Grinding out sub-par welds... hand filing "unimportant" edges... filling and filing gouges... I'm glad you hold yourself to a higher standard. It will serve you well in life! As will that beautiful grinder. The video and commentary is great as well despite the pace you had to rock through those parts! Keep up the great content

Magnificent work. It's funny to see someone using different tools to do what a belt grinder could do, while building a belt grinder. Having a belt grinder makes building a belt grinder easier.
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks 🙂 You may be the first person to mention that, but it was firmly in my mind throughout the building process. Having the belt grinder will certainly increase capabilities/speed in the workshop, when making more of this sort of thing. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍

@CraigsWorkshop

Thanks. I just came up with the idea, and thought why not give it a try? It tidies up the external appearance and I think I'd use it again. Doesn't add too long to the build. In combination with the internal rebates/steps it makes assembling the tube easier (so long as you don't have a gas line problem like I did)

Great job, looks amazing! Now the question is, will you mess with casting in order to make your a diameter contact wheel?
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Ah - easy answer. No - or at least - not for a while. I've got my finger in a few too many pies (hobbies), so I think I need to rein that in a bit. I want to double down on learning machining and improving my welding for the time being. I've got a few machines to restore, and some more building works around here, and some tools and fixtures I'd like to make. That's going to keep me going for the next couple of years of spare time I think. I'd like to make the small wheel attachment for the grinder, and also the tilting table - I have seen that I can buy an import contact wheel fairly cheaply (perhaps pull the bearings and put good ones in) - so that might be an option too. Thanks for the comment mate. Cheers, Craig

Beautiful work Craig, love the cut outs for weld idea. I just finished my J.S. grinder 3weeks ago, and absolutely love the way it preforms. Curious about your thoughts on belt training handle. I am thinking a fine thread would have been a better choice. Had a little issue with adjustment backing off.
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Thank you Jerry that is very kind of you 👍 I found that backing off issue too, and in my case it was a tiny amount of vibration allowing the screw to come undone slightly (which quickly makes a big difference to tracking). Yes fine threads would improve the tracking control, but for me, a dot of blue Loctite added enough resistance to make the handle stay where I put it, and the backing off has not been an issue since. Good luck 👍

All the little extra touches make for a machine you can be proud of, and do good work on. Great work well presented. Any comments on Jeremy's plans? When I saw the squared cut-out in the platen I wondered if a tilt mechanism might have been more versatile. Is this an option you decided against?
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Russell. A tilting table is on the list of things to make. I bought his extra plans too, for bigger and smaller wheel mounts (to entirely replace the platen) and the tilting table, which is going to be a good option. I thought it would be interesting to use the machine to make these future upgrades - and make a video about - killing two birds with one stone. Demoing the machine properly, and adding to the machine. As for his plans quality: they are absolutely perfect. Such high quality, and easy to follow and well laid out, but not the cheapest. Absolutely worth every penny though. It makes the process idiot proof. I just printed all the pages, and stuck them into a cheap binder thingy to make the pages a bit dirt resistant and that was my reference for the last several weeks. Wouldn't have any second thoughts about buying from him again if something else interesting comes out. Thanks for watching and commenting - everyone's comments/support is very encouraging :) Cheers, Craig

Sorry Vandelay is who I meant. He speant a lot of time working out some very small detail. I got him and the other one mixed up. I think your sander/grinder will last you a very long time.

Thank you for an interesting build vide! I'm subscribed, but this one seems to have slipped through the cracks! Anyway, I've been looking at the same problem. your motor is 1450 rpm, US current is 60 hertz, or 20% faster so the equivalent is 1700 rpm. I don't know which version you've built, but Jeremy's first version used a 3500 rpm motor, the second a 1700 rpm three phase driven with a vfd to be able to "over speed to get up to correct belt speeds. I have 50Hz mains here in France, my motor, like yours is 1450rpm, in order to get the belt speed right, I'm using an 8.5" /215mm drive pulley. My motor is 2horse power which is considered to be the smallest normally usable! All the best Matthew
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Yes you are right about the motor. I used what I had on hand that would let me finish the project for the deadline. I will find a 2-3hp three phase motor and add a VFD some time soon. That will help a lot with the speed issue and give me tons of power headroom. Thanks Matthew. If you press the bell notification near the subscribe button you will get notified of all videos in future 👍 thanks!

@@CraigsWorkshop Well, I've been following you for years, and this is the first time I missed one ofyour videos! Might I pointout that if you buy a new 1450 rpm motor, running it at 120Hz would give you the right belt-speed! Personally, running a new electric motor at 2,4 times faster than it's rated speed! I would suggest a larger pulley to get the base speed up, the 20% difference, especially if you use a secondhand motor, which might not take over speeding. Another thought, I am looking at using braking resistors on the VED to slow down the motor as the larger pulley size is going to act like a flywheel !

@@MatthewTinker-au-pont-blanc One thing I have never worried about is overspeeding motors. If you look at the 2 pole vs 4 pole motors they are constructed identically. Same bearings etc. And low down torque is useful on a lot of machine tools. So am oversped 4 pole motor is my preference. 👍

@@CraigsWorkshop New modern motors built for VFDs yes no worries, I am wary of older motors!

Yes good point. Some of those have plain bearings and so on. I tend to look for ones which are semi modern at least but have never had a VFD specific motor. Always used and bought locally for cheap 👍

Hi Union - it's a CIG machine (inverter style), but really any machine will do just as good a job in the end. I just used DC to weld, with no pulse or fancy features for any of these welds.

I hate the hand work… 😂. But I liked the video anyway! Thank you. I don’t understand how the weld chamfers eliminate the need for spacers. Could you explain?
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the comment. Sorry, the chamfers don't eliminate the need, but there are rebates that I have made, which do. The rebates have shoulders set at defined widths, meaning I can clamp the four pieces together and the inside dimensions are precisely set. No need for the filler piece and shims. Thanks 👍

@@CraigsWorkshop are you saying we don’t speak English? Sorry! I worked for an English company for over 20 years and I find some of these subtleties to be very fun. I have given and taken a lot of ribbing. You made me laugh with the comment but I am super impressed by your build and learned from watching. I have all the parts cut out for the same grinder and have been too lazy to get it finished. Your video was both motivational and informative.

In a way the video was meant to be a bit meta - showing how hard it is to make stuff without having access to a belt grinder. I realised too late that it was going to be too hard to work that in, in limited time, without it sounding arty farty. But yes - quick shaping jobs will be a lot quicker now. I'm stoked. Come and get the grinder when you drop off that 6 jaw :)
