Welded crankshafts do last. When heavy trucks are rebuilt, this is sometimes used. It may because it costs much less than a new crankshaft. It may be used because nobody sells new crankshafts. Other times it is because the replacement crankshafts sold are not as good as OEM crankshafts. Since heavy truck downtime is extremely expensive, nobody would use welded cranks if they did not last as long.
