Thank you. We need all the thoughts, prayers, and support we can get right now. The communities of Dundalk, Sparrows Point, and Edgemere are devastated. I took the bridge twice a day for 14 years and I crossed it not even 10 hours before it collapsed. I have never spoken with people on social media before but I can honestly say everyone's support has really helped me get through this.

The ship was cleared by the port officials to leave the port, so it was kept up to international standards. Accidents can happen and the ship is insured, but the US implemented some liability restrictions on shipping companies after the Titanic accident, the shipping company just follows US legislation, nothing more or nothing less

@@philster6383 I was at a cheezy motel once that was taken over locally from what was once a chain. It had a pool. There was a handwritten sign on the door to the pool. "No Lifeguard. Swim At Our Risk." I told the person at the front desk about it. They probably didn't even fix it. Leaving that one letter out could be a field day for a lawyer. @fart63

There’s really nothing that can be done, there is no accountability to hold. The ship was having malfunctions, and it wasn’t the fault of any of the crew. Maybe we can say the company that owned the ship should’ve been doing more maintenance? But there’s no way they would’ve known it would crash into a bridge let alone destroy the bridge immediately. As for the bridge, it would’ve been great if it was more stable, but it was also built in the 50s or 60s and obviously back then they wouldn’t have prepared the bridge for an impact with something that size. So overall, not much accountability to hold here.

When a new bridge is constructed surround each pier between which ships pass with what is tantamount to an oval-shaped island of rock and soil about 200 feet long in the direction of travel and 100 feet wide. A coffer dam on the perimeter makes placement easy. A few piles driven into the seabed extending into each mass provides even greater stability. Material for each island dredged from the seabed benefits the channel. Relative to the cost of the bridge this is an inexpensive and effective solution that will prevent piers from being dislodged when bumped by the largest of container ships.

My issue with the whole mess is if traffic frequently goes by, why didn’t they do something to protect those supports. If it was so easy to knock down, they should have been thinking ahead, not just reacting to a tragedy. It seems too many of those are happening. We employ and pay large salaries too people and a functioning government should be on top of things like this. We have too many people in these positions that just collect their charity and are not doing their job. Back just a few years ago, people would be held accountable for the negligence at some point. That bridge could have easily been filled with cars on it! Our Government is too concerned with pronouns vs. what their real responsibility is.

You are dreaming. It took 7 years to design and build a new bridge over Tampa Bay after it was knocked down by a ship in the early 1980s.
@roseanneroseannadanna9651
@roseanneroseannadanna9651 Ай бұрын
@@WesB1972 This scenario is dif than the Tampa Bay one. They don't have to redesign or rebuild the whole bridge just the channel span. And the Tampa Bay Bridge was a double span thus the remaining one was able to do two way flow as they completely designed a brand new bridge, (better looks as well) Channel span is not as long, not as high as Tampa. And from what I can see the the northern bridge support pier is solid. And if the sub structure of the southern pier is stable all they need to do is build new support pier. I could be wrong on the rebuild time as they may decide to design and build a completely new bridge! I doubt it though. But to be sure the debris removal will go a lot quicker than most people think! The main focus in all this will be clearing the channel so port ops can resume. The bridge is a local use bypass and not super critical to interstate 95. On a side note google map shows no span on its map now!

maritime law unfortunately heavily limits liability in cases such as this mainly to the value of the ship itself. In this case the ship is not worth much. Its owners are out of Singapore so good luck squeezing money out of them.

Tug boats or a basic barrier systems on the bridges legs. Bridge was built around the same time as the sunset bridge collapse due to a ship strike that killed like 36 people and this bridge for 40 years never got retrofitted with a barrier system. It’s 50’ deep water, it’s would have taken 6 months and less than $100 million to drive sheet piles and build out a barrier. Instead we’re looking at +$6 billions for a bridge.
@venom4597

Every port has different rules for tugboat escorts. For extended tugboat escorts it costs shipping company money. Ports are in competition for business so they may cut tugboat escorts short to attract more ships. It definitely needs to looked into I think. Also last I looked the cost to build new bridge there was 600 million not 6 billion. Unless it has changed.

Salvaging the container ship will be a multi-step process. Besides off-loading the containers and removing the ones with hazardous materials, the dirty fuel will have to be pumped out of the tanks, then the hull might have to be repaired if a bridge beam ruptured it. If the ship is seaworthy-enough, it will have to be towed to a shipyard where it can be repaired - but then you really can't risk having it sink.

Why did the ship lose power? There should be system redundancies built in. Can’t afford to lose a bridge and lives with every cargo ship that veers off course. Tug escort may need to be used if ships can’t stay on course. Eight miles per hour with that tonnage is tremendous impact value to destroy any thing involved.

Tears are lovelier than a smile When they come from those you love As they seek relief from sadness When you're summoned from above. A bridge design that widens the channel and mitigates the risk of a collision would be ideal. It depends upon how quickly they need to restore the highway. They might even build a temporary span while they build a new modern bridge alongside the old one, then dismantle the old bridge. One thing is certain - when the federal government is involved they’ll never spend $200 million on a project when they can spend $5 billion
