@MrJdsenior
@MrJdsenior 3 жыл бұрын
@@RxYouth I'm sure it happens all the time. My guess is he gets frustrated more with the lack of understanding the realities of making a profit in business people like that fellow demonstrate. I think it's cool with him either way. His business never depends on one item, and people don't seem to understand if you double the prices on something selling it as a retail middle man, you don't make even CLOSE to 100% profit with selling costs, like the store rent or cost, employees, etc. Most sellers of new items operate at about that return ratio, and many go out of business doing it. The other model is sell a kajillion dollars worth of stuff a day at 20% mark up, like the Walmarts, Costcos, Home Depots, etc. of the world, and that works too, apparently. What sucks about those large outlets is they almost NEVER carry specialty items I could buy in my local family owned hardware store, because they don't move enough to make them worthwhile to sell, so there's that. Thank god for web sellers.
@RxYouth
@RxYouth 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrJdsenior oh I know, I'm a reseller myself, I know exactly what's going through Pete's head, and I don't fault it for him in anyway, the guy acted like his item was the holy grail and I don't think he realizes that Pete would probably barely break even after all is said and done. You just rarely see Pete get so frustrated and detached that he didn't even look the guy in the face towards the end of exchange and I found it kinda funny that you could tell Pete was over it, over the item, over the guy, and over the transaction.

That is so cool. I went and looked up my father in law's records from WWII, he was missing in action as a pilot from a downed B24 in the European theater, Poland, for three months and was assisted to freedom via the Polish partisans. After that, if he ever saw a Pole that needed something he would help them out, sd he absolutely knew he owed his life to them and said they took GREAT quite possibly, and not terribly unlikely, deadly risks moving him out. He was once in a haystack the Germans were spiking with a pitch fork, but luckily he was deep enough to avoid the tines. Scary stuff. He basically lived on potatoes out of the fields and wouldn't touch one for years afterward. Decades later he was making delicious things like Pomms de terre Dauphine, so I'm glad he got over it. Thanks for putting out the info, William.

As far as I know measured IQ of 250 is virtually nonexistent, I expect it would be practically single digit numbers. Hawking's was 160, and this guy's is more like 100-105, if I had to guess, best case. Likely I'm guessing high. Anybody with an IQ of 250 is NOT going to walk into a room, announce that fact, and then start prattling on like a maniac about complete nonsense. That guy's got some serious problems. I'm not sure I would make eye contact with him, frankly. I would not want that dude in my shop. He sounded like there might have been some seriously illegal substances wandering around in his body, as well. "The first person who says a number looses".. or wins, actually, depending. But what he is saying has some truth in it. I've never heard that before, but it's funny. Here's one from Calvin and Hobbes: 'You know it's a good compromise when everyone walks away unhappy." I just 'love' it when people walk in with their stuff and want eBay prices for it right now without any of the hassles, work, and 'holding on'. Kinda doesn't work that way. My guess, in many cases, although maybe not this one, I always suspect someone has come straight from a garage sale where they paid 10 cents on the dollar, maybe not here, but usually, and want .80/$1.00. And ya gotta give him credit for the "I'll buy it back if you don't sell it". Not a great idea, but better than none, I guess. LOL I guess he thought having it for a display in a space you pay money for, to make nothing out of it, was going to be a positive thing.

Pawnshop: Why you think it’s worth so much? Guy: It sold on eBay for that much Pawnshop: Everyone’s thinks they’re an expert cause of eBay Also Pawnshop; Checks prices on eBay

Haha, fair point, although I find most sellers are looking up asking prices, while the pros look up actual sold listings

Yeah, I get the joke, but why wouldn't he? It's one of his selling channels. Also, I've found just because one 'something' sold on eBay for some price does not necessarily mean another buyer will come along for that same item at that price, especially if you want to sell it within some reasonable time frame. That sold item may have been in that seller's inventory and on eBay for years, and having something on ebay for years is non profitable. The other problem is, just in case you don't realize it, people lie, or are honestly mistaken. Also, they tend to look at asking prices, and that means absolutely nothing. There are people asking prices on eBay that are ten or a hundred times what they are worth. Just go look, you can find stuff that should sell for $20 on there all the time for $200. I guess they're just waiting for a sucker that thinks something is worth what you pay for it. I've heard that frequently from people, utter nonsense, often. There's always some 'super duper claim' like 'first one ever made' or 'one of a kind'. Maybe true, but likely not. And 'provenance' is easily faked to sell to many of the uninitiated. I suspect there are paintings and sculptures all over the world shown in museums that are very very good forgeries. I just saw a guitar, that wasn't much of a guitar, for 67 thousand bucks. I sure as hell wouldn't but a two hundred dollar guitar for that, 'provenance' or no 'provenance'. When you enter that regime, I suspect there are at least as many scams as true claims. If you find the one of this series on knives, you will see one expert say one knife the shop had was real, and another walk in and show him five reasons it wasn't. Given that, how much chance does someone who knows little to nothing about the type of item have determining worth? I sell things like vintage/antique typewriters on ebay for usually, two times the standard going rates, but I REALLY clean them up and get them working very well, pretty much like new. Then I put a video showing the operation including typing through each key and all of it's functions working, and guarantee it to work like that on arrival. I usually sell them quickly, have never had one returned (although I replaced on that got broken in shipping, an electronic that a function went south in transit, and worked on the pre shipped video), and have gotten a few emails back gushing about the machines and how nice they look and well they work. There are legitimate reasons you can get more, but if you work out what I make an hour cleaning them (it is a long tedious process) it becomes obvious it's a work of love, not profit. I feel like I'm helping save a tiny bit of history, and some I get are basically junk to begin with, virtually NOTHING works on them sometimes.

I emailed privately with the name and street address of an individual who I believe is the nephew of George Hartman. No longer in the Chicago area. The more I think about it, the more confident I am this is correct. Hope he responds.

I kept trying to pay attention to the negotiation but kept nervously waiting to see if the call on hold ever got answered!! I seriously could watch a live feed in the store, all day long!! Don't get me wrong, I love love love the uploads and work put in to editing and probably capturing some of the more entertaining interactions, but 10 to 20 minutes just isn't keeping me satisfied!! And yes, you can enter a "That's what she said" right here!!

Dude with the box of bills tried to be so sophisticated in writing a number down, then says the number out loud immediately after writing it. Pete will never lose saying a number first. He's in control over the purchases. If he doesn't like your offer, then have a nice day. And go get a decent haircut for goodness sake.
