I stopped watching movies about 15 years ago. I used to go to the old theaters that played independent matinee films. I absolutely loved going every Sunday afternoon. They were closed down and clubs replaced them. It broke my heart. Life was getting busy for me at the same time & I didn't take the time to find other avenues. I also moved out of the city and far away from film festivals. Regrettably, I think over time I have cultivated the belief that they don't exist anymore. Your movie & your wonderful introduction has reconnected me to spirited film making that has respect for humanity. I was deeply moved and had a good, healthy cry at the end. Thank u for ur generosity🏵 I look forward to seeing and supporting your work.

Marcus, Oh my word, what a wonderful re-introduction to this incredible masterpiece of yours. I believe this is my third viewing of Pap & Sons, and I just want to press replay, but it's 2:00am here in LA, so it will have to wait till later today. This is such a beautiful, uplifting, fable/fairytale of a story, which is strengthened by the knowledge that it is actually based partly on your family history. It is a slice of movie magic. I am eternally in awe of what you achieved; it is Herculean. So beautifully realised from your writing, to your casting, direction, and your immense team of collaborators. It tugs on the heart on so many levels, not least the wonderful pairing of Stephen and Frankie as father and son. To tis day, I don't know why Ed is not a megastar; so charismatic and such a fabulous, versatile actor. So thrilled to have rediscovered Pap & Sons, and loved the behind the scenes film. I do hope you have another feature planned. CONGRATULATIONS!!! 🎬🎭🌟🥳💖🍾👏👏👏👏👏🤗

@@marcusmarkou Honestly Markus, you nailed it with Pap & Sons. It's everything a movie should be, and harks back to the days when British cinema was a force to reckon with, creating movies with heart and soul and imagination. Those movies do still exist, but they are far and few between, having to make way for the fare the Hollywood moguls want them to make. You are such an immense talent Markus, please don't stop. That aside, I trust that you and your family are well, and business survived these ongoing pandemic years. We are both well, thank you. We are heading over to Europe (And, I include Britain under that umbrella), next month for a break and to cogitate over our next move. 🥰

Thank you so much for making this movie!!!! It does indeed have deep massive heart!!!! That's really the most important thing...that it tells a story about people in an authentic manner, not a manipulative 'tear jerker' but an honest account of life. Obviously, this could be so many ethic groups...it's has moved beyond a "Greek story" you guys gave us OUR story...it's universal!!!!....every immigrant will recognize each scene, each event: the lost childhood innocence, the internalization of trauma, the prison of an internal story (pathos) .... the scathing hyper-critical striver, the rise of conciousness and awareness and ultimately forgiveness rooted in a devine Agape Love. This story is now for all people and, once again, we have the Greek people to thank for the gift of wisdom. So, thank you brothers.

Love how you have shared everything for the benefit of the community. If you had to make the film again with half of the budget, or a quarter of the budget, where would you try to find the savings?
@marcusmarkou3 жыл бұрын
If you halved my budget then I'd halve the locations. So maybe I'd set the entire story in the chip shop and Id reference the life they used to have. Then you'd be able to cut some characters... Nanny P, the door knocker, his factory, the awards etc. And bring everything into one location, the chip shop, with less characters. More like a stage play.

@marcusmarkou5 ай бұрын
Hi there... Thank you so much. The key to filmmaking is really story telling. And I wanted to be an actor and was happy to be a writer but found my way very late in life making films (at 40). If you look at a lot of directors they start quite late. My advice is to just keep telling your story - as it evolves. So write, blog, take photos, take improv classes and hone your story telling craft. Whether that ends up in film making or novel writing... my feeling is that you will have more interesting things to say as you get older - once you have lived more, had setbacks, learned more about people around you but also learned more about yourself too. So my advice is tell your stories. And that starts with observation. Keep a diary. Keep a dream diary. Write a blog. Write short stories. Then see where it takes you. It may indeed take you into filmmaking but it may take you to somewhere you never even imagined. Contact me in 5 years time to let me know how you got on. You can find me on Twitter. Just screengrab this and remind me. And lets see where you are then... Marcus

Congratulations on such a great film Marcus. I really enjoyed your introduction. How did Stephen Dillane get cast? Are you planning on making another movie inspired by your Greek heritage? Also, why did you dedicate the movie to Elliott Kastner?
@marcusmarkou Жыл бұрын
Hi. Very tied up at the moment! There is a KZbin video somewhere that has Frank Dillane talking about his Dad and him being cast but Frank was key to it. His son in real life and S wanted to make this because of his son. Not planning anything else "Greek" currently. Elliott was a dear friend and (as all who knew him) a catalyst and inspiration.

just wondering, what was ur primary method of capturing audio? (e.g boom, lavalier) + any tips for directing amateur actors?
@marcusmarkou3 жыл бұрын
We used a sound recordist who worked with two boom operators. My advice on directing amateur actors is that there is no substitute for craft and technique - which is what professional and trained actors bring. If you are working with untrained actors then you need to be prepared that you may not get the same thing twice. You may indeed get spontaneity but you won't get actors who will know how to work on repeating that. So shoot "loose" - so maybe handheld, so the camera operator effectively improvises the shots handheld. Always shoot what might normally be the rehearsal. And perhaps shoot a silent take. That means, do one take where the actors don't speak but play out the scene with you directing what is happening. This will be very useful in an edit.

For me it's a different kind of education.. it's like we are looking at someone's life, created somewhere, thinking what I would have done if I was at that place n all you know? I know I'm talking too much here 😀 i loved your film n it has a light feel n transforming.. Spiros will be my most most fav character 😘 you killed him🥺 i thought no no he would live n in the end he will be there,.. What a ruggedly handsome man, full of life, the moment we see him, the surrounding changed in to happiness you know 👌🏻.. i would take home Spiros 😘.. all the photographs i loved with the song.. in the photo also the last picture of both the brothers 😂 so different.. one smily n other so stubborn.. Ahh.. thank you Marcus .. it is dedicated to Elliot castner.. i hope I'm little right about this name.. i wanted to Google it . Cuz this name is also a story you know.. and I'm always hungry.. Stephan is Stannis baratheon 😍 game of thrones wow.. Big name.. 👌🏻Spiros i have seen him in my fav film Not without my daughter 👌🏻i loved that film, the tention in the film about religion and how they got out..everything, i saw that 3 times.. anyways buddy i wish you a huge good luck ❤️ for your next project.. you are a story teller 👌🏻 you are having your own something which will stay with you life time, you can create the world you know.. Marcus .. we will be in London..i mean me and my husband for our second film project 😍.. and if possible we should meet at that shop.. or and where..
