If I did another video on the lathe some time soon, covering things like installing the quick change toolpost, coolant pump, and so on, would anyone be interested in that kind of thing?

Absolutely mate 👍 I have an old (1997) AL960B and I’m in the process of replacing the motor. Bigger frame…. so I’ve had to do the same trick with the motor mount. Then had to ‘chop ‘n channel’ the rear guard because the motor pulley had moved rearward. I’d love to see your continuing upgrades. I also added…. A lead screw cover; a taper turning attachment off an AL1000C, & moved the threading dial to the front of the apron. Regards, Robert (Sydney).

You and your electrician appear to have the same taste in clothing!😂 I recently upgraded my lathe with a 3 phase motor and VFD. I really like the ramp up start function. The old single phase was quite savage when it started. I think it put a lot of load on the gearbox and belt.
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Agreed. This slow start was one of the features I liked for two reasons. First is it is easier on the lathe mechanics, and second it is a soft load for the house electrics. Allowing me to run a bigger motor (3hp) that I would otherwise be able to do. Even small motors can draw 10s of amps when starting up normally.
@gangleweed
@gangleweed Жыл бұрын
@@CraigsWorkshop Yes, that's true.....the house mains will take a beasting if you load it with a 3 HP single phase motor....ask me how I know......so I fitted an electric clutch to my lathe, gleaned from a car's air conditioner drive......that allows the motor to keep running and I can switch off and on frequently without blowing the mains box.

I have the same exact lathe. Not really a bad machine although I’d really love a Clausing Colchester. What you did to upgrade the electrics is great. Sadly my shop doesn’t allow the room to get back there unless I rig the whole machine forward. Not impossible just too much time to take away from my huge lists of projects 😂 enjoyed the video. One idea though on your centering device for tapping in the mill. Maybe you’d consider making it a spring loaded point. That way you don’t need to keep bumping down the quill. Just a suggestion. When marking the motor bolt holes (where you didn't have good access to use a punch); I find fixing normal masking tape (painter's tape in the USA) on the target area helps. It can be written on with pen or pencil, and also provides a soft uniform surface which can be marked easily with a scribe or hand held punch.
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Thank you Paul. Masking tape would have been a definitely improvement. I'll keep that in mind. I also just bought one of the pica pens, which robrenz recommends. They are a marker with a very slim tip which can reach into narrow featues and get right up against the edge of bolt holes and similar. So I have a few tricks up my sleeve now for next time this crops up. Thanks again - good to have you watching and posting good ideas. Cheers, Craig

Thanks John, it'll be a great lathe for me. It was a good price (Funds are limited), and the things on it that needed a bit of TLC or replacement, are things I can do here with the gear/skills I have. The new motor is 3hp, which I think will be ideal. This style of lathe came with a 2-3hp motor depending on where you buy it from. They have been making the same style of Taiwanese lathe for a few decades now, under lots of brand names. Thanks for your comment. Cheers, Craig

The Premo looks like a much higher quality lathe than the 14x40 lathe.
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
You may be right, but the Taiwanese lathe is great in its own right. In some ways I am trading some build quality and machine condition for more capacity and modern features, and fully metric. I should mention the other lathe I have too: Emco Maximat V10P which although is the lightest of the three, is the most precise - and is in pretty pristine condition. I've got the 14x40 for bigger jobs which need coolant, and a bit more horsepower, and the Emco for delicate/precise jobs that need some finesse. The Premo was reasonably good at both, but having the two dedicated lathes in future, will give me the best of both worlds. Don't forget I've had the Premo for several years and it's considerably better now than when I bought it. I will bring the 14x40 up to scratch too. Thanks for watching.

Well for a start it is Austrian! 😂 And the pics showed it in a very dirty neglected condition, but amazingly under all the dirt and grime, it was very unworn and will be a great lathe. Screws etc are basically as new - basically no backlash - and not because it has been adjusted out.. This lathe will get some motor and VFD and DRO attention too in a future video, but one thing at a time. 👍

IIRC Keith Rucker has done a "make and fit a gib strip" video, but I think it relied pretty heavily on a surface grinder
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
I am recently hand-scraper enabled in my workshop (I invested in a sandvik carbide scraper, which will definitely outperform the home made converted-file I had before). I think that's the gold standard for gib fitting. So I could mill to get it close, and finish with scraping. The gib is really working fine as is, as a bearing surface. It's just missing the slot to control its adjustment properly. So, I am also considering tig-brazing a piece of steel onto the end of the existing gib, and then shaping it, so that it does not rub on any of the important surfaces.

is the foot break "fail safe" - you want it to be normally shorted so that if eg: a wire breaks, you don't have a broken break.
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
You are right, I do want it to be failsafe. But, with the VFD I have, it is a circuit closing, that initiates E stop. So I have to work within its limitations. If I were designing the VFD, I would definitely incorporate a fail safe, at least as a programmable option. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Craig, first lathe buyer here, I've tried to search for this lathe after watching your video but could not find it, do you suppose you could give me a link to buying it? i also wanted to say, if money was not an object, what lathe would you buy if you would intend to use it for decades onwards?
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for your message. First up, I would definitely get a smaller lathe like a myford, emco or South bend/hercus as a first lathe if I had not used any other lathe before. This is my fourth or fifth lathe and I started machining in about 2017. But this model is very close to an AL1000D I believe, from Machinery House here in Australia. If I were looking for a new lathe which would last for decades, and with money being no object, probably a big Colchester! I expect that will always be a bit too expensive for me though, so a new AL1000D would still be a very good option, and would last for decades. Any lathe will last, as long as you look after it properly. A lot of lathe choice comes down to what size job you intend to do, and how many convenience features you want. Thanks, Craig

At which point did the cost of the inserts you used up trying to reclaim the scrap exceed the cost of the new material? 🙂
@CraigsWorkshop
@CraigsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Quickly! I am repeatedly learning that I am a sucker for falling into the false-economy trap. I keep thinking I want to use reclaimed materials, then I accidentally go through a screw in a piece of reclaimed timber, and all savings are lost (in the time spent swapping and then sharpening thicknesser blades, for example). And it's the same with using pieces of reclaimed steel that either have holes in them that need welding closed, or braces welded on that need cutting off, or deep rust, or paint that needs stripping. It quickly becomes a loss, particularly if you want a video-worthy end-result. But I am slow-of-brain so I keep playing the game. 🙂 I will learn eventually.

They seem to be the go-to default for professional machinists that want a new, good-value lathe. There is a definite quality difference between the cheaper imports and the Taiwanese.
