The ending is so devastating as he thought he was saving his child from a fate worse than death. Nothing in the movie gave him any reason to think he was about to get saved by the Military. My dad and I went to see this in theaters in a full auditorium. Usually there's always those few people that are immediately out of their seats once the credits start but there was a good 15-20 second still silence in the room. Like, you could feel people processing it. Lines leaving was similar to a funeral procession, wasn't much chatting from people, just everyone leaving quietly. Didn't expect such a powerful ending going to a movie about a town swarmed by monsters.

I feel your pain at that ending, believe me! LOL! It's a real gut punch. This is such an underrated film. It's nice to see more people discovering it. Interesting tidbit: Darabont credits Jeffrey DeMunn for the reappearance of Melissa McBride's character at the end (along with her two children), showing she'd made it back to them and they'd all survived. Originally, she was supposed to disappear into the mist, with her fate left unknown. But McBride's performance in the grocery store scene so impressed the cast and crew that they gave her a standing ovation. Darabont said DeMunn later came to him and said he couldn't stop thinking about her performance and wondering what happened to her character, so he suggested bringing her back at the end. Also, when they were casting the role of Carol in TWD, they called and offered it to her without requiring an audition, due to her performance in The Mist.

I thought it was so cool, and his account of it has stuck with me ever since. Her presence there at the end is like a double gut punch when he sees her alive with her children. You know he can't help but wonder if his son would also be alive if they'd gone with her to begin with. (Of course, it's perfectly understandable why they didn't, but it's still a terrific twist upon a twist.)

How do you manage to crack me up during one of the grimmest, darkest films ever made??? Every death scene here is devastating, but I think Pvt. Jessup's was the one that really effed me sideways. It wasn't the most graphic or heartbreaking, but the realisation that the main cast was no safer inside the store than out...the purest nightmare fuel. Stephen King is known for his secondary antagonists, but with Mrs. Carmody, he REALLY outdid himself.

The director changed it, and Stephen King himself, a vocal fan of Darabont's revised ending, described it as "the most shocking ending ever," and said, "there should be a law passed stating that anybody who reveals the last 5 minutes of this film should be hung from their neck until dead."

Despair leading to people clinging onto any shred of hope, even at the cost of other peoples' lives, and then that despair is taken to its logical conclusion with the suicide pact. I saw this on premier night in cinema and the whole crowd, myself included, just sat back in our seats in silence at the end. And Darabont’s adaptation actually improved on King’s original novella.

Yes the take away is have Faith and keep going like the lady leaving and not staying with the masses with false beliefs or even the faithless like the suicide pack. When I first showed this to my friend Annie at her friend Alessandra house the two of them asked me to pick a movie so I asked them have they seen The Mist cause it was the recommendation on her streaming service, they were amazed and alessandra said wow very good choice Johnny. We had the lights off and nice size flat screen with rain outside perfect conditions to watch. During the big monster scene Annie was lost in gaze at the movie and the first thing she said when seeing the colossal creature was emphatically "someone needs to close that dimension window" so yeah watching it with someone's first time viewing is great

Its interesting. I'm a Czech guy living in Prague in Czech Republic. A half world away from New York. Yet we bot know the same references about Walking Dead cast, Stephen King, Marvel etc. We are both millennilas I presume and I find it fascinating to see the similarities. Our time 2021 is very tumultuous, but its also wonderful. To see other people enjoying the same things we do and also get their honest opinion is a gift. As a filmmaker I appreciate it very much. Thank you for this reaction Alanda, because you made me think

Interesting fact (as a TWD fan): the actor who portrayed the unfortunate soldier who was "sacrificed" *murdered* played another soldier - he was the dead soldier in the tank with Rick in Season One's premiere episode. Frank Darabont had originally planned to have a whole back story featuring the soldier, but it was scrapped. As always, thanks for yet another wonderful reaction video. Take care, and stay safe. Funny story, Frank Darabont came up with that ending. The original Stephen King short story ended more ambiguous, and he went on to say he wished he had come up with that ending himself.

I hadn't seen this since it came out, I didn't realize both Andrea and Carol were in this too! And frankly, "too realistic" yeah I agree, stories about raw, unprocessed human nature are nothing new, King added this spin on it back in 1980, and it's unsettling to continue recognizing all of this behavior so clearly. A different fun fact: King admitted that Darabont scared him with his own story, he got the creeps a few times and that hand on the window made him jump in his seat 😄 I LOVED Marcia Gay Harden in this, I thought she devoured that part and left no crumbs, and for me, Mrs. Carmody is hands down the scariest monster. I've known people just like her, they'll take every advantage to convince people to believe their twisted perspective. One of my favorite roles of hers was in _A Gaudi Afternoon,_ she's still devious but WAY more fun.

Almost everything in this movie is the same as the book...except the ending. The book ends with them still driving from town to town, scavenging supplies, and coming to the realization that this is just the world they have to survive in now. Very hopeless. They created this new Tragic ending for the movie and Stephen King loved it. He was basically like, why didn't I think of that? lol. Great reaction.

I know you’re a fan of Laurie Holden. She also plays a big role in the 2006 horror movie Silent Hill. Highly recommended watching and reacting to that movie. It’s based off a super famous video game series and has been named the best video game adaption movie up to that time 2006. Edit: I read a few articles after I posted this comment. Turns out Silent Hill had been considered the best video game adaption movie until 2019 when Detective Pikachu/Sonic came out (even then it’s close). So that’s pretty neat to find out, as I love Silent Hill. I really hope you get to react to it and give us ALL the commentary that we live for!!!!

As many others have probably already said, this was not King's ending - although he said he preferred this ending to his in the book. The ending of this movie completely destroyed me. I'm a father of a 4 year old daughter and cannot imagine how this must feel. All I know is that I wouldn't want to go on if something happened to her - more so if I did it to her myself. An absolutely brutal ending that always turns me into a wreck.

Watching this from an American viewpoint, I can't help but see the similarities of the Mist to a current pandemic, and how opportunistic selfish people used fear to divide everyone in the supermarket to the point of wishing their neighbor's death. It is exactly like the many opportunistic political figures in American politics today. Hopefully that is were the similarities end, because the the ending to this movie is the most devastating ending I have ever seen.
