Hello is the diafragma in the ccv stuck in the open position ? So the intake sucks alot of air ?
@ReCverin
@ReCverin 6 жыл бұрын
There are lots of smart asses posting comments here, but this is a very useful video that shows what to expect when diagnosing the CCV valve membrane/diaphragm failure. A slight vacuum is normal, but this extreme vacuum is not. CCV failure is a lot more common than many people think; on the models listed here as well as every other BMW manufactured since the early 90's, as well as the VW 2.0 TSI, and I'm sure there are others. P0171 and/or P0174 are common. Other symptoms can include whistling/screeching/howling sounds of air being sucked into the crankcase, sometimes through the oil filler cap or valve cover gasket, sometimes through the front or rear crankshaft seal. On a VW 2.0 TSI, this problem can, and often does, pull their stupidly designed, cheap rear main seal loose, meaning you have to drop the transmission to repair the oil leak. This has also occurred on BMWs although less frequently. There is a TSB describing replacement of the front or rear main seals on certain BMWs era 2009-2011 due to CCV failure. Thanks Bimmer Zeit, ignore the smart asses.

Thanks for the helpful comments bud, I appreciate it. Yes, it is good to mention that this CCV failure is a common cause of the P0171 and P0174 codes. On this car the vacuum was so strong that it put hairline cracks in the valve cover, further leaking air and causing lean codes.

when buying a used one with no history of maintenance you must methotically replace everything and start a new history, Thats why you should get it dirt cheap. you should turn your own wrenches and get INPA or some software to monitor its health regularily. They are attention whores and high maintenance but they also perform!!! if you're into gassing up and oil changes only, they are not a good car.

+BIMMER ZEIT You're right, it's a right bitch of a job. Very time consuming and fiddly, but I left this particular one in place. Basically, you block off the dipstick return pipe, install a bit of 1" pipe from the rocker cover where the VANOS is, put in a reducer to 3/16, and the run that pipe to a catch can. The return pipe from the catch can then goes to an outlet that is normally blocked off on the inlet manifold right near the firewall on cylinder 6 (this may or may not be on the m52 engine) It works very well, there's not much that can go wrong with it as long as quality parts are used. All in it cost me about £50 (~$70?), and half an hour to install. For those reading with a similar CCV problem, at least you know there's a couple options. This video is spot on at diagnosing a faulty CCV, thumbs up!

I replaced it last year, and i think it just blew the diaphragm out of it, the car started smoking pulling out at stops, checked the ccv and it was covered in oil. I'm done with that valve, going with the catch can, why bmw put that stupid valve in that location is beyond me. Did you just block the hose going to the fuel rail? I was thinking of using that one instead of the one on the back of the manifold.
@CableWrestler
@CableWrestler 8 жыл бұрын
+D rigo Yeah, I blocked those off. It took a little while to do. I think there's 6x T20 bolts holding it down. A gentle (I mean gentle) bit of persuasion with a crowbar precisely placed underneath it and the manifold, working from the front of the engine to the back. Eventually it'll pop off, make sure the grommets don't come off. There's 2 outlets on the piece we just removed, that can be used, but I think they're fairly different sizes. The reason I opted to go for the manifold and not the fuel rail section is that it's far easier to get to for maintenance, you'll have to block off one of the two outlets and that you would have to use the old connectors, put together some weird bends, and then that's before where you consider the routing of the vac pipe. Don't forget to block off the oil return for the sump either. I can't remember if I said that previously. It can't be accessed easily from above so... The passenger (UK) or driver (US) front wheel removed. Then it can be seen and worked on through the inner wing/undertray. You can just cut the pipe, shove a fat headed and equally suitable girth (giddedy) bolt in the pipe, then put a pipe clamp on it.

Another way to do this is to put a glove over the end of the intake boot and blow into the brake booster hose with the oil cap both on and off. If the CCV is working, air will come out with the cap off, but not with the cap on; if air does not come out with the cap off, the CCV is blocked.

So, why the ventilation system doesn't work correctly? I think, this is normal becayse when you take off the oil cap and the idle and rpm of the engine change, and the engine is turning rough, this means that the CCV valve is working correctly. On the other hand, if you take off the cap and don't see rough on iddle as change the rpm, it would be a bad CCV valve. (I mean the opposite of your work. Please explain me minuciously this part of the CCV calve) Regards from Spain!!

@Tonil875
@Tonil875 4 жыл бұрын
@@HowToDoitright The crankcase ventilation system works under vacuum, which means that when there is an air leak (considering the CCV valve works well), the engine starts to vibrate and the idle is unstable. In contrast, when the system is clogged, the engine loses power and consumes more oil, and idling is also unstable. To check the CCV system, when you quit the oil plug idling, it is normal for the engine to shut off.

On my M57 diesel the vacuum is a lot weaker, as normal for a turbo diesel engine. One can open the cap without particular force or hiss. The most important thing to look for on M57 engines it the health of the PCV filter/separator, located on the top of the head cover: it often gets clogged (because of poor manteinance), increasing the pressure in the crankcase, ultimately leading to turbo failure due to lack of lubrication. On the other hand, if it breaks, rue turbo can start to breathe oil drops, leading to failure. Keep your PCV filters clean and changed, I do mine every 10.000 km. Regarding vortex filters, I received mixed opinions from friends with the same engine, therefore I prefer to stick with the classic cotton filter and increase manteinance. No issues so far (230.000 km).

@@BIMMERZEITT I think this is bullshit, if there is no vacuum and rev drops that means, the intake cannot suck air(oil gases) from cylinder head and crankcase YOUR CCV WORKS BADLY. If your CCV is good working when you remove the oil cap it has to have a little vacuum, not big as you've seen in the video, just a little vacuum. And your engine has to drops rev a bit, because the intake manifold get some unmeasured when oil cap is open. The MAF is among the CCV intake hose and air filter.

Whats the normal behaviour it should be for the oil cap? In my case i have very, very mild suction and when i remove the cap the engine doesn't get affected at all like if i didn't remove the cap .. I believe i have vacuum leak some where, already changed all intake hoses/boots. next i'm thinking to do the CCV. I'm getting misfire codes plus fuel trims range exceeded.

Thanks for the info on CCV issues. In the video I saw the coolant tank filler cap on left side when facing the engine and windshield fluid tank in left firewall box. I have only seen that configuration twice and wonder if It is a stock option on 330 CI. I was hoping that I could improve performance on my 330 CI by replacing the air filter box by changing configuration to match what I saw on video. Is the air flow significantly better on your engine than my standard oem 330 CI air flow system. I only want OEM components not after market non stock parts.

BIMMER ZEIT hey man so to answer you question, no it did not have a high idle previously but it did have and low idle. When I turn the car on it idle around 1300 rpms for about 2 mins the come back down to normal and I drive away. If I didn't drive away right after the idle came to normal it would want to stall but doesn't. Did my homework checked around and found : The tube that runs from the bottom of the ccv to the oil dipstick was completely broke in half. And there was also another tube that was cracked badly. I think it was the one that ran thru the manifold. I also changed the upper and lower boots I forgot to mention that. I was really thinking after I replaced and cleaned everything my cars was going to run super nice. It did not! I was really was hoping it was something stupid that I've done. I took it apart and put it back together 5 times now and every time I still get the same results. I do have a video of my issue I'm trying to post later today. I built a smoke tester and I'm going to try that today see what I get. I will be sure to let you know how it all goes, thanks.

I guessed and just changed the purge valve solenoid. One has to remove air box to get to it. It's a pain anyway because of the last hose that connects can be a big problem to remove and put together right. I erased the code and then got these bank codes along with a fuel level low code misfire......where my fuel was running very low. Now, I wonder if these new codes are simply me NOT connecting the valve right? But then I thought why wouldn't the P0455 just pop back up if that were the case? I'm sick of this darn car.
