In the distant past Harley Davidson ported the crankcase vent to the primary chain case to lubricate the primary chain between the engine and gear box. There was a drain at the back of the primary case where excess oil and moisture would drain. If your Harley Davidson was not leaking oil and dripping water under the bike where you parked it you had problems.

You are the most awesome technician out there. Your videos are thorough and easy to follow. I bought my 750 aero already partially modified, and they actually installed the filter. This is my first time cleaning/tuning the carb properly in almost 3 years, so the filter was very clogged and had seeped oil all over the carb, frame, wires and hoses. Thankfully all of the seals are in tact and surprisingly none got on the engine. This actually shows how efficient these bikes are: aftermarket straight pipes and air filter system (cone style), and I even went on to remove the baffles from the exhaust. Ran for almost 3 years without properly tuning the carburetor. She’s still a beast. Now I will be honest - without proper tuning and re-jetting, I actually lost about 10-15 mph top speed (115 max to 105 max on the best of conditions), as well as fuel mpg (approx 117 miles full tank to 97 max hwy only). But I got lucky and haven’t run into any problems until just recently. I can start the bike just fine, ride it as long as I want, push it as hard as I want. However, after it sits for a while, when I start it up, it’ll start just fine, then slowly die as if it still needs to warm up more (after about 30 seconds to a minute), and it will not start again. It acts as if it’s starving for fuel, but I can smell the gas, so I’m thinking it’s flooded. Then when I go back the next day, it starts up perfectly as if it never had an issue. Actually stranded me at work one day, as I drive 40 miles to work. Ride fine there, wouldn’t stay started in the morning when I got off. Had to call for a ride. Went and picked it up the next day and it started with no problem. I’m currently cleaning the carb in an ultrasonic cleaner as I type, and have ordered the performance jet kit as well as the velocity stack. Didn’t realize I needed the block off plate, so I will have to order those and install them another day. Thankfully I can go with the hideous option temporarily while I wait. I’m hoping this will fix my problem and give me my speed back. Now I just gotta find the video that explained which ports I can and can’t plug on the carburetor...

When I was younger, I learned the hard way when I deleted the airbox to not block it off. Oil everywhere. Smoke off my exhaust from oil splash. I had to wash my bike with a degreaser to clean it all off - and then I had semi-persistent leaks from the valve covers till I replaced everything - Definitely a bad time! I ended up putting 2 plus 2 together and figuring out I had blocked off the CCV. Kept the factory vent system and put a filter on the top line that goes to the airbox. I've deleted everything since and just made a road draft tube, But I like the idea of a chain luber. Good advice here.

I've got a 2006 VT 600 that idles fine but has no acceleration and bogs when I ride it. I bought your kit including the fuel filter, and removed the fuel cutout valve and most of the emissions except for the head reed valves. I left them and plugged the hoses. Do those reed valves need to go completely?
@45calGunslinger9 ай бұрын
I love that Honda had the idea of including a catch can for the crank breather, then installed it in a way that GUARANTEES it never actually drains out the intended hose, and instead all that oil continues back into the airbox and deposits oily residue on the throat of your carb 😑

Trying to do minimalist style removal of the epa shit for now is there a way to plug the reed valves that sit ontop if the head? also if removed all or most of the stuff your talking about is there a way around re jetting? Bike runs pretty decent id rather not open the carb again just yet.

I'd like to ask a question that isnt covered in your video: Where does the second hose from the back of the breather box lead to (the higher one comes from the rear cylinder, the lower, second one (that black hose that is cut pretty short in your video) leads to where exactly? I'd like to reassemble the bike and have no idea where to plug in the second strong hose (it came with a fixing clamp on the end, so it was mounted somehere before) The original mainenance manual just states that it goes into the airfilter housing, but there is no connector. The pics in the manual just show that the hose in question goes somewhere downwards but doesnt show exactly where :-(

that hose goes to the air filter base. It sucks clean air.

Awesome video. Very informative. I wonder if this issue is what is causing motor oil to spew out of the weep hole at the clutch slave cylinder on my 1996 Honda Shadow vt1100? It appears, and I believe, the oil is leaking through at the clutch pushrod where it enters the motor at the clutch slave cylinder. Note, it only leaks (spews) when running, then of course minor dripping after shut down. Any thoughts?

i cant really diagnose via youtube but it kinda sounds like you already pinpointed the issue. start taking things apart and see what you find.

Hello TJ, I have a Honda Steed 400 '96, was wondering where would be the crankshaft breather be? coz right now I see it's in front and not sure if it's different from a 600. I did try inserting a straw just to see if the hole is blocked but the straw went in deeper. My guess is it's open cause if it was not the cams should have leaked. Bought it 2yrs ago and have been using it for Sunday rides. The rear cover has no hole. Should I be worried that it was placed wrong?
@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS7 ай бұрын
i think you mean crankcase breather. it should be on the rear head cover. you can confirm by removing the head cover and youll see that the crankcase breather port in the head lines up with the passage in the head. on one head, theres no passage, on the other, there is.

So I'm pretty new to working on my own bikes n I just watched this (for prob the 5th time lol) n I'm glad because some guy B4 me had the crankcase breather blocked. But my question is I took off the engine heads n painted them and I don't recall weather they r correct seeing as u just said they will bolt up just fine but it's very important to not switch them. Is there a way to tell whether the front is front back ECT???

Have any recommended piston and rings part numbers for a 1986 Honda Shadow VT700C...? Apparently, back then, Ronald Reagan put heavy tariffs on imported Motorcycles over 700cc to protect Harley Davidson and Honda manufactured a sleeved down version of the Honda Shadow 750 hence Honda manufactured the VT700C for four consecutive years and called it the tariff buster (the unofficial but popular name). I haven't found any reference to VT700C cylinder/ piston and ring parts in any vendor reference online or in forums. Was wondering if any other Honda 700cc internal engine parts are compatible. Fortunately, the VT700C I have in my basement has only 15,000 miles on it and upon breaking it down everything seems to look good except the dried up varnish and dried up brake fluid. My Dad was the original owner and left it behind. It sat in a garage its whole life. No internal rust or pitting except some mild pitting along the edge of the clutch slave cylinder that might be okay because it doesn't seem to extend beyond the seal... hoping that will not have any leaks after a new piston and rebuild kit but if it does would I have to get one machined if I can't find a used one in excellent condition? Also, there's no reference regarding a clutch pushrod seal in the service manual or anywhere I looked. Do I have to make my own seal for this? It would be the seal that the pushrod slides through on the slave cylinder end...

This is a great idea. Totally noobie question but The way this is addressed on cars is using a catch can. Could the same possibly be done on a bike but on a smaller scale?
@santi95323 жыл бұрын
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS haha how could I have missed the fact the stock setup is essentially a “catch can” haha! I’m so foolish! I was more concentrated on how great of an idea it was to have it consistently lube the chain up haha it’s genius! On a side note, are bikes the same as cars as far as needing a aftermarket ecu in order to have it tuned? I have a honda shadow i would love to tune but I’m totally new to the bike sector as I am more familiar with messing with cars which I’m seeing is essentially very similar in build/tune aspect. Love your videos man, I learn a ton and are very entertaining! Keep it up!

The only thing that concerns me though, is that the breather pipe hanging there open to the elements. Couldn't humidity or dust and such, end up inside the crackcase in this situation? On the other hand, you've got the muffler pipes that of course are connected to the exhaust ports in the motor. The difference being that the breather pipe leads to the sump, where all the oil is. Would like to know your thoughts on this.
@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS Жыл бұрын
No. Theres not enough suction to pull something alll the way back in.
