I think the worst thing parents do is say "you can get a dog only if you can take care of another animal" like what's going to happen to the guinea pig or other animal when the kid gets a dog or a cat!?!?

I am a tween. I have 2 Guinea pigs. I watch you, Autumn, and Sarah’s videos. They have good pellets, hay, and veggies. Their cage is 12 square feet and their nails are well trimmed. I believe with proper help from the parents, kids can have small pets 😊
@Zoeclarke01
@Zoeclarke01 Жыл бұрын
Yes but like you said if you have "help from parents". Which a lot of kids don't as their parents don't do research on how to care for them or want to pay for vet bills. So they're still not a pet for a kid as all the financial responsibility is on an adult/parent.

This makes me very happy that you as a tween take care of your piggies with the help of your parents. We have two male piggies at home, me as the parent I am the person responsible for the well being of the piggies. My 10 year old daughter helps out with the stuff she can but I do the majority. You are very lucky to have parents that help and don’t think that animals are something solely for kids to take care of. I wish more parents would understand that. It is sad that some parents think kids can be solely responsible. Keep up the good work.

My daughter asked for piggies after she was caring for her schools animals, I made her research and ensure she understood what it entailed to have them at home and we waited a year to make sure she was sure. Initially she was really good but the wait was also so I could figure out whether I had it in me to care for them WHEN she got bored and as she’s got older, she did, they are my piggies now and I got 3 more from rescue so we have a heard of sweet treats, Mr Brownie (neutered male), Cookie, Oreo they were around 2 years old on the website I saw their names and it was meant to be as we had 6month old Sugar and Spice at the time. Everyone is 2 years older and while I wish I had more time to just enjoy them, I do my best and learned everything to care for them properly knowing it was likely my child would not want to do the hard work. I remind her daily of their needs as I want to in-still that responsibility but I knew this was likely going to be the case so I have always been hands on in helping her and reminding her why to do what we do for them, as the adults it’s my responsibility to ensure everyone’s safety and care.

On using animals to teach children responsibility. I had a Guinea pig when I was a little kid. About 7. Far too young to take care of it on my own properly. I loved it. But used to forget to feed it, because my mother wouldn’t allow it in the house. So was kept in the shed at the bottom of my garden. I remember coming home from school and only remembering to feed it because it was screaming out for food. I’m still traumatized thinking about it today and felt so bad about it for years. Im 52 now. But I realized it was my mother’s responsibility to make sure they were taken care of properly.

This. My grandmother (for some reason) got me a bird when i was eight. A BIRD FOR AN EIGHT YEAR OLD CHILD. Can you imagine? She’s still alive today at 22, but my grandmother shortly after getting my bird got HERSELF a bird that would live about 50 years. She’s 80 now. Both birds are still alive but they’re in serious need of more attention, new cage (their current one is the right size just super funky) and more enrichment. I’m hoping one day before my quaker passes away that I can get her that. (She’s 12 ish years old now, iirc quakers last 10-12 years. But i’m not sure 100%). Because of my rats I don’t have any room in my room to put them nor do I have the money to get them all the stuff they’ll need. It’s a struggle to face the consequences of your families’ choices. 😢

I saw one on Craigslist months ago that I couldn't pass up: they were living outside in a birdcage on soaking wet cedar bedding. I took them in, a boy and a girl-- girl was preggers. They both had foot issues that cleared up nicely once on the correct bedding. Sadly, baby didn't make it, but! Momma did. SHE'S SO SWEET TOO!

I wish I lived in the USA as you seam to have more Choose of toys for your piggys than we do in the UK. I got my first piggy in 2021 after been in the house for a year as in UK if you had a health issue you where told you could not go out, I was going to bed at 2am and not getting up until 12 the next day. So I said to my husband that I would like a guinea pig (I am 59) so he bought me one then I found out it was best to have two so I did. I have just just lost my first one. And that help me with my mental health as I no if I don't get up my babies will suffer But i have learned a lot from you, autumn, and Sarah . Thank you ♥️♥️♥️♥️

It's a beautiful community. I don't ever plan on getting pigs nor do I have any, I'm 100% here just to learn. I absolutely love all animals and I like to educate myself on all animals. I absolutely love love love learning new things about any and all animals. I just like to be knowledgeable about them even if I don't plan on owning them in the future. It's not that I don't like them, I just know that I don't have the time to give them an enriching life that they need and I recognize that. Thank you so much for the education! It is greatly appreciated 😊

@@peekaboocockatiel6514 birds definitely take a lot of time and energy. I personally have 3 cats and a dog. My dog(14) and one of my cats(18) are very elderly so between keeping my younger cats(3) entertained and my older pets from leaking all over the house, I definitely have my hands full. My older pets are getting to the age of not being able to hold their potty long enough to go where they need to go to relieve themselves so it's been challenging but I'm exploring all of my options and trying new things to try and keep it under control.

i don't think any child can own and solely take care of an animal - i think it's extremely important for a parent to step in and help take care of ANY pet they purchase "for their child" because children just aren't responsible enough. it can be a good way to build responsibility over time, but the kid has to show true interest by researching beforehand so they know what they're getting themselves into. an animal is not a toy for kids, it's not an activity, it's a breathing and living creature that deserves happiness and unconditional love! thank you for rescuing these lil piggies :)

I rescued a piggy about a month and a half ago. She is such a personality. Thanks for the info on piggy care. The first thing I did was clean the dead skin from her ears, check her bootie to make sure there was no stuck pooples, and give her clean fresh bedding. She is now starting to outgrow her little fishtank cage and is ready to graduate into a big girl cage. I think the person who had her got her as a baby. She is growing fast. I look forward to your rescues. I used to live in the town that the bridge went to that you went over to get these piggies. Thank you for doing what you do.

Something I learned the hard way was to get either the oxbow vitamin c (they come in large pellet form) or the child life/ child safe vitamin c. One of my piggies ended up having his teeth moving around, and had to get his teeth trimmed under general anaesthesia which was super scary. You can never give them enough vitamin c.

1 of the two first piggies I ever rescued passed away before their first vet appointment... and it was really hard. I blamed myself for a long time, and so did my boyfriend. Thebpast owner did them sooo dirty. In the end though, we should have realized we gave her the best life we could with the time she had left. We still have the 2nd piggie from that rescue and we rescued another piggie in which they created a strong bond. Sorry for the life story 🤣 This experience just made me realize how mistreated they are until rescuing a few of them because my bf loves piggies, and now I do, too! I am so happy you make these videos to show some of these things are just part of the process sometimes, and know we do our very best. Your heart is beautiful. It sounds like you were already caring and responsible when you took on pet ownership - well done! I think the problem is when parents just think of an animal as a training tool and get it for a kid who doesn't actually have the maturity to be totally responsible - and then the parents leave the animal totally in the kid's care. Like it's ok if the child messes up and it's a good "lesson" for them...but meanwhile the poor animal suffers. Kids can be the most EXCELLENT pet parents! My middle schooler keeps our foster kittens in their room and does many difficult things to get them healthy and socialized. (But in the end...I'm the adult and I'm responsible.)

The topic about kids and having their own pets as a method for "responsibility" you brought up reminded me of a childhood friend of mine who wanted to have a dog for her b-day, her dad had her water the plants, they didn't have animals just plants lol, change the soil, provide sunlight/ fresh air, to make sure she would do the same for the "dog's " basic needs like any other pet. then around her b-day, her dad said he has a surprise outside for her. As everyone's headed for the backyard, he's telling her to remember to provide water/food, and fresh air for this surprise and once he opened the door, it was a apple tree, no doggie. But non the less she and her dad planted this sapling and all the while she made sure this tree was well loved and cared for, got a few apples from it at least. It is definitely easy to overlook another living being's needs but with the right guidance it is possible. I had my first pet a cat which always picked on my mom's older cat giving him great distress, he was surrendered but adopted right after. Then a dove when I was 12, my mom had gotten a book for dove care from the pet store for me to read, NOT ideal! He was the last one who was sick we found out. I cleaned his cage everyday, made sure he had fresh food and water with my mother's watchful guidance. The cage was less than ideal along with those plastic perches at the time, he had a mirror he didn't care too much for. Also a dust dish so he could bathe but he preferred the water one! I came home one day to learn he had passed on for the better life. I also had a betta fish also too small tank from another pet store, but he was fed and daily water changes he lived for 2 years! We had later fish as well, but the "security radiation" from the doors at the pet store had hurt them as we passed, but our snails and moss balls survived... I have no current pets but if I do later on, for their sake and mine there will be more deep research. Thx for the lovely video as always. ❤❤❤

I rescue cats and I’m disgusted how people mistreat them because they’re small & cute and relatively easy to maintain, so mom/dad thinks it’s a great “teaching experience”…..no. They get older and not cute and they (all) lose interest. The same thing for Guinea Pigs! I have 2 and they are still a lot work & they really do need a lot of attention. The girl was taken from a backyard breeder and she was pregnant when she was only 6 months old.she had to get a c section because she was so tiny the baby was the size of her. They are both now in a big cage with great care❤

I love watching you help all these piggies! I'm actually 12 with 2 piggies! I always make sure they have enough vitamin c, hay, pellets, water, they love their new home! they didn't have any hay or pellets before.. but now they are so happy! they have a big cage, I take good care of them snd I clean their cage every day :) to be honest, it depends on how the kids personality is and if they know the proper care or not, I love all your piggies! ill be ordering from your store soon :)

This is what im thinking.Im 13 years old and honestly i think time has changed.Now in 2023 i feel as if teens or nearly teens in ur case are alot more mature compared to kids in later days . I am thinking of getting piggies for christmas and i have had them before.I have learned from my mistakes from my previous piggies(as we all make mistakes the first time).I think there is alot of responsibility with piggies but all kids are different.some kids are real animal lovers (as i have had 2 gerbils , 3 guinea pigs and i have a frenchie currently) and they never stop loving animals.Whereas some kids just changes there interest so much and as soon as they see the cuteness of a guinea pig they just immediantly want one.Some of the best piggie owners are from kids and its kind of just the trust in the pig world that us kids will be mature and responnsible and look after these pigs.

Austin, I love what you do! I recently found your channel and I'm watching everything. From your videos I am thankful that my 2 boys get along so well. They are a 6 months apart, but I've had them for 3 years. Beans and Chili are their names. I also have a chinchilla named Steve, but we recently lost Steve's buddy Roger. I have been looking at fleeces and decided to make them myself. A bitch is broke. So I asked my mom to borrow her sewing machine, but she went ahead and bought me my own. A Singer 4311 heavy-duty. I am ready to spoil my boys. And thank you for inspiring me.

Hi, i am from Germany. I realize the standarts might be different here. What I know is that according to newest research 3 guineapigs need a space of 3 squaremetres or more. You shouldn't keep less than three, otherwise they could develop behavioral disorders. For every additional guineapig you should add 1/2 m2 (The cage in your video is 1,9 m2, if it is exactly 3ftx7ft) They should have one hideout with multiple entrances where the whole group can fit. (It doesnt need walls, a tiny table does the trick) They should fit in there lieing without touching each other. And they should have as many smaller hideouts as there are guineapigs. A lot of people here build enclosures in their livingroom out of 20cm wood barriers. They put wood litter and straw just under the houses. / hideouts. For the floor they use old sheets. Some even have a full room for them and store food etc in higer shelves. I know that for rescuing so many you cannot live up to that standart. You do a very good job raising the standarts for others. Ant those rescue cages are emergency accomodations, and even as that farbetter than where the guineapigs lived before. But maybe you can alter Your piggie room and let them have the whole floor for example. Rise the standarts even higher and show people how much needs to improve. This is a link to a calculator, which tells you how much space how many piggies would need. It calculates less than the original 3m2 for 3 guineapigs. But far more than your cage for the initially 9 females. www.cagecalc.de/size.py?lang=eng&conf=guinea If you use the translation mode, here are a lot of valid infos about guineapigs, up to "german standarts". We also have to hope this will be standart here once. There are lots of guineapigs in cages without any running space here, too. As were mine, when i was a kid. diebrain.de/

carton boxes with 2 holes would do as a hideout, too, you woud just have to change them more often. They are so expensive to buy.

Another reason why some may not know, what a crested pig is, could be that they are not native speakers. Like most young people are quite fluent in english though their native language is something else.

I remember when my little sister took her (now ex) friend's Guinea Pig, her friend told her pigs eat ONLY lettuce and to put vitamin C drops in a water bottle. Needless to say Cookie (the Guinea Pig) died a few days later. They were teens at the time and we didn't have the means to look up proper care. I still feel bad for Cookie, may she be resting in peace.

I think pets can be great for children, and they definitely can learn a lot from them. But it's important to remember that the animal is ultimately the parent's responsibility - to make sure the child is treating them right, and to make sure they get everything they need. If you want to encourage your child to do the work, fine, but if they can't or won't then the responsibility falls on the parent. I honestly think a dog can be a great pet for children, but again, so long as the parent steps in where necessary. But I think they can offer the most learning opportunities and enjoyment, while also being quite study and hard to accidentally injure, if you get a sturdy breed. Or if you want something that's not much work, get a Royal Python.

EXPIRED means it’s best SOLD by that date. At most it’s a little less potent Than originally . It’s not a magic date when the stuff suddenly morphs into useless goo! You are doing a great job! I had Guinea pigs for my kids for years. They helped me care for the animals, but I did most of the real “chores”. I actually enjoy cleaning cages! I read everything I could about cavey health, and nowhere was HAY mentioned! Most books said pellets were a complete diet with some raw veggies. Later I learned about hay!

So I am a mom, I did actually get a guinea pig for my daughter to try to teach her responsibility. HOWEVER, I did so, knowing that I would very likely be taking them on myself. It is important as a parent to realize that making a living being suffer for our children's mistakes is not ok. If you aren't willing to take it over then dont do it. I still was able to teach my daughter by grounding her from the piggers. If she wasn't going to take care of them, then she could not play with them. That was enough for her. Of course there was much reminding and nagging. That is part of having a child. I would also recommend not having the animal in the child's room. I recommend having it in a common area so that as a parent you can monitor easily as you walk past the enclosure to see if they have water, food or a clean cage. That way if reminding is needed then you can be on top of it. So while you are teaching your child to be responsible, it is also important to be responsible yourself. Just my 2cents.

Hi I’m 12 and I have 9 guinea pigs and I watch you, and lots of other Guinea pig owners. I have 7 girls and 2 boys the girls are in a 3x6 cage and they also have access outside through the day on fresh grass. And the boys are in a 2x6 & I also pay for everything with my money I get from birthdays and Christmas. I also love everything you do

Parents who get GP for their kids to teach them responsibility but then don’t teach them how are doing it wrong! I have 2 boys, 5 and 3 year olds and I got them piggies to teach them responsibility and care about someone else then themselves. Now it is not their responsibility to look after the piggies!! I do all of it! They see me, watch me and think it is super cool. They ask to help and get involved and see how it gets done. And this is how they learn!
