Totally awesome job 👏 Couple suggestions. Mag wheel polish for the pontoons. Also think about getting a used trolling motor for the bow, kind of a poor man's bow thruster. Help with current issues. Keep it just in water to avoid trailer

Looks Great. Seemed to go down the river just fine. Hate to say it, but polishing the inner pontoons will give you less water drag, and theoretically, help that little 40 horse. Great job. Keep 'em coming.

Awesome...watched all your videos Brandon and your an inspiration to this 63 year old fishing widow.....who loves a good project. Have a couple of questions.....does it make a difference if you water proof the boards that you use for the foundation of the boat.....? Would spraying some kind of water proof sealant make a difference? And you said the motor was splashing water back up into the area......where the motor is connected....how do you determine what height to place a boat motor? Good job.....do you know your final refurbishing costs?
@WoodGuy2 жыл бұрын
Dad here......no need to treat the underside, you'd be hard pressed to find a pontoon builder who does. Besides, it's so dry here in Bullhead City AZ (around 7% humidity) that you could hose down the underside of the plywood and it would bone dry in minutes. The pontoon was over 40 years old and had the original plywood. The seats will rot out within 10 years or sooner and you'll probably want to replace the carpet as well, so it's kind of a waste when you can replace the plywood and carpet when you decide to get new seats.

@circomnia99843 жыл бұрын
Great job, well done!! Just one maybe stupid question, maybe I missed it in one of the videos, but on that last shot at the bottom of the boat it seems like the wood on the bottom is still completely untreated. I remember you treated the top with that red plasticine paint, but did you at some point treat the bottom of it too?!?
@BrandonsGarage3 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh no, the red guard is like $60 a gallon.
@circomnia99843 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonsGarage But...did you use something else to protect it from the water then? I mean, I'm pretty sure you said in one of the first videos it was not marine ply. So what keeps the water from slowly soaking in from the bottom? I'm so confused. I think I missed something. I can't imagine it's still just untreated ply at the bottom.

Good job. Looks great. I’d like to know the total cost of the project. Whether it was cost effective than just buying a newer boat.

In Canada in 2016 I bought a used 2003 Princecraft Pontoon boat, 50 HP 4 stroke motor and trailer, built-in gas tank and more but it cost me about$14,000 CDN. I looked at a lot of boats on Kijiji that needed a lot work, before I found this one, but If you are handy you could get them cheap.

Do you treat the underneath plywood? Even some waterproofing?
@WoodGuy5 жыл бұрын
Nope, even the manufacturers don't treat the underside of the plywood, here's why. If the boat was manufactured say, on the east coast where it's really humid and the boat is shipped to say, Arizona where Brandon is, you'll trap that moisture, not good. By doing what Brandon did, coat the top side where water will be absorbed by the carpet, it can't get to the plywood. The underside not being coated will allow the moisture introduced to escape quickly, especially in a climate he's in where the humidity hovers around 6%. Moisture will evaporate very quickly in a climate like that. It's why you never want to buy pine furniture that carries a natural internal moisture content of about 14% and put it in Arizona or a desert climates where it'll dry out that natural moisture (again, not good) and your furniture will split apart. When you live in a climate like Arizona you want to buy hardwood furniture because it's internal moisture content is around 6 or 7%. Hope that helps.

Brandon, what length boat and how fast does your 40hp push it? I'm running an old 40hp Evinrude and only able to get 10mph at WOT on a 24ft pontoon. Any suggestions? Possible timing advance or prop pitch? Have enjoyed watching your rebuild and congrats on getting it back out. Enjoy!
@TheSoloAsylum5 жыл бұрын
24' pontoon with 40hp? Holy crap. Suggestion: Buy a 115hp engine.
@cup_and_cone5 жыл бұрын
Pretty underpowered unless you are just sticking to a somewhat sheltered lake. What pontoon is it? Hull should have a powerplant rating...
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
115 max. Cant go past 1/2 throttle, the water starts splashing into the boat. Have to keep it past half way. 40 HP can move the boat just fine, assuming your engine is in good condition, have the right prop, and can give it more throttle. With my speed here, I could tell the engine had a lot more to give.
@jafran74075 жыл бұрын
Get a tach see what its rpm it's at full throttle should be at 5000-5500. Most pontoons or heavy boats over 1500 lbs on a 40 hp wont see 15 mph with a 10 pitch. Could be your activation plate depending on if you got a short or long shaft motor.

I have a covered area for my boat but there is a huge stump to be removed before I can get the boat in it. Have 5 stumps and will cost 1300 bucks so will need to wait till next year for now. I cover it and put an air dryer in to keep the moisture out.
@Grippy_Squirrel5 жыл бұрын
Drill a couple of holes in the stumps... Pour some Kerosene in them for a few days... Covering them up with saran wrap... Letting the Kerosene soak into the wood... Then light it on fire down in the holes... Keep a low slow burn...
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Thats what I was thinking. Even a stump grinder is only a couple hundred to rent for a day.

I don't remember you putting ANY paint or sealant on the bottom/underside of the deck. Neither have you even mentioned that? THAT has got to be remedied - IMO! Congrats! - tho!
@gregwein14 жыл бұрын
I am so glad you asked this question! I’ve been wondering since the second video but he didn’t put some of the red waterproof paint on the underside of the plywood. Or at least a couple coats of exterior latex paint… Maybe the plywood dries out pretty quickly in that desert air?
@WoodGuy2 жыл бұрын
@@gregwein1 You nailed it! With the average humidity in Bullhead City AZ being around 7% your spit dries before it hits the ground. Not only that but that pontoon had the original plywood (just regular exterior grade) that was over 40 years old. The seats will rot out long before the decking does. The reason for sealing the top side was because the carpet will hold water speeding up the rot process making the carpet look junky. So sealing the top side was to keep the carpet looking good for a long time.
