I would not recommend hitting it with a hammer and then trust that engine over big jumps.

You're right. I was stuck without a suitable tool, and I wanted to move forward with that job. These bearings are very strong and capable to hold light knocks without being destroyed. But it is clear that the best way to do it is with controlled insert device.

@@MyINNOVAMotorcycling the bearings are not the issue, hitting the crankshaft like that knocks it out of true, potentially imploding your engine with an unbalanced crankshaft.. right?

@@socks2441 The "king's" way is to use a tool that pulls the spindle in, and NOT by push it with hammer. But my knocks were controlled and not the kind that could distort the spindle, or the bearing, so there is no "vulnerability" either in balance.

@@MyINNOVAMotorcycling surely unless you wedge something inside the crankshaft you hitting it like that is gauranteed to knock it out of true? the crankshaft is only pressed together, and to knock it into true most workshops would likely do it with gentle knocks of the hammer... i find it hard to believe hitting it like that wouldnt affect its alignment at all. that is a thousand times the lateral force it would ever experience while in normal use inside a running engine, which has it supported on both ends of the shaft and experiences only up and down force and no lateral force. all that being said, i will take your word for it. because if you were wrong you would know as your engine would have blown up, and i assume it hasnt, which means your way worked fine. i personally would never risk doing it that way though, especially on a hot rods/ wiseco crank etc. i wouldnt trust their quality to take that kind of abuse.

@@socks2441 I understand one or two things in engineering, so I understand that my impact did not create a distortion. It's not ideal, but it's KZbin and it's both entertainment, and the sharing thing... that's how I did it and for me it's okay, and KZbin is all about sharing, and I share. And everyone will take from it what is suits for him and on his responsibility. This is how it is on KZbin.

Man, there was never any specialty tool I haven't thought about making for projects. I have a few friends that are master level at saving money by fabricating tools. With little brain storming between us it's unreal how much time we kill not doing the actual project the tool was created to do!

To be able to build a new tool from existing tools for me is both a need and a hobby. I need it for two reasons: one, my toolbox can never hold all the tools I need, unless I work with an unlimited open budget method (and I do not have this privilege). Second, if I get stuck in the middle of a job and find that I am missing a tool, then the effective way to continue the job run is to improvise the necessary tools.

Never hit a crank, you will unbalance and untrue the crankshaft. Never install a crank that way. 😢

Basically you are righ. But there is a difference between theory and practice. In practice, my measured blow did not cause any damage, and allowed me to continue the assembly process without wasting time and money waiting for a special insertion tool. It's called: The art of improvisation. Every mechanic knows what it is about. In the era of KZbin, you see how it's worked in reality. And of course you can sit on the mechanic's head, day and night, and watch him, and check that he does not deviate from the "accepted" methods, etc... If there is a mechanic who agrees to this, you will find that he is four times more expensive than the other good mechanics. Everyone makes their own decisions. There is no good or bad here.

Crank installation and removal tools are basic shop equipment. If you don't have the equipment to do a job like that you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. Just like opinions I'm an asshole ;-) or something like that lol
