs to have a word with himself.

@@mikejandrews mate, I'm ginger. I was bullied in school as a result of my colour & skinny frame. I know what it's like to be the focus of weak minded people who's only achievement in life is that they can 'batter' a smaller weaker person than them. I don't think for one minute I was bullied for fun, rather that the person/s doing the bullying were so miserable at how their own life was at that moment in time, or that they were failing academically, they bullied those who were simply better than them. It was also convenient that they were bigger physically. As a 45 year old, I now feel nothing but pity for those 2 people who briefly tried to make my life & others a misery. Do I think they enjoyed it or found it a bit of harmless fun? Absolutely not! They didn't get any fun out of making another look & feel worthless. They did it so they could at least feel like they were good at something in life, even if it was punching a weaker persons lights out. Craig David is a grown man who took another grown mans harmless joke far far too seriously. He wasn't bullied in the slightest. In fact, Francis's joke helped increase David's popularity.

Another kind is where the bullies think they're just "having a laugh". I heard that a lot. I believe that many bullies don't really realise what it is they are doing, and in fact just think it's funny to dunk on someone. In relation to Craig David I don't care, but I object to your assertion that because it was a joke that means it's not bullying. And perhaps Leigh Francis was subjected to similar as you & I since he too has a ginger complexion, and so adorning rubber masks was his way of asserting the authority he did not have as a child against much bigger people. I think subconsciously we laugh at these things without perhaps knowing the underlying reasons behind the 'joke' Saying that, if it were true that Craig David had a pet falcon named Kes, suffered from incontinence, and had a strong comical Northern accent, I'd absolutely call it bullying. But, c'mon, has he really been teased to the point that he simply has to speak out about it at every opportunity? Me thinks the guy simply needs to lighten up a little bit. Life is indeed too short.
