Crankbait Fishing Below the Dam - Surprising Fish Catch! (Realistic)

I was fishing with a crankbait below the dam, and I caught a surprising fish! I actually caught three of them. With a baitcaster and a Cotton Cordell Super Spot crankbait, I managed to catch three nice gar. I caught two of them in the mouth, and one in the tail. I had no idea Gar would go for a lipless crankbait. The walk down to the dam can be a bit tricky but the long walk was worth it. I still cant believe I caught three gar on one trip. If you have a chance to fish below a dam, maybe try a lipless crankbait and catch a surprising fish like a gar.

Gar tend to hold onto stuff until you get good bend in the rod, either to aggressively attack with the infamous lure slingshot technique, or to just find out they don't want it lol. Usually have good luck with Beetle Spins on them.

I seen a guy take some white cord and frayed it out and hooked it on the end of a buzzbait and whenever he would hear them thrash the water he would cast in that general direction and the Gar would attack the buzzbait and get it's teeth Tangled in the frayed cord and he would land them like that, it was fun to watch. He was fishing at night when their most active. Thanks for sharing the video.

@@RealisticFishing that's why we would get you a fishing backpack, so you dont carry anything. I use one all the time and I have my forceps on a lanyard around my neck for easy access - we have a lot of pickerel here so they are a necessity at all times.

Just some tips when catching gar are have a rag on hand to grip them, pliers, and you can step on theirs head and use your pliers for unhooking them and the rag to grip them to toss him back. But great video keep up the great work.

Great vid Alex. I have heard of people using a white rag without a hook to catch gar. It gets hung in there teeth. I always say there won't be any bass around where there are gar. Could just be me but I have never caught any bass where there were a lot of gar surfacing. 👊👍

You're smarter than me! Several years ago I was fishing below a dam like that with only my rod and lure just like you, except I was using a top water Pop R, and I caught the biggest gar I have ever seen. I landed him and my lure was chomped down in those teeth and I thought what the hell am I going to do now. I yelled down at another guy fishing down the way and he came over with a pair of giant channel locks and we got the lure out. I still have the lure to this day! I'm going back to that spot next month, maybe I can catch another one with the same lure :) I wasn't smart enough to just pick a stick up and pry my lure out, though :)

Gar are great fish to catch. Still on my bucket list. No luck yet. Here in southern Ontario Canada there are only a couple spots you can go bank or wade fishing for them.

Man here is a golden rule for u when gar fishing: Always check your line after a bite! More over if u can use a thicker leader that would be the best!
